Benni - Rain Dance

An interest in ancestral Latin American cosmology has always run right through the music of Ecuadorian music producer Nicola Cruz. His creative process involves an attentive, careful search for the living roots and rituals that are part of South American identity—its Andean and African origins in particular—valuing its rhythms, its oral traditions, its instruments and the energy they transmit. His first record, Prender el Alma (2015) explored the development of the consciousness and spirituality, and how they connect with music. In Siku, his most recent production, Cruz continues this exploration, expanding his vision towards new stories and other cultures as sources of inspiration. A crucial aspect on this journey is his collaboration with other artists from around the world.

The siku is a wind instrument of Andean origin, highly symbolic in ancestral rituals, made up of two separate, complementary parts, the arca and the ira. It is a representation of duality, an essential element of the indigenous world view, associated with involvement and complementarity, far from the binary thinking typical of western societies. That duality is reflected on this record in the coming together of sounds, whether electronic or organic, past or present, local or global. On Siku, Nicola Cruz combines instruments with symbolic, spiritual connotations, such as the sitar, the siku, and the balafon with hints of electronica. Studies of the samba, cumbia and rhythms of African, Andean and Hindu origin are combined with Cruz’s characteristically unpredictable, mystical style.

Following last month's inaugural installment from Desert Trax, the world and electronic music label releases yet another star-studded line-up of producers re-imagining the rich compositions of World Soul artist, Poranguí. 

This latest installment opens with famed English producer, El Búho, whose Latin American folk and cumbia-inspired take on “Danza del Viento” absolutely lifts the Spirit. Both Momentology and DJ Taz Rashid have been on a hot streak, pairing up for a number of releases on Desert Dwellers' label, but this time the pair aim for a Latin-focused, earthy remix of “Canto de la Selva.” Coming off a massive Desert Trax release earlier this summer in Apu, duo Jakare (Italian producers Halfred and Lo.Renzo) bring their South American slow house sound to Poranguí's “Otorongo”. 

Newcomers to the label Ryan Herr, Walkerji, and Baptiste Sejourne are joined by returning favorites Moon Frog, Ancestral Elephants, and Erothyme. Once again one of the label's most prolific artists, Poranguí, has woven together a powerful constellation of talent to interpret these potent medicine songs.

Shika Shika Collective is proud to present “De aquí hasta aquí”, the debut album by percussionist and producer Federico Estévez.

You may know Fede as the drummer and percussionist for Chancha Vía Circuito´s live band, having made a reputation around the world for his rhythmic virtuosity and trademark broken beats.

Following “Hologramas” the captivating opening track on Shika Shika’s “Mare Insularum” compilation, “De aquí hasta aquí” is Fede’s first full-length release. On it he shares with us his complex, poly-rhythmic universe through ten tracks uniting his own South American origins, with African rhythms and featuring collaborations with Rodrigo Gallardo, Pablo Paz, Wen, Manu Quintans, Klik & Frik and Chancha vía Circuito.

or our delight, Indio Blanco presents to us a 6-track EP named "El Caracol y La Luna" that travels by distinct sonorities and moments of his career, highlighting the diversity on references that passed by the artist's fruition during the last decades. Indio Blanco is the new alias given to the multimedia project created by the Dutch pioneer and multifaceted artist Piet Jan Blauw.

Piet Jan started his career by combining and developing distinct techniques through his painting with water, oil-paint, etchings, silkscreens, jewelry ( silver, acrylic and rubber ), brass sculptures, and kinetic objects. He was a member of the artist union "BBK 69" (1970-1989). Also, Piet Jan lectured at the Folk High School in Bergen, the N.S. training school for teachers in Haarlem and the International Make-Up Art School in Cologne – Germany.

For the past five decades, he's been involved in several incredible projects with talents such as the Mexican pre-hispanic masterminds Jorge Reyes, Cheko Mosqueira and Alyosha Barreiro. In the Netherlands, he built partnerships with notorious deejays like DJ Isis and DJ Dimitri Kneppers and collaborations with avant-garde talents from around the globe.

Since the early 70s, Piet Jan Blauw started crafting and performing with interactive kinetic installations which became the foundation of his performances. These installations were quite substantial therefore the artist started to craft smaller sensorial sculptures and use them as instruments. He uses this signature technique until nowadays.

Astoria, Queens resident Adam Partridge, aka Atropolis, goes back to his roots with “From Greece With Love,” the second single from his upcoming album. Incorporating traditional Grecian sounds into the Global Bass / Tropical Dance genre, the track is a bass heavy dancefloor bomb featuring the unique musicianship of Yiannis Mandas, who lends his skills on the Cretan Lyra and vocals. 

Atropolis has spent the past decade teaching music production, releasing music, studying and working with sounds ranging from his own Greek-Cypriot heritage to other diverse musical cultures in Colombia, India, Mexico, Ghana and South Africa. With a degree in music composition and ethnomusicology, Atropolis is Adam’s alter ego that explores international styles of music fused with a diverse range of contemporary electronic genres. Growing up, Adam’s after school jazz program at Queens College greatly influenced his improvisational, compositional, and rhythmic approach to music production. His instructors at Queens College introduced a focused study on Thelonious Monk’s repertoire, which still resonates throughout Adam’s approach to playing his primary instrument, the piano. Parallel to these teenage musical moments, Adam was introduced to composition using Sibelius, and Digital Performer, where Atropolis got his first chops in music production using digital audio workstations.

His upcoming album, “Time of Sine,” is due on Wonderwheel Recordings in July, 2020.
