Fusing New York streetwise sentiments with the rhythm and soul of the Mile High City, Rasp-5 and parkbreezy blend their vocal and instrumental skill sets into the turnkey record Transmitting To Space. Lyrical hip-hop and raw electronic production have a key-turn relationship; The voice is the driving force atop the bedrock that is the track, and there’s virtually no limit to ways in which this relationship can and has been exploited with powerful effect. The UK progeny Reso comes from a decades-long background of experimentation and a bleeding-edge production ethos, merging his brolic style with countless genres and motifs. New York’s Rasp-5 meets his aggressive gait from the other side of the spectrum, transitioning from a background in traditional hip-hop compositions to a virulent and impactful lyricist directly at the center of a new marriage between bass-driven beats and narrative-driven songwriting. Combining their talents for a trans-Atlantic sonic dive, The Rust is incredibly excited to host the premiere of Reso and Rasp-5’s latest minted collaboration, “Steep Tech”.

The usual combination of hip-hop and bass music ingredients would have choice lyrical cuts atop a polished, synth-laden backing track, but we’re dealing with two musicians with a focus on novelty; eschewing the safer blends of jazz or trip-hop instrumental arrangements, “Steep Tech” offers an exceptionally grungy interpretation, fusing dissonant tones and the bright tails of steel-coated drums for an industrial impact. Rasp-5’s wordplay and playful call-and-response between bars rest between each sharp transient, pushing the track in parallel with its percussive underbelly. With a keen ear for leaping across territorial boundaries, Reso and Rasp-5 successfully showcase the evolving dynamics of lyrically-driven productions, keeping listeners on their toes, and our heads spinning on a perpetual swivel.

Happy WUMP Wednesday, folks! Today we’ve got a really special single by @Soul-Suppliers, featuring the wordsmith @Rasp-5, who is adroit at tackling complex concepts in his lyrics and masterfully painting a picture with his cutthroat flow. Oh, and in case you didn’t know, Soul Suppliers is a powerhouse funk duo consisting of WUMP artists @Pi-Wrecks and @MistOutMusic. Each of them brings a different style of funky bass music to the table, and the synergy of their two creative minds results in a hefty dose of soul and feel-good, high energy funk: hence the name Soul Suppliers.

If you’ve been living under a rock and haven’t heard the genius that is NYC-based rapper/MC/lyricist, Rasp-5, then you’re in for a real treat. Prepare to fall in love with your new favorite lyrical mastermind, as his verses take us deep into the infinite rabbit hole that is the human neocortex, or as he puts it, “the mind’s spiderweb.” Not only are Rasp-5’s lyrics a refreshing dose of originality and purposefulness in the increasingly substanceless realms of “hip-hop”, but his meticulously crafty flow and crisp articulations prove that he really is on some kind of different level than most MC’s these days. It’s clear that he’s a poet at heart, a painter with words who has no interest in following any kind of generic meter or predictable rhyme scheme, and Soul Suppliers provide the perfect canvas for him to work his magic.

The intro eases us into a dusty, old school vibe as the percussion gradually shifts from a subtle background element to a powerful, driving beat, providing the backbone for bluesy guitar licks and saxophone melodies. Right away you can tell this piece is going to be a special one, as the clean production and flawlessly layered samples instantly capture the heart and open it up to receive the transmission that Rasp-5 offers in the following moments. With familiar depictions of the esoterically psychedelic nature of the universe and playful, yet potent, articulations of inner dialogues, ‘Different Points of View’ truly offers some insight into the nature of perspective and what it means to exist within a world that is merely a reflection of our inner state of being. Add a dose of introspective honesty and a pinch of creative filter work, and you’ve got a fresh fusion of electro-soul and hip-hop that is sure to inspire producers and MC’s around the world to expand their horizons. 

‘Different Points of View’ is a masterpiece from start to finish, as it is a singularly cohesive piece that will undoubtedly get you movin’ and groovin’, particularly during the heavier sections where Pi Wrecks & Dave Kallman let loose with some tasteful aggression and grittiness. These sections offer the perfect compliment to the soulful melodies, and they give Rasp-5 the opportunity to show off his attitude and grit, demonstrating how well-rounded all 3 of these guys are in their respective crafts.

Joining forces from across the Atlantic, Slug Wife’s brazen co-founder Seppa, their resident battle-waxer Lone Drum, and NYC’s very own Rasp-5 busted through the Scoville scale with their latest single, “Dripper”. 

Pushing bass weight through its paces and fusing low-end ferocity with hip-hop fundamentals, the track is overt, in-your-face, and resoundingly guttural. Rasp-5 stokes the fires of lyricism with sauntered bars and a liquified pattern scheme, while Seppa’s trademarked synthesis slips from out of every downbeat in a boisterous dance between prose and grit. That dance intensifies with Lone Drums audacious scratching, culminating a firestorm of both precision cuts and off-kilter jabs. It’s a staunch tip of the hat to two sounds with far more than common ground between them, curated by our three favorite ne'er-do-wells in the street.
