The American poet Sylvia Plath composed her well-known poem Lady Lazarus in the autumn of 1962, a few months before her suicide on 11 February 1963. Lady Lazarus and other poems of that period were collected and published in Ariel, one of her most famous posthumous poetry collections. My work’s title I have done it again is the very first line of Lady Lazarus. In this work I am inspired by the imagery of this poem: the antagonistic attitude, the depressed inner-self, the obsession with death, and the rebirth from ashes. I attempted to rebuild and reinterpret this imagery through incorporating the vocal technique of extreme metal music, without quoting the original poems. 

Artist biography

Based in Hong Kong, Alex Yiu releases his music under the alias Alexmalism and it’s available on Bandcamp and Soundcloud. The sound of Alexmalism is a combination of influences coming from minimalism, industrial, sound art, post-trance, pop and even classical music. As a former member of the local underground club music collective Absurd TRAX, he has performed and DJed in many venues and festivals such as XXX, OIL Club, ALL Club, Berghain, Sónar Hong Kong 2019, CTM Festival 2020, NTS Radio, HKCR, SHCR and Boiler Room China. As a practicing sound artist, he has exhibited and performed at Taikwun Contemporary, Times Museum, Para Site, 100ft. PARK and A+ Contemporary.  His debut EP ‘TKO’ was released by Absurd TRAX on Bandcamp in Dec 2018. Alex Yiu is currently a PhD candidate in the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong. His research interests include the current deconstructed club music scene on social media, Hong Kong Underground music scene and the production mode after social media.
