EA Review: Ego Death - Mind Your Head EP (Ft. 3WA) [FA048]

Bringing the Mind Your Head EP to a close is the psychedelic collaboration with 3WA, “Khnum”. Through an imposing intro featuring fierce and threatening pads, the song crescendos to life. Amongst the otherworldly moans and groans that can be heard within the first minute of “Khnum”, extraterrestrial sounding heartbeats become more and more prominent. Acting as a lifeline to reality, the percussion then guides the listener through a shamanic maze of sounds. As though being launched into another dimension from the depths of the Earth, “Khnum” shifts from the darker atmospheres of the lower bass frequencies to a trippy, high pitched wobble. The result is an energetic yet wonky dubstep banger. As the final track on FA048 continues, the mood shifts back towards a more sinister note as each drop turns the level of chaotic psychedelia up a notch. Utilizing experimental sound design and clever arrangements, Ego Death and 3WA channel inspiration from the Egyptian god of creation, Khnum. Akin to an alien abduction or being kidnapped by machine elves, “Khnum” has no reservations about leaving its listeners floating somewhere off in hyperspace.

The continuous activity of Locus Sound has quickly become something to admire. Delivering some of my favourites throughout the year from the likes of Maes and Cartridge, the Bristol based label are already looking to branch out whilst keeping things strictly bass centric. Opening up a new outlet for multi-genre projects, Locus Sound welcome fellow Bristol native Roy Bar to the stacked roster, and it's a perfect fit. 'Icarus' moves through six tracks of addictive and diverse dance floor heaters whilst rolling through an impressive wide range of tempos. Being the 140 obsessive that I am however, it's a pleasure to be premiering the lone Dubstep focused track of the six, 'Growler'.

Reaching the eye of the storm, conscious spoken vocals remind us that we have crossed over back to our dimension and we are slowly realizing that our journey is coming to an end.
