GAS - NARKOPOP

In the body of work of Wolfgang Voigt – who, like few others, has shaped and influenced the world of electronic music with countless different projects since the early 1990s -, GAS stands out in particular. Even after nearly 20 years, the sound of GAS doesn’t seem to have lost any of its luster, as shown by the commanding success of Kompakt’s fall 2016 re-release of the back catalogue as box set.

The overwhelming feedback from the international fan community and worldwide media outlets attests once again to the timelessness of GAS. Which is why it will feel like hardly a day has passed since the release of the last official album “Pop” nearly 20 years ago, when Wolfgang Voigt resumes this specific path with the upcoming new full-length NARKOPOP (out 21 april).

The first GAS live tour since 8 years will start in early April in Copenhagen followed by selected shows in Germany, Austria, UK, Netherlands, Spain and Italy.

Wolfgang Voigt, born 1961 in Cologne, is an artist, music producer, label manager and co-founder of Kompakt, the internationally renowned, Cologne-based label for techno and electronic music.

Since 1965, Faustino Barrientos has lived alone on the shores lake O'Higgins' in a house built from the remains of a shipwrecked fishing vessel. He's a pastoralist, living mostly off the land and his livestock, with few modern amenities. His nearest neighbors are in Villa O'Higgins, a small community of several hundred people, 25 miles away, accessible only by a two-day horseback ride through rugged mountain animal paths. Every few years, Faustino makes this ride to sell his cattle in town.

Currently 81 years old, Faustino is reaching the end of his life, and his self-imposed isolation is being encroached upon by the forces of government, economy, and tourism. In December 2011, VICE went to document his lifestyle and speak with him about the changing face of Patagonia and the gaucho lifestyle.

Wolfgang Voigt, born in 1961 in Cologne, Germany, is an artist, music producer, label owner and one of the co-founders of the Cologne-based electronica and techno label Kompakt.

Working under many different project names and pseudonyms (e.g. Mike Ink, Studio1, M:I:5, GAS, Love Inc., Freiland, Wassermann…), Wolfgang Voigt has continuously varied his own, unmistakable music style from the onset of the 1990s, spanning the spectrum from creating experimental and unusual hybrids by combining elements of techno with German Schlager and folk music, to pioneering, austere minimalistic concept techno series such as Studio1, a series that was limited to 10 vinyl releases, the cover of each bearing a plain color design without any text.

Dabei gehören eigenwillige Kreuzungen aus Techno und Schlager- oder Volksmusikanleihen, ebenso zu seinem experimentellen Repertoire, wie stilprägende, formstreng minimalistische Konzepttechno Reihen wie Studio1 - eine auf zehn Vinyl Veröffentlichungen beschränkte Serie, deren grafische Covergestaltung sich ganz ohne Text, nur durch Farben unterscheidet.

Afternoon Version is a Georgian alternative band that first emerged in 1993, in the thick of Georgia’s post-Soviet chaos—a time of blackouts, curfews, and creative defiance. Formed by five teenagers from Tbilisi, the band found inspiration in the emotional landscapes of British music from the 90s—artists like Massive Attack, Radiohead, and Depeche Mode—blending that influence with their own raw, electronic-infused sound.

The original lineup included George "Sikha" Sikharulidze (bass, vocals, programming), Zurab "Zuricha" Dzagnidze (guitar), Goga Kavtaradze (drums), Nicka Tsereteli (keyboards, backing vocals), and Dato Toidze (guitar), with Misha Abesadze on vocals in the very early phase. Over the years, the band saw several evolutions, but always kept its introspective core and deep sonic textures intact.

In late 2023, after years of sporadic releases and quiet reverence from a niche audience, the original lineup reformed for a special project focused on re-recording and reimagining their earliest songs. This emotional reunion wasn't just a nostalgia trip—it was a creative renewal that led to a powerful new wave of performances and recordings.

Their music—from early releases like Together to more recent EPs like Unfortunately Dizzy—has always been a mirror to inner lives, national atmosphere, and the surreal melancholy of time passing. Afternoon Version remains a band that doesn’t chase trends—they create sonic spaces where memory, emotion, and experimentation blur into something beautifully timeless.
