For thousands of years, this sea was a life-giver, bringing food, trade, and civilization. Covering an area the size of Ireland, it was the fourth largest freshwater lake in the world. But then, in the middle of the 20th Century, something happened. An irrigation project went wrong, depriving the sea of vital water. In its place came toxic chemicals, poisons, and shores of unbreathable dust. Today, the sea is so deadly it’s been called the Silent Chernobyl.
We humans have turned an ancient oasis to a modern desert ravaged by cancer-causing storms ...  this is the story of the Aral Sea.
