To be honest: quarantine has been a challenge. I've found myself going back and forth about whether I'm feeling "musical" on any particular day, struggling to find new things that inspire me, and using the many emotions this pandemic has brought up to explore new sounds and tell my story in different ways. 

But it's been positive in an unexpected way, too. I've rediscovered my love for deeper, minimal sounds and the simplicity and power that exists within them. 

This edition of my Forms | States mix comes from an afternoon I spent taking a batch of new tunes and playing them for the first time, finding a groove on the fly that spoke to me in the moment. Dive in and see how it speaks to you, too.

Lockdown Sessions 005: Mikey Lion

Although it was such a bummer that we couldn’t return to the Black Rock City this year, I was so grateful to be invited back to DISTRIKT’s stage for the 2020 virtual burn. I kicked off Wednesday’s fantastic lineup with some of my favorite grooves to get your day going, and it truly reminded me how much I miss playing on-playa.

Torie’s sound is multifaceted – to say the least. Coming from a global upbringing and current home base in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has been curating sonic adventures as a DJ and event producer for a decade. Torie interweaves elements of breakbeats, house, minimal, dark & driving techno, garage, acid, and drum and bass – balancing a line between heavy-hitting basslines and soulful vocals with ear-catching melodies.

She believes in the power of groove and always plays with one core intention in mind: to bring newfound life to the dancefloor.

As a core lead of Inquiry Collective and Inquiry Records, a builder & maker with Burning Man art cars ICARUS and Dusty Rhino, a resident DJ of You’re Welcome SF, and a co-founder of Dance With Haha, Torie draws inspiration from the dusty plains of the playa, the curious explorations of the Mojave desert, the underground dancefloors of SF, & the interstellar endeavors of ICARUS & its motley crew.

You may have also seen her with renowned crews like Space Cowboys, Distrikt, Ego Trip, and Desert Hearts – at the annual Breakfast of Champions block party on New Year’s Day for six consecutive years – or on the festival circuit at events including Lightning in a Bottle, Outside Lands, EDC Las Vegas, Northern Nights, Desert Hearts, The Untz Festival, Umbrella Weekend, Enigma, and Outside in Equinox.
