Divide And Rule (Cus Cus Riddim)

'War Dance' on Stephen Marley's Bongo Nya riddim begins with a sample of the legendary Indo-Jamaican artist Super Cat. Cat, in a conversation with Chin, gives a mystical history of how drum beats played by slaves and native Indians metaphorphed over the years into dancehall and studio riddims. Cat in his speech conflates East Indians and First Nation Indians of the Americas. The Bongo Nya riddim kicks in and provides the perfect bass for Delhi Sultanate's lyrics evoking images of a post apocalyptic Indigenous people's war dance.

War Dance (Bongo Nya)

‘Lighters Up’ is a re-lick of Major Lazer’s tune for Snoop Lion, by London based producer Tramendas. Begum X sings harmonies on the Chorus ‘today not tomorrow’ while Delhi Sultanate’s verses contain multiple references to colonial history, from the 1857 uprising in India to the killing of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011. The Gaddafi reference echoes a classic Dancehall song by Indo-Jamaican artist Super Cat released in 1984. For these lines Delhi Sultanate borrows Cat's pattern of the 1984 classic ‘Under Pressure’ where Cat pays homage to the Libyan leader and proponent of pan Africanism.

Today not Tomorrow (Lighters Up)

'No capitalists shall escape' opens with a sample from Chronixx, prophesizing that in the near future all youths will grow up as revolutionaries. Stephen Marley's rockstone beat kicks in over analogue dub siren sounds and we hear the sampled voice of Johnny Clarke 'No Capitalists Shall Escape in this time'. Reminding listeners of the original source of Stephen Marley's riddim. The Johnny Clarke line is taken from a dubplate he voiced for Bass Foundation Roots. Interestingly, while the original lyrics to his famous song ' None Shall Escape' do not mention the word 'capitalists' anywhere, a lesser known dub version by King Tubby exists that contains different lyrics. Clarks voice comes in only briefly in the militant dub mix of this track, yet his words are straight to the point. Instead of his usual 'none shall escape' you can clearly hear him say ' No Capitalists Shall Escape' - pointing to the existence of alternate vocal takes of this great roots classic.

As the beat kicks in Delhi Sultanate begins his verse, riddled with references to colonial history and metaphors of disease ala 'small pox blankets' and dubplate boxes full of 'black bacteria'. Johnny Clarke's voice returns once more in the break down before Begum X takes over the rest of the song with her heavy blues style delivery written by her after she spent an afternoon reading Frantz Fanon's 'Wretched of the Earth'

News clips and a soundbite from Orissa’s Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik introduce the themes of violent struggles plagueing such large swathes of India, contemplated by Delhi Sultanate's fiery and indignant lyrics. Chris McGuinness' deep and innovative riddim samples Bhanwre Ne Khilaya Phool, from the 1982 Raj Kapoor film Prem Rog, infusing the tune with a menacing and tense atmosphere.

DUB IS MY DRUGS PART II

‘Bon Dem Again’ employs Damien Marley’s ‘As We Enter’ riddim. Of all the songs on the EP ‘Bon Dem Again' contains the clearest musical connection to Africa. Damien Marley rebuilt a song originally created by Ethiopian jazz legend Mulatu Astatke, titled Yègellé Tezeta. ‘Bon Dem Again’ was first created as a dubplate for London based producer Jstar, the lyrics are a mix of sound clash bravado and revolutionary references. As We Enter (Bon Dem Again)

We’re proud to announce that Dubmission starts a new monthly show this week. Alongside an hour-long mix by Mike from Pitch Black will be another hour from a different label artist every session. For the first show, South Korean, cunningly named mcthfg has stepped up to the plate with a 60 mins journey into beats and bass.

Changwon based artist mcthfg, AKA Christopher Wing, has created noteworthy ambient & dub work for Dubmission Records (UK), Substream (Sweden), and Mindspring Music (USA). In his spare time his Rami Brewing Company makes some of the best beer in South Korea.

Pitch Black are Michael Hodgson and Paddy Free. Having pumped their way through New Zealand’s electronic music scene since their inaugural performance at The Gathering New Year’s Eve festival in 1996, they have spent the subsequent years rousing dance floor punters, generating rave reviews, winning awards and gaining thousands of fans across the world for their dub drenched electronica.
Hard to box into a single audio ‘genre’, Pitch Black is a combination of musical journeys. Their sound is distinctive; ranging from organic ambient beginnings and layered soundscapes to skanking keyboards, cutting acid riffs and thumping rhythmic grooves, with dub being the glue that holds their sound together. One critic has described them as like “Orbital meets King Tubby, or Rhythm and Sound in Technicolor”.

It is their live show that really makes Pitch Black stand out from the rest of the crowd, both sonically and visually. Their tracks take on an added dynamism and their performances reveal the dialectic behind the band – Paddy wants to do it for the crowd, Michael wants to do it to the crowd. Visually they are in another dimension thanks to Michael’s cutting edge visuals.

They have toured the world relentlessly, playing everywhere from Amsterdam to Zagreb and the streets of Las Vegas to the Australian outback, supporting acts such as Coldcut, Skream, Easy Dub All Stars and System 7 along the way.

Dubmission Records have blazed a trail of warped woofers since the mid 90’s, when they launched with a trio of bass heavy dubwise compilations.

MCTHFG | Guest mix for Dubmission Records Series w/ MIKE @ PITCH BLACK | 25/03/2020

Word Sound Power, formed in 2010, is a New Delhi based collective that constructs multimedia collaborations with South Asian artists on issues of social justice. Armed with a mobile studio, electronic music producer Chris McGuinness and dancehall artist Delhi Sultanate travel across South Asia, recording sounds and songs of resistance and creating new music with revolutionary musicians. The process is filmed by Kush Badhwar. Each project culminates in a musical album and documentary. The media is freely distributed, exhibited, and remixed by a global network of artists. 

Word Sound Power has created three projects to date: WSP1 The Bant Singh Project (Punjab, India, 2010), WSP2 Blood Earth (Odisha, India, 2011), and WSP3 Gaddar (Telangana, India, 2012).
