About Maracuyá: 

Valentine aka Maracuyá is a French globetrotter who lived in Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Vanuatu, Australia and now she's based in Costa Rica. Her eclectic selection is meant to always broaden her own taste and share it with open-minded ears . 

Valentine is also co-founder of the Random Collective, promoting cultural activities in San José, Costa Rica. She will also soon release her first track in the upcoming Casacaos Mux Compilation.

FOLKLORIC ELECTRONICA LIKE YOU’VE NEVER HEARD BEFORE: WAXPLOITATION PRESENTS FUTURE SOUNDS OF ARGENTINA 

A follow-up to Waxploitation’s 2012 genre- defining compilation Future Sounds of Buenos Aires, the label returns to explore a new school of Argentinian electronic music artists creating world-wide, dance floor shattering beats that take as much from the ancestral sounds of the Andean mountains as they do from minimal techno, house, UK grime and bhangra beat.

Future Sounds of Argentina is a 15 track compilation featuring musicians unafraid to create music that mixes folk with hip hop, Brazilian pop with the twang of the charango, or even Hindu instrumentation with traditional cumbia percussion. With nuance, soul and heart, these artists re-interpret digital folklorica to match their constant flux and unparalleled hunger to bridge the dated divides between North and South, city and country, folklore and pop –creating music that’s fresh, current and deeply ingenious. 

Klik & Frik, the new project from digital cumbia heavyweights, Frikstailers, lead the way into the exciting evolution of Argentinian electronic music, featuring a mixture of minimal techno, psychedelia and Amazonian birdsong that promises to put the listener in a trance-like state.

Following their footsteps are other digital folklorica veterans like Lagartijeando (a/k/a Mati Zundel), Barrio Lindo and Camanchaca, who leave behind the frenetic nature of their earlier tracks, representing the transformation of the Buenos Aires electronic music scene –from producing straight up party bangers to creating timeless, omnivore beats that incorporate everything from charango guitar and accordion loops, quena, cumbia beats and thumping bass.

Representing a different side of Argentinian electronic music is the MC Macha Kiddo, who shows off her combative, UK grime inspired beats and urgent bars. A Costa Rican transplant, she came to Argentina in search of new sounds, getting inspired by Buenos Aires’ vibrant female MC scene.

FSOA also features tracks from newcomers Kaleema, Galgo & Kiki, Federico Estevez, Rumbo Tumba, and scene veterans Jin Yerei, Wenceslada, Sara Hebe, SidiRum, Barda, Madre Chicha, and Panchasila. This is the second installment of the series, that began with 2012’s Future Sounds of Buenos Aires, and included influential acts like Chancha Via Circuito, La Yegros and King Coya. FSOA is representative of Waxploitation’s commitment to helping discover and nurturing new talent, fostering collaboration and bringing to light extraordinary ideas in contemporary music.

Gitkin’s music exists somewhere between primal, rootsy memory and distant exotic yearning — A dusty bordertown where the familiar blends imperceptibly into the enchantingly foreign. 

After a long and fruitful run as a bandleader with relentlessly touring party-rockers Pimps Of Joytime and a Grammy-nominated country blues collaboration with Cedric Burnside, multi-instrumentalist Brian J set out to “explore tonalities I’d never messed with,” as he puts it. It was a release from “having to write lyrics or involve my voice,” he notes, and so the (mostly) instrumental sound of Gitkin came into being. 

Reviews of Gitkin’s first LP grappled with descriptors, tagging it vaguely as “cinematic” and comparing it favorably with Khruangbin. True, the music is largely wordless, emotionally evocative, and guitar driven. But it possesses an alluring alchemy all its own. 

Gitkin’s first release, 2018’s well-received Five Star Motel, amply demonstrated his ease with earthy funk and comfortably-cut rhythm. On his new full-length release Safe Passage, the itinerant guitar slinger broadens his already rich palette with melodies informed by Greek and Middle Eastern modalities, Peruvian Chicha and Tuareg Saharan guitar styles. No gimmick, this juxtaposition of gut-bucket blues and funk low-end with unexpectedly twisting lead phrases highlights the intense flavors found in each savory ingredient. 

Recorded at his home studio in New Orleans, Safe Passage showcases a new batch of immediately engaging, repeatedly satisfying cuts, ranging from surf exotica (“Cat Nip”) to raunchy roadhouse stompers (“Fools Gold” and “The Drive”) to dreamy vocal cuts “Foot Steps” and “Hold On” to the floating finale of “Safe Passage.” 

Gitkin’s production radiates character and warmth, leaning on soft-focus vintage mics, dubby spring reverbs and the quirks of an analog tape machine. Further enhancing the intimate vibe are distinguished guests like Carol C (of Si*Sé), who lends her striking voice to three tracks, including the strutting single “De La,” veteran Chauncey Yearwood (congas) and New Orleans local Clifton “Spug” Smith, who provides a sousaphone low-end on the cumbia-not-cumbia “Spug Life.” 

Safe Passage will be released by Wonderwheel on September 18th, 2020 and will be available on vinyl, CD and digitally.
