13. For Two

My wife bought a fabulous original watercolour painting of purple poppies and she left it on the music stand of my piano. As I sat down to practice I gazed at the painting and improvised this track. It has two aspects - the present day image of poppies blowing in the wind and the associated remembrance of soldiers who died in battle.

I recorded the improvisation and practised it until I could play the left hand part without it sounding too amateurish - at the end of recording the track my left hand felt about ready to fall off!

Eyes Wide Open

This is truly the most wonderful time of the year - purely magical. And I think it ought to be accompanied by music which beckons nostalgic warmth. This version of Dwell was born of late nights at a piano...always wondering if the melodies of the original could be rewritten in a rather free and spontaneous fashion. This is what emerged. It is best enjoyed under a star-lit sky as the snow falls  - of course with several angels & baby deer in your midst as you sip hot drinking chocolate. Seasons are wild entities - ebbing and flowing carelessly. We cannot control them - only participate. The moment we attempt to sustain them, their inherent wonder dissipates. The flavor subsides. The seasons change - cynically indifferent to our disposition.

So let's learn to be present in our season. Here. Now. All of you fully engaged in the current moment. The conflict. The flavor and color that life is lavishing upon you. The decanting of the human soul. And if we can do that, we will indeed be changed into people who lack nothing and receive everything.

72 hours + cereal + wine (not mixed with cereal) + sporadic visits from my cat Wynter...

I wrote this piece to accompany a trailer I scored for "Hearts of Men." I had 3 days and the editor temped the trailer with Jonsi's music as well as a selection from Hans Zimmer's "Interstellar" score. Holy crap. How do you even compete? Well, you don't. You just write the best you can and hope you didn't completely fail.
