'Alchemy' is the new release from Indian electronic artists Bandish Projekt, based around a collaboration with Uk Spoken word artist Last Mango in Paris.Alchemy is a celebration of modern day India; Narvekar's production combines a traditional Indian aesthetic with an electronic undercurrent and vocals from UK's Hannah Hannah Magenta. The track provides a foundation for a poem which evokes a contemporary subcontinent, where tradition is remixed by a generation hungry for change.

ALCHEMY FEAT LAST MANGO IN PARIS - ALBUM VERSION

When Ricky and renowned American pianist Michael Lewin proposed a musical reinvention of the classic Chopin composition to Wouter, the flutist felt both excitement and trepidation. “This is a perfectly written piece and Michael’s exquisite rendition was already so beautiful that I wondered if we could add anything without spoiling it,” he explains. “So we set about fusing Michael’s work with our own, while still keeping the spirit of the piece intact. A challenging — and satisfying — project!” For Kej, there is something deeply magical about Chopin’s creation, as well as Lewin’s interpretation. “It’s musically chaotic, but every note comes together with so much emotional depth,” he says, “that it’s difficult not to feel a surge of happiness or sadness while listening to it.”

Devotional Salutations to the Divine

Aarti begins at the dhuni, a fireplace worshipped by nagas and avadhootas. It is where the fires of sacrifice consume your ego and anything that you offer to it with surrender and devotion.  The practitioner sees the external fire inside himself and tests everything and everyone with the purity of the fire through his sacrifice to it.

Prayer to the Dhuni:

The prayer of/to the dhuni begins with the sounding of the double-headed damaru (a drum) awakening and bringing all dualities into oneness.  All the syllables of sanskrit have come from this double-headed damaru centrally vibrating with the sound of AUM, the vibration of oneness.  The call of the conch is also the vibration of AUM transformed into the mantra “Dutt Datta Alak” (“we are awakened by the trinity – giver, retainer, dissolver”) inviting the Gods for worship. 

Dhuni Yagya:

The dhuni yagya is performed by first pouring water around the dhuni and base of the trishula (representing the 3 gunas) to purify the space.  Then yagya samagri is offered to the fire, a sacrificial food consisting of various kinds of seeds which make up the five elements.  This food combines with the fire to create the harmony of the surrounding five elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether).

Devotional prayers and mantras are chanted in sanskrit to awaken the chakras and acknowledge the divine in its many forms and as Formless One. 

Please note:  the duni space, fire and ash are sacred: do not point or touch your feet to the duni; do not touch the duni or ash without first having bath; do not throw anything into the duni (including sticks or ash that the fire has thrown out!).

Maha Shivaratri wishes to all. I couldn't have asked for a better day to release "Shivalaya", the new track from Mute Darbaari. I had the privilege of working with Sachin Bagli, the genius producer. The idea behind making a vachana into a song is to spread the beautiful messages that it conveys. It provides a powerful message as to how we must live. Temples definitely serve society culturally and socially, but the inner sanctity of an individual is not enhanced just by building temples and ritualistic worship. One should see God in every object around and strive to reach the God within. Temples are static, but the journey within is infinite. Static can be destroyed, but how can you put an end to "Jangama" (always moving)?
