Oh! Made me cry with these two questions: "What has your winter experience been? What don't you want to lose?" I love winter and especially tracking animals across the landscape who reveal the most intimate details of their lives. Having moved from Maine to DC recently, I can connect easily to the feeling of loss of winter activities. Many Mainer's, myself included were and are aware of the loss of winters past too -- ask those that skate, ski or snowshoe or ice fish, go tracking. Oh and I loved taking wood-fired saunas from which we overheat and run and roll out in the snow. Again, well done with a "home run" couple of questions at the end!

The Canada Geese became day visitors in November. They arrive together each morning, calling aloud and landing in the wetlands in the back (the Dyke Marsh). They swim over into the "canal"  and then walk up onto the grass to feed. At dusk their imminent departure is marked by a couple of them calling. Then they call and fly off together for the night.

Nomming Noises

We're looking for winter, and we need your help. The "Everywhere" Soundwalks are a series of short walking quests to find winter—winter the way it is now, the way it used to be, and the way it might be in the future.

For each short walk you'll be asked to find a certain environment or location: A pond, the woods, a hill or a bench.

These can be experienced all at once, or you can choose which episodes you’d like to listen to. They can all stand on their own as well; think of it sort of like an album. You can even listen out of order.

This walk is meant to be heard at a pond, or a lake, or a skating rink. Go anywhere where there’s some fresh water and a little bit of space to walk. Even a large puddle would work.

Southern Gothic: The Mandolin

At about midnight (under a near full moon), about 100 migrating Tundra Swans flew directly overhead the western part of the Dyke Marsh (on the Potomac River) in Alexandria, VA. In the background you may hear traffic on the George Washington Memorial Parkway and a human appreciator talking to a friend on the phone about the spectacle -- oh well urban/suburban living can make recording a challenge but I also felt that it is part of why this is amazing. Right here in the greater DC metro area we still witness and participate in nature.

I happened to take some photos of Tundra Swans last week on the Potomac -- so included a picture.
