"This mix was recorded in July 2021 at an indoor club in Omotesando, when lockdown was briefly loosen and was allowed to party at night little bit (maybe for about 2 weeks). It’s an excerpt of that all nighter set I have played, everyone wearing mask so was not able to see their faces but seemingly people were having a good time."

q. please introduce yourself

My name is yolabmi.
I mainly compose using modular synthesizers. In addition, I do field recording as my life work and I am doing my own research on ambient music and contemporary music.
My favorite thing is to record in a place without artifacts which is quite difficult for modern society. Often times I'm disappointed to get home and hear that there is an artifact somewhere.

q. is there a story behind the mix, how did it come together?

My heart has been exhausted for the last few years. It goes without saying that this is due to this pandemic world, but even before that, I may have been tired of human beings themselves. At the time of the recording I was trained in my roots, mostly classical music especially piano. So, I thought re-listening to those sounds would bring me back to the starting point. A common theme in creating songs and mixes is to reconstruct the memories of those sounds such as the sound of my grandmother or past loves, or my dog, or people I'll never meet again. I lay on on the couch reconstructing daydreams of my childhood.
My mind becomes stable and I fly out the empty room.

q. in your opinion, what would be the ideal circumstances to enjoy your mix?

Lie on the sofa in a room that is as safe and relaxing as possible. Or on an empty quiet beach in the warmer months.


q. describe a favorite object in your living room.

My favorite thing is Henri Rousseau's giant jigsaw puzzle of the painting "Carnival Evening”（1886）.
I love this painting.

q. are you working on any projects right now (music or non-music)?

I'm currently working on a live set to be released this year (I'm desperate because the deadline is near.....). I am also working on a work that will be released later this year. I will concentrate on creating during this pandemic where there is a lot of time but little connection.

Koenig's Nmesh project has a discography spanning back to 2001 in IDM-experimental genres, but in 2013 the artist began experimenting within the vaporwave genre with Nu.wav Hallucinations In addition to the critically acclaimed album Pharma in 2017

There isn’t anything quite like getting lost in the foggy, twisting works that Alex Koenig makes as Nmesh.

His albums — 2013’s Nu.Wav Hallucinations and 2014’s Dream Sequins — were sprawling, overwhelmingly dense collage pieces made from commercials, samples from the depths of YouTube, and synth textures that ran from silly elevator Muzak to bad trip psychedelia to moments of startling beauty. As you stumbled through those sonic labyrinths you’d encounter others — disembodied voices, drifting through like ghosts. The chatter could shift from mundane to hilarious, from terrifying to emotionally resonant.

Still, his albums are laser-focused compared to the impossibly huge worlds Koenig builds on his mixes. His 260-minute (that’s 4.20 in hours) Welcome To The Warp Zone mix for TinyMixTapes moved through each of its extended thematic sections like some kind of giant, slow-breathing beast. It was an easy pick for our Bandcamp Release Of The Month — but more importantly, it was a clear sign that we had to get this guy to do FACT mix.

So now at just a single second over two hours, we present this double-wide FACT mix from Nmesh. It’s a hell of a ride, with a generous double-dip of LSD and all the peaks and valley that come with that. Here you’ll find the sonic trickery of iconic plunderphonics originator John Oswald holding court with anonymous vaporwave producers while Hype Williams and James Ferraro nestle in with Raymond Scott. It ties all these voices — young, old, dead, legendary, undiscovered, anonymous — together into a legacy of sonic adventuring with Koenig as a welcome host.

With a body of work equally cinematic and sonically vivid, Japanese composer yolabmi has already set a considerable musical footprint with a string of albums released on VAAGNER, Casement Exchange, Perfect Aesthetics and other initiatives. Each segment and soundscape by yolabmi appears to be a dream-like vision where intimate atmospheres, alluring melodies and unexplored experiments intertwine. The following adventure seems to lead through many different lands.

Splinters as a composition has a dream like quality, dark and enigmatic. Electronic noise colours the drone and bubbling soundscapes of a somewhere. Repeating musical phrases mix with recognisable sounds from life - a spoken utterance, a rumbling train. As a listener you drift with the current through misty scenes, on a journey down a river towards some marshland on the edge of an urban sprawl.

Made in response to an invitation from TACO! - an artist space in Thamesmead in South East London - Splinters documents Kate Carr’s relationship with that space, and the area of London it is located in. Over an 18 month period Kate kept a growing sonic diary of her journeys to the space from her home, her construction of work in the gallery, her wanderings around the green spaces and urban architecture, the coming and goings of visitors and the artistic material from other artists and musicians working at the space. This work is a sonic portrait of a time and a place, and the actions and events within it.


Splinters includes audio samples from concerts and exhibitions held at TACO! Featuring material from live sets by Liz Helman, Tom White, Rebecca Lennon, Pouya Ehsaei, Jonathan Higgins and Hannah Dargavel-Leafe, and audio material from the exhibitions Scratch! by George Barber, and Heavy View by Laura Yuile.
