2013 was another exceptional year for Will Saul’s ever-consistent, no-nonsense Aus Music imprint. As well as records from the increasingly familiar family fold - Dusky, Bicep, Midland, Sei A, Leon Vynehall - a new batch of producers stepped in as the label welcomed debuts from both Huxley and Glimpse, along with the return of fellow West Country resident, Komon (Kieren Lomax).

It’s that strong Somerset connection that continues to play a role in Aus' output, as the first release of 2014 sees the Bristolian pairing of Appleblim (Laurie Osborne) and Komon join forces once again on the ‘Jupiter EP.’

Appleblim, along with partner Sam Shackleton, together made up Skull Disco, the mid-2000 label-cum-collaborative project that was rightly regarded as one of the most adventurous and aesthetically complete enterprises to come out of the formative years of dubstep. Since Skull Disco's demise in 2008, Osborne has been running his current label, Apple Pips, which continues to curate a robust release schedule that lays its roots in the joining of dots between the deep, sub-focused textures of early dubstep and the classic house and techno sounds of Detroit and Berlin.

Venturing out earlier in 2013 together on “Gas Jam/Silencio,” both Komon and Appleblim struck up a productive working relationship that saw them detailing an altogether more House-influenced direction, rich in texture and full of clarity. This influence and shape-shift in direction was also clearly audible on Komon's solo Aus release of last year, 'Walk the Walk,' which laid down something of a new blueprint for his future productions.

With this new EP, the pair steer left-of-centre, by way of bumping house, coloured with a low-swung boogie, rinsed in '80s New Wave nostalgia, and underpinned by the brooding swagger of thundering sub bass.

This time he takes on the Slumber Session and packs in a tonne of unreleased exclusive material to deliver this beautiful, ethereal soundtrack to help you journey through your dreams. "This Slumber Session mix gave me a great opportunity to make a playlist of something I would want to listen to when unwinding, or to just fall asleep to. I wanted it to be able to exist in the background, without focus, whilst at the same time having elements of detail and beauty scattered amongst the layers of sound unravelling as the mix progresses.

In some ways you can think of it as a soundtrack to a dream. There are moments of calm flowing smoothly into more abstract sections. Textures build to go from sparse emotive landscapes to darker, brooding moments of tension. I wanted it to be dynamic, taking in a variety of styles and influences, whilst giving the listener a coherent experience and painting some interesting images in their minds.

It also gave me the chance to put in a lot of unreleased tracks of mine. I make a wide variety of styles outside of my normal output, so it was great to have an outlet for some of that material. There are also a lot of field recordings I've made over the last few years throughout the mix, including some from my travels. The opening section of music features the sounds of walks in Sydney and San Francisco, which at the time was just some subconscious grabbing of sound recordings without any kind of artistic purpose - it just sounded cool at the time. It seemed fitting when I realised where the sounds were from, as the mix would have been the perfect playlist for a lot of my sleep deprived travels.

I ended up getting so involved putting together this mix that there's a lot of live tweaks of outboard reverb and delay units layered on certain tracks to try and get the sense of space I wanted to achieve and give the mix some breathing space. I find that ambient music can be incredibly beautiful and achieve the range of emotions other music can. I hope that you enjoy the musical selection and can immerse yourself in it, even with the emphasis away from the hooks and rhythms of traditional electronic dance music."

@International-Feel label boss Mark Barrott found a tape called Songs For Sunsets in a charity shop in Paris and made it his mission to hunt down the unknown artist behind it, eventually tracking down Australian library composer Len Leise. Fast forward and Len is about to release another nature themed EP, Music For Forests, this time through International Feel (out 8th December) and not limited to cassette. Floating Inside A Cone

The best slumber sessions do more than just let your mind wander, they take you away to another place entirely. This one does just that. Currently counting down the days until the release of Berlin collective Average Negative’s wondrous debut vinyl LP and art book, Shadow Mountain, we’re stoked to have a mix from the project’s Sydney-based synth-pop wizard Marco Vella. Slicker than your average snoozy slumber session, his mix sets your imagination free. It is a wild camping adventure that fast-forwards through time and lets you watch as day turns to night and lush green mountain forests alive with the sounds of panpipes and flutes turn into unexplored moonlit lands littered with cicadas. Things take a turn for the industrial as the daydreamers stumble on a secret government base and inadvertently involve themselves in some real sci-fi sounding shit before – as often happens in dreams – all danger melts away to the sounds of funky psychedelic bass-slapping. “I wanted to make a mix that showcased emerging artists from around the globe that have been an inspiration to my music and myself,” explains the Sydney producer. “I also added a few tracks from the archives that were a major influence to me at the time of recording Shadow Mountain. I hope this mix doesn’t bring on the z’s, but is ‘slumber’ enough to help you kick back and blow the froth off a couple.” Mission accomplished. Why Autonomous Africa?

Many of the problems Africa faces are a result of outside interference by other countries, and as the 21st century progresses we will see the continued pillage of African resources to feed the global capitalist machine on an unprecedented scale. Corrupt and greedy regimes gladly sell their land and mineral wealth to finance their own extravagant lifestyles while the vast majority of ordinary people see little or no improvement in their own lives. An autonomous Africa run by the people for the people, where African land is predominantly used to feed African people and Africa's vast wealth of resources is used to benefit the people of Africa seems the only logical way forward. Autonomous Africa's goal is to highlight this message and here presents to you 4 tracks of African inspired grooves.

We fully realise a small run, independently released 12" is going to make very little difference to the world, but doing something has to be better than doing nothing. The idea of an autonomous Africa may be naive and unrealistic, but at some point the world we live in will have to change or future generations are going to be left with very little as we consume way more than our fair share. We have collectively buried our heads in the sand thinking we are powerless to engender change. Individually we have little power but collectively, the power is ours.

About The Mtandika Mission
--------------------------

Mtandika is a large village in the dry Ruaha river valley, 400km west of Dar es Salaam. It is a very poor village.

One of the prime movers in the village is Sister Barberina Mhagala. Since she retired from being Headmistress of the Primary School in 2005, Sister Barberina has been developing a Trade School at Mtandika to provide skills training for girls who are either orphans or have no fees for secondary education. She started by building a classroom and dormitory for the Trade School girls who were given sewing lessons and learning to make garments to sell.

Because many of the children do not have homes locally, accommodation is critical. So Sister then built extra accommodation blocks, not only for some of the girls attending the Trade School but also for some 80 girls attending the local Lukosi Secondary School where there was no accommodation.

The girls are taught to be as self sufficient as possible and as well and grow their own food and rear animals in the school grounds.

Water supply is critical, as water is not only required for every day purposes at the school but for irrigating the shambas [allotments]. Water is currently pumped from the nearby perennial Lukosi river some 500 metres away using a petrol pump. Investigations into a cheaper alternative are being investigated.

Education is essential if Tanzania is to fully develop its full potential and anything is possible given the opportunity. As well as supporting Sister Barberina in her capital expenditure, some 10 of the children at the Trade School and 30 at local Secondary Schools who cannot afford the fees are sponsored by funds raised by the charity.
