Some record labels we hold in particularly high regard, and Brighton-based WOLF Music Recordings is absolutely one of them. Forty-nine releases deep since its 2009 birth, WOLF’s catalogue is artistically diverse and made up only of high quality musical produce.

Needless to say, we’ve premiered some WOLF music before, so we’re excited to again have premiere rights to some of their music. This time, we’ve got the A3 track, Keep it H 2000, of their 46th EP, Pedro and Jenna Camille’s This Is What I’m Going Through.

The record features five tracks spanning predominantly jazz and house, scattered and sometimes covered with broken beat and more experimental elements.

Keep it H 2000 brings the voice of Washington DC’s Jenna Camille’s to the fore. This track is probably the EP’s quintessential crossover point between jazz and house. Jenna’s light and amicable voice is held up by the intricate percussion, smooth keys and bass and playful synth melodies of her production partner from Porto, Pedro.

The track is almost straight jazz until toward the end when an off-beat hi-hat cuts a whole new groove into the rhythm, lifting the song out of a smokey jazz-club atmosphere and into something lighter and house-driven.

Special mentions are due to the last two tracks on the record: B1 shows off Pedro’s stylish production skills, while the experimental flare of the EP shines through the ultimate track in its short but sweet 80 seconds. Due for release on July 20, you can bank on this being another notable notch in WOLF’s musical belt.

Munir represents the new wave of millennial multi hyphenates - Bandung’s boogie darling is a record collector, label owner, graphic designer, and music producer who has put Indonesia on the map with his deliriously infectious disco edits.

His vault is the envy of many collectors, well stocked with soul rarities, all thanks to his uncle, who often brought back precious loot from his travels as a sailor.

Growing up in the capital of Indonesia’s West Java province greatly shaped the producer’s musical influence - the advent of bootlegging culture reached its height in the eighties, where the ripping of obscure pop, funk, and boogie from vinyl to cassettes exploded throughout the city. Munir continues this legacy in his technique by actively sampling cassette tapes, to retain the crackling bootleg authenticity, and sharing that bit of aural culture through his work - some things can never grow old.

Munir has had a few releases under the label, so he is no stranger to the Darker Than Wax family - but this latest project from the irresistible force is definitely one of the most exciting yet. “Veranda Grande” still retains his signature analogue sound and is very much driven by rhythm and groove, albeit a little more polished and void of the campy, sampled vocals. The dynamics abound the course of the album grows funkier in their little variations and is one that keeps rewarding with repeat listens.

New Zealander Julien Dyne is a multi-instrumentalist with a long and impressive history of collaborative, live and solo musicianship. He is best known for his solo work as BBE and having worked with the likes of Theo Parrish, Steve Spacek, Andreya Triana and Lord Echo. In addition to this - having remixed the likes of Marcel Vogel, Ghostwave and Leroy Burgess (alongside Frank Booker) - Dyne has also accumulated a number of accolades over the course of a 10-year career including but not exclusive to being hotly tipped by both Moodymann and Gilles Peterson.

Dyne’s new project for 2018 is the 11-track LP, Teal, on Miles Cleret’s legendary Soundway Records. The album, a masterpiece of future soul and afro-percussive house, is more uptempo than what we’re used to from Julien, and it’s a welcome change of pace. The project practically oozes soul while demonstrating Julien’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist and visionary producer. Included are collaborations with fellow New Zealander Mara TK, long term band-mate Ladi6, Fat Freddy’s Drop’s trumpeter Toby Laing, Australian vocalist Tim Guy, and Jazz luminaries Jonathan Crayford and Jon Bell.

While it’s hard not to discuss each track in excruciating detail, we’ll take a look at the second track on the album, “YouYou.” Julien’s synth-work is on display from the jump, as big reverbed hits ring out before the percs start knockin’. This track is a certified vibe-bringer, and if we stripped most of the instrumental away, the bassline alone would cause a ruckus. Playful arpeggios and Julien’s masterful use of delay add so much movement to the track, making it impossible for listeners to get bored. Most impressively, “YouYou” feels like an organized live jam. What more could you want?

As a whole, this is a body of work fit for the dancefloor and for home listening. Double threats like this shouldn’t be missed, so grab the double vinyl and add it to your already impressive collection of tunes. What tune we've got for you today. Kerem has been catching the attention of many tastemakers recently with his funk laden, heavily swung grooves. Giving people like Andrés and Theo Parrish a run for their money 'Turkey's most soulful' sure knows his way round a synth or two. Following the release of ‘Happy Song’, the first single from forthcoming album ‘Break The Wall’, MF Robots reveal the full extended version of the song alongside remixes from Kenny Dope, Kaidi Tatham and Daz-I-Kue.

It’s only right that Kenny Dope should be the first producer to remix Jan Kincaid and Dawn Joseph’s new MF Robots project, considering the trio’s shared musical history. Kenny Dope began reworking Jan’s ‘Brand New Heavies’ material back in the early 90’s as one half of Masters At Work, helping the band reach club-land over and over again with a series of iconic remixes, recorded during the golden era of MAW’s output.

It’s no surprise then that there’s more than a hint of that special, Latin sunshine-infused mid-90’s House sound in Kenny’s rework of Happy Song, which showcases Dawn’s impeccable vocals over an infectious rhythm track and ultra-funky horn stabs. An instrumental version of Kenny’s mix is also included for the House purists, as well as the full, extended original version of Happy Song, packed with tight musicianship and more than its fair share of great grooves.

Pioneers of the UK Broken Beat movement and contributors to its most emblematic group, Bugz In The Attic, it seems almost inconceivable that Kaidi Tatham & Daz-I-Kue have never actually worked on a remix together before. As strange as it may sound, it’s true, and their powerhouse rework of ‘Happy Song’ is most definitely worth the wait.

About MF Robots:

Meeting in 2013 while recording and performing with one of the UK’s most commercially successful Acid Jazz bands, legendary UK drummer Jan Kincaid and vocalist Dawn Joseph discovered immediate musical chemistry and began writing songs together right away. They soon left the band to concentrate on their own work, starting MF Robots (Music For Robots) and releasing an eponymous debut in 2018. The album was so well received that the duo soon morphed into a band as they found themselves in-demand at venues and festivals all over Europe.

Forthcoming long player ‘Break The Wall’ represents a new benchmark for Jan and Dawn, reflecting the MF Robots project coalescing and maturing while fine-tuning their material, both on the road and in the studio.

MIMS is delighted to premiere “Come Inside”, the second single lifted from Italian pianist, composer and producer, Nicola Guida’s forthcoming ‘Speleology’ album, due for release early next year on Inner Circle Music, the prestigious US label headed by sax legend Greg Osby. 

“Come Inside” is a laid back exploration of jazz and hip hop, featuring Karnival Kid on MC duties. His nonchalant yet powerful delivery recalls Loyle Carner, and flows beautifully over Guida’s delicate playing, melting the notes of his piano into a seamless harmonic stream. Soothing flutes provide the melodic line throughout, with additional production adding layers of sonic richness.

A disciplined virtuoso and a freethinking, genre-bending pianist, Nicola Guida is a London-based Italian jazz pianist, composer and producer. Academician at heart - he's the author of two respected thesis on jazz and holds a Masters in Philosophy. On “Come Inside”, Nicola tells us "I'm so delighted to release this tune which contains a sample of one of my heroes, legendary Italian composer Piero Piccioni".

“Come Inside” will be released on November 27 on all digital platforms.
