The project itself is a collaboration between two friends from different horizons but with a same vision.  We’ve been playing together in many different cities around the world and we have a lot of friends in common all over the planet, it was just a matter of time before we’d put out something together, just because we thought it would be fun to do.  Our mix contains unexpected music, rare grooves and unreleased material…and we hope you’ll appreciate the effort and the music we put into this mix. As one the most important tastemakers Europe has to offer, and af- filiated with labels Brownswood, Blue Note, !K7 Records, Stones Throw and Jazzy Sport, this bearded early riser is consistently a couple steps ahead of your average early adopter. He doesn’t wait for the next thing to land on his lap, actively seeking it out - just take a peek at his playl- ists on Belgium’s foremost national radio station Studio Brussel which received compliments from Rough Trade Shops and Gilles Peterson.

One of the original turntablists, J. Rocc founded the Beat Junkies in 1992 with Melo-D and Rhettmatic, but has done just as much on his own as in a group setting. He began DJing in the mid-’80s with a California group named PSK. Soon after forming, the Beat Junkies became a seminal force in the rise of instrumental hip-hop, including core member Babu plus future stars Shortkut and D-Styles. In addition to numerous mix- tapes and his own production for Stones Throw releases, J. Rocc has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows since the early 2000’s, was the 3rd member of Jaylib (Madlib & J Dilla) during the group’s live events, and collaborated with Madlib on Beat Konducta Vol. 5-6: A Tribute to J Dilla.

2016 was a year to be remembered.. 

Our hearts and souls were constantly being tested by the world. Hate and mistreatment of others wasn’t just part of our everyday conscious but normalized, propped up, and in the case of this country given office. 

For many (myself included), music is our release, escape, and medicine. We look to artists and musicians for solace in these difficult times, yet somehow 2016 wouldn’t even allow for that. Maybe it’s just the internet and the access to information we have now but I can’t remember another year in my life where so so many of our artistic and musical vanguard left us. From lesser known session players to the all mighty superstars, the world felt a little more lonely.

I decided to create this mixtape to commemorate and celebrate this long list of artists. Though I did extensive research and attempted to be as thorough as possible there was no way I could respectfully pay tribute to all and make this an enjoyable mixtape that wouldn’t be 5 hours long. My apologies in advance to Sir George Martin, Juan Gabriel, Leonard Cohen and many others (I still don’t understand how there’s only one EW&F song on here). In their place I included a few of the lesser known but still impactful losses such as Big Kap, DTTX, and Mic Gillette. Most of these songs have close personal connection to me whether as a song I learned about on my journey as a DJ, a song I’d jam to with my Mom or Aunt, a sample I rapped on, music I cruised and/or smoked to, or a late night dedication to a young crush.

As we finish our first month of 2017 with no signs of respite in sight I’ve thought a lot about spirit. The spirit of the people and the spirit of these beautiful artists. Though they have left the physical plain their spirit and soul is still very much here living on in their music and living through us. Creating this mix reminded me of that and I’m extremely grateful for it. May it serve as an example of hope and love as we continue on and la lucha sigue. 

We’re here and we’re not going anywhere…

Coming straight from Los Angeles, Dam Funk is known as the "Boogie Funk Ambassador", an artist who has been working since the mid 80's as a mult-instrumentalist, DJ, record collector, producer and vocalist; this guy is a renaissance man of all things funk. In the last couple years he has been getting an avalanche of press over his modern funk productions with a sound that brims with vintage synthesizers, stuttering handclaps, and low slung grooves that conjures late night drives through the Los Angeles metropolis. Working in the tradition of Slave, early Prince, Prelude Records and ZAPP, here is a sound that is spiritual and robotic, iconoclastic yet still rooted in the tradition of his elders.

It is a great honor we present to you the Dam-Funk "Funk's Revenge" Mix CD and T-shirt. This special collaboration includes a mix cd by Dam Funk himself and t-shirt design inspired by one of Dam Funk's favorite album covers.

Best known as one-half of soul duo Myron & E, Newark native Eric ‘E’ Cooke aka Eric Boss or E Da Boss is the definition of a multifaceted artist. It began with DJing and a love of hip-hop, which eventually turned into producing, and ultimately brought him to singing and songwriting.

Eric got his first taste of music by playing records during family card games and fish frys. As a teen, he began collecting records of his own and DJing, hanging out at the Music Factory and Rock and Soul in New York City. After relocating to southwest Virginia, he graduated high school and began spinning at parties, which allowed him to invest in an Ensoniq ASR-10 keyboard, two Technics turntables and an eight-track recorder. He later moved to San Francisco where he met Myron Glasper while on the road with the Bay Area’s Blackalicious, and shortly after Eric released an independent record as a producer under the name E da Boss.

While touring in Finland for his solo project, Eric connected with producer Didier Selin of The Soul Investigators, whose work with singer Nicole Willis helped define them as one of Europe’s foremost retro-soul bands. Back in the U.S., Eric recruited Myron as a singing and songwriting partner, and with the production of Didier behind them Myron& E was born. Together they released a string of successful 45 singles on The Investigators‘ label Timmion Records, went on to release their debut album “Broadway” on renowned label Stones Throw in 2013, collaborated on a 45 with Russian funk band The Soul Surfers on Ubiquity Records, and toured the world.

In the meantime Eric continued to spread the jam of his talent far and wide; he contributed vocals to a track for UK sensation The Gene Dudley Group‘s sophomore album on Wah Wah 45s, released material under the bandname Lucid Paradise alongside Ishtar , founded and is one half of electro-boogie duo The Pendletons, duetted with Gizelle Smith on two tracks from her solo album “Ruthless Day” on Jalapeno and, more recently, began a prolific collaboration with Bjoern Wagner and Steffen Wagner (The Mighty Mocambos / Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band).

Pre "J.T" 70s Kool & The Gang is one of the seminal funk outfits that would later inspire a generation of hip hop producers and musicians.  As a tribute to co-founder Ronald Bell who recently passed, Raj Mahal spins some of his favorite classic and obscure funky Kool joints with a few covers thrown in for good measure.
