Is that Riders on the Storm? No, it's Leif Erikson opening this week's list, followed by Mirande Lee Richards rocking a psych electronic groove, before thing go really crazy with Cowgirl Clue. The Four Tet tune is a banger (albeit taken from a radio show), and The Spy from Cairo has a great Arabian trance feel to it. Then the keyboards take over as we head to the close with a live piece from Ed Hayden. I do like the Four Tet tune, but The Spy From Cairo just gets the nod for this week's best track.

After releasing the World re-known "Arabadub" album in 2013, The Spy from Cairo returns with a deeper & more cosmic dance-floor sound. Coming back from numerous travels abroad with bigger club & festival performances, he switched from the traditional Oud to an electric Oud, which made things much easier traveling & live. The first two songs we get to hear from his forthcoming album in Autumn 2017 are here. "Sirens of the Nile" is a late night 110 BPM driving four to the floor groove mixed with live Oud, violin/ orchestra lines & echoing vocals. "Open Sesame" features the Oud over hypnotic electronic sounds & a crisp 90+ bpm boom bap beat. The cover was a photo taken from a previous tour in Egypt mixed with a photo of the burnt ambers of a late night festival around a fire.

Gnawa music is a rich repertoire of ancient African Islamic spiritual religious songs and rhythms. Its well preserved heritage combines ritual poetry with traditional music and dancing. The music is performed at 'Lila's', entire communal nights of celebration, dedicated to prayer and healing, guided by the Gnawa Maalem and his group of musicians and dancers. Though many of the influences that formed this music can be traced to sub-Saharan West-Africa, its traditional practice is concentrated in Morocco and the Béchar Province in South-western Algeria. Three producers and studios.

One kooky cameo from a friend.

It's a mixed bag, that comes together as one, with producers hand-picked for their own flair and approach to add more magic to the songs.

'Babylon' was produced by Dave Harper at The Vault Studio on the Sunshine Coast. The first foray into the studio for the then four-piece, resulting in an impressive debut single. A song with a slightly darker, rock-edge, but allowing the skanking guitars and rapid-fire vocals to bust through.

'Impolite' - a crowd favourite - was chosen, and Bearfoot had one producer in mind that could make this track a complete banger; Paulie B at Tanuki Lounge. Locking themselves into the West End Studio for a few days, the band re-emerged, tired yet triumphant. 'Impolite' hit hard with massive hooks, bubbling keys, and a bouncing rhythm section. 

When it came to choosing a track as a nod to the Vibe Tribe, it was obvious. The sun-soaked cheerful tune, 'One Drop' HAD to be recorded, and it was long-time friend Brian Goodworth at Big Rock Studio that was perfect for it. Simple, poppy, and a perfect contrast to the darker roots tones of 'Babylon' and 'Impolite'.  They stripped back the production, but left some nice touches (including a sneaky guitar solo from the B-Man himself).

Two of the new recruits to the Bearfoot arsenal, 'Could Be Worse', and 'Dreamer' (which was a reworking of an older Bearfoot track) were roadtested at Woodford, given the nod, and taken proudly to Paulie B at Tanuki Lounge again. These two tracks are the yin yang of the EP - one light, one dark, but working together to deliver similar messages and complementing each other. Huge bass alert! 

And one can't ignore the awesome Mr Boogie's cameo, recorded on Voicemail.

While Paulie B mastered his productions as well ('Impolite', 'Could Be Worse' and 'Dreamer'), Bearfoot chose Paul Blakey at 12th & Vine in Broadbeach to master the other tracks, having them blend nicely together.

Kabanjak has been exploring genres of all sorts of design that pull from hip-hop, electronica, reggae and soul to create some of the most forward-thinking music to come out of Europe. Stepping out this time as a one-man band, the musician has orchestrated a new work which employs all of his talents as a producer of up-to-the-minute sounds.  
 
Kabanjak’s latest solo venture, Dubs and Downs, strips his collective influences down to the lone elements of reggae and dub. Largely instrumental, the EP opts for tempos that are never disturbed beyond the fuss of a soft, tropical breeze. Dubs and Downs evokes the gritty living of coastal life and takes its cues from reggae’s most diverse spectrum; everyone from Lee “Scratch” Perry and King Tubby to Augusto Pablo and Sugar Minott can be referenced.  
 
With only a spare seven tracks, Kabanjak manages some truly sultry gems. “Home Again” (featuring Til Schneider), an undulating groove of equatorial heat, is accented with horns that are drawn across the number with painterly, breezy streaks. “Everything is Alright”, which features on the EP in three different versions (each one a slight variation in groove and melody), adds chunk and heft to its rhythm, the hollows of its groove filling up with the resonance of deep bass. 
 
Keeping the corners of these structured rhythms stone-tight, Kabanjak allows ample room for a flush of blue melody to expand within the perimeters. Some of reggae’s most pronounced elements are found here (prominent use of the melodica features throughout) and Dubs and Downs employs a judicious mix of one-drop and steppers, styles given fresh designs through the producer’s impressive arrangements. 
 

 
 
On the EP’s most strident cut, “Boomdraw”, guest Amlak Redsqaure offers a honeyed toasting that slightly roughens the otherwise smooth flow of this organic Reggae. The same number appears yet again as an instrumental to allow a closer listen at all the smaller nuances that go unnoticed behind Redsqaure’s cavernous vocal. 
 
It is perhaps opening number “More Love” which sums up this experience of unperturbed, island living, the untouchable calm in both the waves of the sea and sand. Echoing with the colours of twilight, the number perfectly sets the bar high for club-driven reggae, and is delivered by a well-known name in underground music culture.

Leif Erikson is a London-based five-piece that pair the hypnotic pop of Jeff Buckley and Fleetwood Mac with the salt-of-the-earth songwriting of Bob Seger and John Mellencamp. Taking inspiration from the English countryside, the childhood friends have carved out a sound that's as immersive and serene as their muse. The shared affinity for classic rock with contemporaries like War On Drugs and Kurt Vile shine through on tracks like "Get Free" and "Looking For Signs". It has been an amazing ride for the London based duo Rhemi (Ziggy Funk & Neil Pierce) since their formation in 2013. The two have gone from strength to strength, building their name with a signature sound of broad and melodic bass lines, soaring vocals and lush keyboard skills. Not afraid to push the boat out and deliver something new, the high quality of their music has always been a priority for the pair.

The chart-topping list of original hits which includes ‘Warning’ featuring Lynn Lockamy to ‘Diamond’ with HanLei shows how main-room soulful house can stand tall amongst the array of other House sub-genres and is well deserved to headline any vibrant party going. If the soulful side isn’t your thing the boys have certainly got you covered with their ‘Dub’ mixes. The late night stompers of rough drums and raw rhythms keep the vibe going for the people that never want the party to stop. Outernational bass music nomad Filastine ups the ante with £00T. Fractured post-dubstep beat innovations support delicate string arrangements. Overdriven bass synths battle pentatonic gong patterns. Listen closely and listen loud.
Looting from the coffers of hip-hop, moombahton, dubstep and cumbia, Filastine keeps the bass pressure pumping and drums up front. But any similarity to club music genres ends quickly. While a growing tropical bass movement hypes a pan-global dance party, Filastine blazes a different path. Intricate polyrhythms, muted balkan trumpets, ephem- eral soundscapes, and unique vocal contributions push this album off the known map into uncharted musical territory.
Introduction No Step will test your speakers for the album that follows. Gendjer2 and Colony Collapse are the fruit of a tight collaboration with Indonesian indy rapper Nova. She contributes lush 60’s R&B harmonies and megaphone-filtered rhymes. Filastine’s time in Asia also brings a featuring from Japan’s chief rap dadaist ECD. In Lost Report hear him shouting against nuclear contamination over a dirty bass hook and the stuttered clicks of a geiger counter. These onsite collaborations were recorded everywhere from ware- houses to rainforests, then painstakingly mixed over the course of 2011 in a rooftop studio in the muslim quarter of Barcelona, with breaks to participate in the Spanish uprisings of last year.
Throughout the album Filastine leverages rhythmic expertise that he’s gathered far and wide, from the tiny Moroccan village of Jajouka to the coke-fueled parades of Rio de Janeiro. Echoes of Filastine’s old marching band, the Infernal Noise Brigade, propel the drum corp juke of Circulate False Notes and the glitch-crunk of Skirmish. Even Filastine’s years as a taxi driver are audible in the field recordings of radio static, street noises and polyglot collages.
£00T comes with a grip of videos and graphics that riff on concepts from the Arab spring to ecological and financial collapse. With a CD design doubling as utopian money, the album launches alongside a currency for a near-future network of clandestine floating cities.
