From @yotorieee : FULL TRANSPARENCY: THIS IS REALLY MESSY. But given the story surrounding it, I’ve decided to release it as-is rather than trying to re-record. I was playing on a broken mixer in the middle of the desert (which I didn’t discover until I tried it during my start), battling Mother Nature, and just said f*ck it and embraced it. This was a huge lesson in being humble, and a strong reminder that part of DJing is being able to work with whatever’s thrown at you. 

This was perhaps my most experimental set ever, and arguably the most memorable I’ve played yet. Read the story below, and laugh with me as you listen.

As I came onto the decks, I learned from the prior DJ – DJ Spacecamp – that “some of the cues don’t work”. Naturally, I’m like – shit, ok, what am I getting myself into? One of my first mixes is a disaster bc at that moment, I was testing out & learning that ALL FOUR cue buttons were stuck on “ON”. I realize that I can’t cue anything & am gonna be mixing blindly. Panic slightly ensues – but after a few min, I finally find my flow. (Lesson learned: always assume that gear in the elements will break.)

This set is v sentimental to me b/c it was a full-circle moment. At my first Curiosity 5 years ago, this running joke that “Torie hates breaks” started. It has lived on ever since, so I obvi wanted to fuck with everyone by playing breaks / left-field / eclectic sounds I’ve been loving out of the UK and Australia. It was only fitting that amongst this absurdity, I had to bring back the joke that had been such a big part of my growth – both with Inquiry & as an artist. 

As that initial terrible mix happened, I yelled to the crowd: "Don't mind me, just figuring out a broken mixer over here." I was trying to figure out what I could hear and not hear, and it quickly clicked that none of the buttons would do anything. Alas, I’ve decided not to fix it afterwards since this was such a hilariously frustrating moment that was also SO memorable. I played this entire set sans cues – using the screen, very loud headphones (sorry, ears), and my track memory as much as I could. It put my skills to the test, pushed all of my limits, and was so absurd – but so fitting for Curiosity. I’ll own my mistakes here. It was messy, but this is part of what makes you grow as an artist.

An aside: I started with Partiboi69 to follow Spacecamp's absolute flooring incredibleness of a set (real talk: best set of the weekend). PB69 has been a much-loved artist that we discovered over quarantine & has brought a lot of laughter to my friend group, so that silliness was really where I wanted to start my set before I dove into 1.5 hrs of music that I knew would surprise a lot of people. This isn’t a sound that I’ve played out much before, so I was stoked to explore this on such an incredible soundsystem in my favorite place on earth – the desert. 

I left my set so mad at the mixer situation, but eventually realized that at the end of the day, this shit happens. You have to pull thru, do work, and make the best of any given situation. You have to keep moving forward.

for our @icarusartcar fundraiser at Monarch SF in April 2022, our resident DJs each chose a friend to b2b with - so i grabbed my east coast sista @itsmekatiemarie & we teamed up for this new duo project we're working on that we've aptly named // chaos theory // 

full transparency, as is par for course: i threw katie into the fire a bit when i told her i'd like to play *very fast techno and sum breaks sitting around 128-145 bpm* & she was also new to the v10 mixer (what a learning curve that damn thing is). the first few track transitions here are messy, no doubt - i was showing her how to use the mixer on the fly, we were getting into our groove, and, well, you know how chaos can go in a packed club w a lot of loud noises. but that's the fun of it, right? 

regardless - once we got into it, we damn went, and we piloted the shit out of that spaceship. 

enjoy some minimal house, techno, acid techno, & breaks + left-field garage soundin' stuff. strap in for a helluva ride cuz this one's a damn adventure with a helluva groove.

Live mix from It's A New Day + Breakfast Of Champions Jan 1 2020 on the Dusty Rhino stage 4:30-5:30pm. Bouncy dirty funky house with a couple slappin' breaks. The vibe at the event was off the charts, and this set captures a lot of dance music history just as the event has for 20 years. It was a huge honor to help create something as epic as what went down on the streets of San Francisco on the first day of the new decade.

The fast-rising duo Maur get set to make their Sola debut this September with the exhilarating peak-time track Set You Free.

'Set you Free is one of about 10 original tracks we wrote at the start of 2020. We wanted to start working on some more melodic material and this one just felt right from the very beginning. We then sent it to Hannah (Faber) to work on the vocal which we co-wrote together & the outcome is very exciting!' - Maur

British duo Maur have pure finesse when it comes to their newest production. Set You Free cuts right to the chase, with an immediate euphoric melody which is overlaid with a powerful bass and catchy snares. After the first breakdown, you’re introduced to the vocal hook, which dominates the track with a fierce female lead who cries out “I really want to feel you next to me… because you’re always on my mind” creating a sense of longing which then swiftly builds to a crescendo of ecstasy.

Maur was formed by British pair Dan Clare and Dylan May in 2015. Both established DJ’s, they soon began creating the energetic and melodic sounds they have become known for playing out. After several years of releasing music, in the past nine months they have gathered a thundering momentum with break-through releases on labels such as SOLA, CR2, ViVA Music and W&O Street tracks. They also released on club night Mixology’s imprint MXO Records a track titled ‘Gospel Man’, which was heavily supported on dance floors and radio shows across the world.

Torie’s sound is multifaceted – to say the least. Coming from a global upbringing and current home base in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has been curating sonic adventures as a DJ and event producer for a decade. Torie interweaves elements of breakbeats, house, minimal, dark & driving techno, garage, acid, and drum and bass – balancing a line between heavy-hitting basslines and soulful vocals with ear-catching melodies.

She believes in the power of groove and always plays with one core intention in mind: to bring newfound life to the dancefloor.

As a core lead of Inquiry Collective and Inquiry Records, a builder & maker with Burning Man art cars ICARUS and Dusty Rhino, a resident DJ of You’re Welcome SF, and a co-founder of Dance With Haha, Torie draws inspiration from the dusty plains of the playa, the curious explorations of the Mojave desert, the underground dancefloors of SF, & the interstellar endeavors of ICARUS & its motley crew.

Torie has performed with KiNK, Superflu, Justin Martin, Overmono, Maya Jane Coles, Smilk, Anja Schneider, Tale of Us, Patrice Baumel, Marbs, Mikey Lion, Porky and Evan Casey, Rinzen, Dance Spirit, Eskuche, Marques Wyatt, Tycho, KMLN, Sabo, Justin Jay, Hoj, Kevin Knapp, Shiba San, Joeski and more. 

You may have also seen her with renowned crews like Space Cowboys, Distrikt, Ego Trip, and Desert Hearts – at the annual Breakfast of Champions block party on New Year’s Day for six consecutive years – or on the festival circuit at events including Lightning in a Bottle, Outside Lands, EDC Las Vegas, Northern Nights, Desert Hearts, The Untz Festival, Umbrella Weekend, Enigma, and Outside in Equinox. 

In 2025, you can find Torie throwing renegades and pop-ups with the Inquiry crew across California in clubs, deserts, undisclosed locations and beyond… as well as performing in SF, SD, Reno, LA and more.
