Andrei Yakovlevich Eshpai (Russian: Андре́й Я́ковлевич Эшпа́й; 15 May 1925 – 8 November 2015) was an ethnic Mari (Russian and Soviet) composer. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR in 1981.

Eshpai was born at Kozmodemyansk, Mari ASSR, Russian SFSR to a Mari father and Russian mother. A Red Army World War II veteran, he studied piano at Moscow Conservatory from 1948 to 1953 under Vladimir Sofronitsky, and composition under Nikolai Rakov, Nikolai Myaskovsky and Evgeny Golubev. He performed his postgraduate study under Aram Khachaturian from 1953 to 1956.

Eshpai was the son of the composer Yakov Eshpai, and the father of the filmmaker Andrei Andreyevich Eshpai. On 8 November 2015, Eshpai died in Moscow from a stroke at the age of 90.

Nikolai Vasilievich Artsybushev (Russian: Николай Васильевич Арцыбушев; 7 March [O.S. 23 February] 1858 – 15 April 1937) was a Russian jurist, music publisher and promoter, and minor composer. His name is sometimes seen as Artsibushev, Artsybuchev, Artzibushev, Artzybushev, Artchibousheff, Arcybusev, etc.

Artsybushev was born at Tsarskoye Selo in 1858. His legal studies were at the Imperial School of Jurisprudence in Saint Petersburg, after which he practised in St Petersburg as an attorney. He also dabbled in music composition, and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov gave him private lessons in music theory after Mily Balakirev said his works showed some promise.He also became acquainted with the music publisher Mitrofan Belyayev and participated in his regular weekly gatherings called "Fridays" (Vendredis). To mark these occasions, a group of 10 composers including Artsybushev collaborated on a 16-part suite for string quartet, called Les Vendredis. His contribution was a Serenade in A major. He also collaborated with others on Variations on a Russian Theme, in versions for both string quartet and orchestra.

He was a member of the St Petersburg City Council. After Belyayev's death in 1903 he became chairman of the board of the Belyayev publishing house, in which capacity he had significant dealings with Alexander Scriabin. From 1908 to 1917 he was President of his city's branch of the Russian Musical Society, and later succeeded Rimsky-Korsakov as President of the Board of Trustees for the Society for the Encouragement of Russian Musicians.

In 1920 he moved to Paris and became a director of the Belyayev publishing house there. He died in Paris in 1937, aged 79.

Vasily Sapelnikov (1867–1941) was a Ukrainian-born Russian pianist celebrated for his virtuosic technique and refined interpretations, particularly of Romantic repertoire. Born in Odessa, he displayed remarkable musical talent from a young age, studying under prominent Russian teachers who nurtured his pianistic brilliance. His early promise led him to the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he studied with Louis Brassin and Karl Klindworth, gaining a solid technical foundation and a deep understanding of the German and Russian piano traditions. By his early twenties, Sapelnikov had already distinguished himself as one of the most promising pianists of his generation.

Sapelnikov’s rise to international recognition came through his close association with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The composer personally chose him to premiere his Piano Concerto No. 2 in G major in 1881, entrusting the young pianist with bringing the work’s demanding brilliance to life. Sapelnikov’s performance was met with high praise, establishing his reputation not only as a virtuoso but also as an artist of great sensitivity. His career flourished with concert tours across Europe, where he was admired for his technical mastery, interpretive nuance, and the ability to blend power with poetic expressiveness.

In addition to his concert career, Sapelnikov was deeply dedicated to teaching and the advancement of pianistic art. He held professorships in major conservatories, mentoring a new generation of pianists who would carry forward his stylistic and technical ideals. His repertoire ranged widely, but he was especially noted for his interpretations of Chopin, Liszt, and Russian composers of his time. Even in his later years, Sapelnikov remained active in music, embodying a lifelong devotion to the piano. His legacy endures as that of a bridge between the great Romantic tradition and the evolving artistry of 20th-century Russian pianism.

He is part of the bands Los Hermanos, Orquestra Imperial, and Little Joy, and released his first solo record, Cavalo, in Brazil in late 2013 and worldwide in May 2014. He also wrote and performed the (bolero style) narcocorrido "Tuyo", the theme song for the Netflix Original Series Narcos (2015) and Narcos: Mexico (2018), and wrote the score for the film Entebbe (2018). my first ever waltz, first in the series of the theme of flowers. stay tuned.

thought process: as a plant enthusiast, i thought to myself, how can i incorporate plant theme into my originals, and *boom*, thats that, my mom has an almost perennial arabian jasmine plant on our porch and, the scent crazily lingers everywhere throughtout the house at anytime of the day and like yeah, id just do that, as i always wanted to start a waltz series after my op.8 preludes.

Hopefully i perfectly captured the everlasting beauty of the jasmine flower with this one.

Flower Waltz, Op.9 no.1, Jasmine

second waltz of the series, it depicts the eerieness and hidden charm of the corpse lily or otherwise known as rafflessia arnoldii flower (its actually a parasitic flowering plant).

thought process: my first encounter with the plant goes all the way back in 2013, in kebun raya bogor/bogor botanical garden, there under the damp, dimmly lit foresty floor of a huge tree, lies the unmistakebly reddish dotted flower, with its stinkin sickly-sweet decaying smell, rafflessia doesnt have any stalk like any traditional flowers, and flies hovers around it like moths to a flame. with thats said, its sad to see that the plant is currently endangered, thats why theres a lot of effort to preserve these native beauty all over national parks and botanical gardens here in my country.
