Tunes for The Tall Pines

There is a summer festival in Japan where children make paper crafts to hang on bamboo trees. Based on the legend that this is to be the only day in the whole year when two lovers (stars) that were separated by the Milky Way get to meet one another, people also make wishes and hang them on the bamboo. I think this tradition shows that we want to believe that there are miracles in this world - that there are times when impossible things become possible. 

This prelude is warm, bright and vast. It consists of three main components: The first is the light and airy introduction and ending portraying paper crafts wavering on the tree. The second component depicts the calm stars above, in G major. The third part is the theme from the first prelude (“Paper Birds”). This theme that is shared between the first and last preludes act as bookends as they unite the idea of things we humans make with our hands and send out our thoughts up into the universe.

This is a live recording done at Sipos studios. We put down quite a few tracks in one day as we were well rehearsed leading up to steady gigging ( we had hoped ).   This is the blues version of of an originally folkish song written by me. Lyrics:

A tune that arose as I was on my way to buy celery and cabbage for my soup.

Original compositions played upon various acoustic instruments. 

At the moment, the majority of music I record is original folk tunes. Most of these tunes arise whilst out in natural ecosystems or shortly after visiting a natural ecosystem. The titles often reflect an aspect of the ecosystem I had noticed while the tune came about. Lately this is usually a species of bird.

Tin whistles and flutes appear the most often in my recordings; though mandolin, tenor guitar, lyre harp, jaw harp, dulcitar, and a handful of other instruments show up fairly often as well.
