Disquiet Junto Project 0617: Haunt Scape

trick or  (disquiet0617)

Samuel Beckett’s Ill Seen Ill Said describes the final, solitary days of an elderly woman. Written as a play, the work reads more like a stream-of-consciousness narrative with disassociated visuals symbolizing human frailty. 

Like much of Beckett’s work, not a whole lot happens in terms of action. The main character spends her time watching the evening sky, relating to the stoic loneliness of stones, and recalling fragments of a long life passed.

The opinion here is that truly haunting material succeeds in moments of anticipation. When viewing a horror movie, for example, we’re more anxious of what could happen rather than what eventually does. The following passage from Ill Seen Ill Said describes such a moment:

"All dark in the cabin while she whitens afar. Silence but for the imaginary murmur of flakes beating on the roof. And every now and then a real creak. Her company. Here without having to close the eye sees her afar. Motionless in the snow under the snow. The buttonhook trembles from its nail as if a night like any other. Facing the black curtain the chair exudes its solitude."

For this Junto piece, Suss Müsik used handmade sonic devices to manipulate sounds recorded from room ambience. Taking select attributes to their maximum created surprising effects. The result is a quiet yet creepy atmosphere in which nothing “haunting” actually takes place, allowing the imagination to conjure impending scenes of great disturbance.

The piece is entitled Ill Heard and was recorded live to 8-track.

Don't Go In There [disquiet0617]

In Switzerland, Halloween is not the best studied or understood tradition, so please excuse my submission, if it does not meet expectations. I based the whole thing on a sample folder I found on my drive, downloaded in the late 90s and never used before. Many sounds were too gory for my feeble nerves so I stuck with cats, birds and the like. I then made some scary noises with my guitar and looped them. Now, kids, is that an appropriate soundtrack for a scary short story about collecting sweets?

Disquiet0617 - Sounds Of Horror

A dark ambient track inspired by Halloween, created with Csound. A collage of my musical past, processed in various ways to create a soundscape that is both unsettling and otherworldly. The familiar is twisted and distorted, creating a sense of unease. The result is a track that is both experimental and atmospheric.

Disquiet Junto Project 0617: Haunt Scape
The Assignment: Halloween is coming up. Do your thing.

In the haunting shadows of a disquiet Halloween, I craved a genuine fright, so I summoned an 8-track version of Bitwig with a cruel code from the sinister pages of "ComputerMusic" magazine (August 2023). Since that blood-curdling Superbooth 23 affair, the eerie Cthulhu call of this DAW has haunted my dreams, yet the terrifying thought of the time needed for mastering IT always kept me at bay. Now, having dared to dance with this phantom... it's eerily … but okay. Alas, this 8-track version, drained by nocturnal vampires, has had many of its limbs horrifically amputated. Thus, even armed with my trusty modular hatchet, it's hard to gauge if braving this ghostly realm is worth it. Be that as it may, a few nocturnal samples, mummified synths, and a disemboweled Lyra8 impro might not raise the dead from the graves, but together they gave me some creeps. (A little bit.)
