Most of the music for the concept album was composed in the spring and early summer of 1983.
The lyrics for the concept album songs came later.
Some of the lyrics were written in the summer of '83 and more in the following months and years.
The concept album was loosely based on the computer game Wizardry, by Andrew Greenberg and Robert Woodhead.
The software title was a huge and groundbreaking success on the Apple II in 1982.
The date of this song is an anomaly and suggests either a re-write or an estimation of when the original version was composed.
There is a note on the lyrics sheet that says 'Vostok's Song' - presumably one of the characters in the story.

Fun Facts:
Run was composed in July 1987 at 19 Haldon Road, Exeter.
This was during the days of Rough Terrain.
It was also around the same time that Lizzy and Dave moved into the flat on the top floor.
After that, the whole house became like a real life version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Run was the fourth and last song on this cassette when Pete helped George move house from Plymouth back to Exeter.
During the journey, the cassette was played in the van.
Run was the only one of the four songs that Pete liked.
George can no longer recollect who had cheesed him off enough to write this song about them.
The vocal is bizarrely a bit munchkinised.
George must have slowed the tape down to record the vocal part.
Perhaps he couldn't quite hit or hold one of the higher notes.

Fun Facts:
I Pass You By was composed in July 1987 at 19 Haldon Road, Exeter.
It was inspired by the beautiful train journey from Exeter to Torquay.
This journey was George's occasional commute during that summer.
The sound of the train at the start was recorded one evening using two mics and an open window at 63 King Street, Exeter.
That particular property was very close to the main London to Penzance railway line.
It was probably the sound of a British Snail, er, Rail, Intercity 125.
Programming the Boss DR 220A drum machine probably took a long time.
I Pass You By was never included in the set of any band.

We cannot find any paperwork or lyrics for Ocean And.
George believes it was composed in late June or early July 1987.
It was composed on the bass with a delay pedal, rather than on guitar like nearly all of George's other songs.
Ocean And was written at 19 Haldon Road, Exeter.
This was during the days of Rough Terrain.
It was also around the same time that Lizzy and Dave moved into the flat on the top floor.
After that, the whole house became like a real life version of the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Ocean And was briefly considered for addition to the Rough Terrain repertoire, but never was.

Fun Facts:
The first ten seconds or so of this are a bit garbled due to cassette deterioration over several decades.
Secret Subsociety may have the longest set of lyrics of all of George's songs.
It expresses a lot of experiences around the themes of claustrophobia, fear and paranoia.
George is no longer sure about how it was produced exactly.
The reverb that rather dominates the mix may have belonged to Watershed, or Zaphod, or Paul, who produced the Rough Terrain demos.
George remembers playing this, and the next three songs on this tape, to Pete inn his van in 1991.
This was the occasion when Pete collected George from Plymouth to move him and his belongings back to Exeter.
Pete didn't like the first three songs, including this one.
The opening lyrics describe George's writer's block, which then became unblocked as the song unfolded.
There was a pre-bounce mix of this which featured the bass and two guitars.
Sadly this mix has not survived the passage of time and is beyond repair.
As such, the way the song ended up being mixed was quite odd due to the number of tracks needed for all of the parts.
This is quite an ambitious recording, especially for just four tracks on a cassette.
It uses the newer Boss DR 220A drum machine, which actually ran out of memory.
The drums at the end had to be overdubbed once the first 256 bars had been recorded.

This coda was something we discovered at the end of the mix of Leaving Home.
It appears to be just some guitar noodling that happened once the take was finished and the tape was still running.
There's a certain poignancy to it, like a final farewell, so we included it here.

Fun Facts:
Frustration Song was composed at 19 Haldon Road, Exeter.
George wrote it after a period of frustration.
He had been in a relationship with a girlfriend who liked him to do absolutely nothing for long periods of time.
As a person who was always active, he found this very difficult.
It is written on the lyric sheet "A song for" and then the name of the girlfriend.
This was the most reggae song he had ever written up to this point.
The bassline was the creation of Jerry from Rough Terrain.
One of the voices was recorded with the tape slowed down to give the voice a different sound.
The distorted lead guitar is plugged directly into the portastudio. rather than using a mic and a guitar amplifier, to give it that distinct tone.

Fun Facts:
* Oily Road Hideaway is in the key of G minor and the tempo is 85 BPM.
* It was composed at around eleven o’clock on a Friday morning in October 2000.
* Instead of being at home composing a tune, George should have been in Luxembourg to celebrate Floyd and Kat’s wedding.
* Unfortunately, Joe’s old Ford Sierra wasn’t up to the task of completing the journey.
* At around 3am, the old Ford emptied the contents of its sump all over the A303, about two miles from Stonehenge.
* The stricken Sierra was towed right back to Exeter and its sleepy occupants returned to their homes, disappointed.
* Within 15 minutes of returning home, George had composed this piece on a Hokada classical guitar.
* Nearly all the other pieces on the album At Least 1000 Words had their drums recorded at Tim’s house in North Devon, in a room about the size of a toilet.
* The mics were all pretty horrid too, and the whole system looked like it had been built by Captain Hook at a Heath Robinson school for elementary electronics.
* Oily Road Hideaway is the only track on the album that uses programmed drums.
* The rhythm breakdown in the middle of the piece was somewhat longer originally, and cut down quite drastically to save precious space on the CD.
* The Hokada classical guitar, on which the piece was written, plays two parts panned to the left.
* One is the main rhythm part, and the other a melodic motif, which only uses the two top strings.
* The nature of the part means that if one should find oneself at a party where there is a wreck of a two-string guitar, it is still possible to play Oily Road Hideaway!
* The other lead guitar part is played on the Yamaha steel string, which is panned to the right and plays unison with the bass to begin.
* Oily Road Hideaway features a delicate, wistful ostinato played on the string fish, an extraordinary instrument built by Martin from Pyg.
* It starts at 2:05 and continues to the drum break, then reappears at 2:54 and plays until the end.
* A string fish is a like a pair of dulcimers or zithers, joined together at an acute angle.
* The strings are vertical and to play a scale, the player must alternate between the left and right side, like a kalimba.
* Dave and George both play a unison bassline, on the Fender and the Plank respectively.
* George and the Plank are panned right, Dave and the Fender panned left.
* Just after the drum break, at 2:48, George plays two notes that Dave doesn’t play.
* Other than that, their parts are beautifully in sync.
* Flicker would have liked very much to have found a brass section for Oily Road Hideaway, but none was available.

* Lucky Stone is an intriguing track, with all its different styles and sound effects.
* Its moods encompass jazz, rock, reggae, funk and sea shanty.
* Lucky Stone describes a day at the seaside when George took his young son and new girlfriend to Sidmouth.
* There was a sudden thunderstorm and everyone was soaked.
* The sound of the thunder and the playing children represent those memories.
* The new girlfriend gave George a stone from the beach that day.
* It was a talisman for the duration of their relationship and lived in the dashboard of George’s car.
* Lucky Stone also describes a fortunate and unexpected encounter with a trader on the same day, who had an excess of goods he could impart.
* Lucky Stone started coming together the day Dave and George first played with Adi on drums in Bandspace in October 2000.
* Flicker were also auditioning a possible singer called Vince, and his mate came too.
* They were both sailors in the Royal Navy, on leave.

* George had made friends with a Hungarian man called Floyd who showed him a new chord from a Portuguese sea shanty.
* The mystery chord is Bm11b5.
* It is played by holding the A and G strings on the second fret with the first and second fingers, and the D and B strings on the third fret using the third and fourth fingers, with the hi-E open and the lo-E muted.
* The other two chords in the song were A minor and E.
* When George was headhunted by the MD of the company Floyd worked for, Floyd gave him a copy of Mario Puzzo’s book The Godfather, and wrote ‘Welcome to the family!’ inside the front cover.
* Obviously this piece could have no other name.
* Welcome to the Family is in the key of A minor.
* The tempo for this tune is 98.0035 BPM.
* Emma recorded an extra part on the keys that was not used in the end.
* The Stratocaster enters to play rhythm on the second verse.
* The Ice Maiden takes the twin lead parts at the end.

* After dark, when the moon is low in the sky, it makes a beautiful shiny road to itself all the way along the top of the sea.
* The moon always looks so beautiful on the sea at Sidmouth, where Flicker and their friends used to go.
* Sidmouth is bang in the centre of Lyme Bay, and the sea looks so big.
* The moonpath there was even better before all the breakwaters were built.
* The guitar parts for Moonpath were all played using the Ice Maiden, which is double tracked left and right.
* The rhythm guitar was the origin of the track and carries the melody as well.
* The tempo is 138 BPM and the key is C# minor.

Grin was never performed live and never had a full set of lyrics written for it. It was going to be a song about smiling at strangers in the street. The piece developed from a rather unusual one-finger chord that appears after the Dm in 5th position. An updated version of Grin is slated for recording by Flicker.

These recordings of  instrumentals – or Ugstrumentals – by The Ug Brothers were made at Graham’s flat in Fore Street, Exeter, above the Real McCoy Arcade during the late winter of 1994/5. They are most of the set of The Ug Brothers, including various pieces that were never performed live due to having had no lyrics written for them.

There are no vocals as Natalie was not there on the occasions that these Ugstrumentals were recorded. The idea was to have something to listen to and work on with a view to creating lyrics, and also as a karaoke tape for Natalie to sing along to when practising. Few further lyrics were forthcoming as things turned out. These Ugstrumental pieces still sound wonderful and full of interesting musical ideas. The concept of Ugstrumental pieces such as these was later developed by the Flicker project.

The Furniture (part 1: overture) by The Bastard Sons of Dennis, from their album Cherry Smoke Empire.

The Furniture (Los Muebles) is a traditional northern Spanish sea shanty from the Asturias region.

It tells a tale of how a dysfunctional family of linguistically challenged fishermen lost and then found some furniture following a flood, and the consequences.

Linguistically challenged means, in this case, they were not terribly bright and could not even speak their own language very well.

The Spanish version has been loosely translated into English by The Bastard Sons of Dennis.

From an idea by Daniel Richardson.

This song and its anomalies of translation make a great teaching aid, if one happens to have students learning English or Spanish.

* What do we stand for as a label?

We support all independent musicians who are doing something we find interesting. Our team members all have formal music education qualifications.

We are against corporate brainwash muzak, their puppet friends in the mass media, and many other corporate activities. We will fight their desecration of music until either it stops or we die. 

We believe in helping others in the face of corrupt laws and a broken system. We are pro democracy, green energy and free speech.

We're politically liberal. We cannot support the republicans, maga or gun violence in the usa. We don't see there's any real difference, other than in name, between the christian far right in the USA and the taliban in Afghanistan.

In the uk we are broadly pro LibDem/Green/Labour/SNP. We are VERY anti-tory, bnp, ukip, and any of their friends and associates. We have no trust at all in the uk right wing press monopoly and the bbc. Beware the bbc and its claims of neutrality. It is the propaganda mouthpiece of the tory party. It even charges a propaganda tax called the licence fee. But we like Test Match Special and Radio 6, so does that make us hypocrites...? Hmm.

We support independence for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Cornwall. We support the individual and the underdog. We are anti-putin and his war, and pro-Ukraine.
