Why all that deep sorrow while we can see each other elsewhere. Beyond the time boundaries, where no physics law can solve that state. Free of limitations, like an infinite beam, that's what I love to dream.

Today's sound file is "You Are the Son of God," Paul Nicholson's setting of a text from the Byzantine office for the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, which was written for my last mass at St. Peter's in the Loop in 1999. The Schola recorded this in the August of 2013 at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, IL. The organist is Cantor Michael D. Costello.

Tomorrow, for those Easterners who keep Pascha according to the Gregorian calendar,  is "Thursday in the Fifth Week of the Great Fast," when the Great (or Penitential) Canon of St. Andrew of Crete is sung as part of Matins.  The service is an unbelievable patchwork quilt of scriptural references to sinners and to strivers, all designed to be heard and prayed as we plunge into the last part of the Great Fast, urged to compunction and penance.

This sound file is the Kontakion and Ikos from the Great Canon.  The setting is called "ne po hlasu," (i.e., not according to a tone) and is from an 1806 collection called "Nap'iv iz Bohov'ijnich Cerkovnyj po obrazu p'inija Halicko-Ruskich Cervej," collected by Ihnatij Polotnjuk.

The Schola Cantorum of St. Peter's in the Loop recorded this on the cd "Have Mercy On Me, O God: Matins of the Fifth Week of the Great Fast with the Great Canon of St. Andrew of Crete," which was published in 1998 by The Liturgical Press, Collegeville, MN (www.litpress.org).

for He is everywhere present and fills all things!"
