Next up in Mr Bongo’s Record Club mix, we’re delighted to welcome Meanjin (Brisbane) based DJ, digger and promoter, @benny_chiu.

A key member of Meanjin’s scene, Benny has been putting on events in the city as part of the A Love Supreme collective since 2012. From small laneway get-togethers, to warehouse parties and club nights, live shows with legends Marcos Valle and Azymuth, to showcases with dancefloor icons like Theo Parrish, Marcellus Pittman and Gilles Peterson, Benny has had a hand in bringing a full spectrum of greats to the city that might not otherwise have made it.

That diverse and eclectic outlook is reflected in Benny’s DJing. As at home spinning jazz and soul, as he is broken beat and house, his ability to weave styles and genres together in a cohesive journey is a real talent. It’s one that has seen him sharing the bill with the likes of Hunee, Theo Parrish, Floating Points amongst many others.

For this two hour mix, Benny has put together a fittingly broad selection of favourites:

“This mix has a lot of elements that I'm really into. It’s on the brighter side for a ‘club’ mix but thought it would go down nicely for Mr Bongo. We got some jazz and Latin flavours mixed through the housey stuff. Fellow ‘Australian’ crew Oyobi with ‘Mi Ritmo’ is a fave. And I know this one has been getting plenty of play around but ‘Oyelo (Atjazz Love Soul Remix)’ by Sunlightsquare is such a tune. Musclecars latest album has been getting plenty of love lately as well, though ‘She Raised Us In Sunset Park’ from their earlier EP Street Dreams is a fave.”

Let's tak about Glenn Underground....
Glenn Underground’s early musical atmosphere was soaked in the very best jazz, soul, funk and disco. With many family members musicians and being a native Chicagoan Glenn existed as a kid in a toy shop when house music was born. In the early eighties he began expressing his love for rhythm and soul, fostering the house scene and priming his masterful music commentary. 
Later that decade he would begin producing and promoting his own pieces of music which set the tone for a truly astonishing and inspirational producer going to work on hundreds of magnificent records. Keeping the true sound of house music definitively alive.

Glenn Underground is the founding member of the Strictly Jaz Unit. He was raised on disco classics and freeform jazz in Chicago's Southside, the place where house music was born. Taking inspiration from Chicago's original pioneers, Larry Heard, Ron Hardy, Lil' Louis, and the like, Glenn has produced some of the most well respected deep house music of the past five years. His releases for Cajual, Prescription Guidance and Peacefrog have set the standard for sophisticated dance music. He is one of the few DJ's who can walk the line between deep jazz house, disco influenced house, and the kind of classics featured at the legendary parties of late 70's Chicago.

François K - House Is A Feeling

Electronic music has always been filled with innovative individuals, but even among such company, Dean Zepherin is a producer who has managed to find his lane and appeal.  Born and raised in London, a suitably eclectic city for a man of his musical persuasion he is renowned for his consistently genre-pushing productions, having also spent time in Berlin, it became another city that’s left its mark on his always-captivating sound.
To fully appreciate and understand Zepherin’s approach, it’s necessary to go back to his roots in Harrow, London as it was here where he first encountered soul, funk and jazz fusion records. From an early age he was obsessed with these out-there sounds, as well as their ability to metaphorically transport him to a world far away from the confines of his hometown.
Adopting a more electronic-based sound later on, he soon became a natural at conjuring up “house” tunes with more than a hint of soul, the likes of which spoke to his own Caribbean roots. In the process, Zepherin describes his own raison d’etre with concise charm as ‘championing the emergence of indigenous influence in electronic music’, something now so endemic to much of the most in-vogue house productions, displaying a worldview that values above all the organic and the human in this machine. 
While he’s undoubtedly best known for his work over the past nine years, establishing Tribe as one of the world’s leading labels pushing the afro and soulful envelope, his own legacy goes way back to 1988 when he released ‘Give me back your Love’ under the pseudonym Boyz in Shock, credited as the UK’s first soulful house record.
His label Tribe remains a vehicle for his many solo productions and collaborations and has hosted works and remixes from a diverse range of artists and legends across the electronic music board, as well as hosting his esteemed works with labels Defected, Suol, No Fuss, Soul 2 Soul, Vega records and Jack Trax. 
Zepherin’s productions deliver impeccable slices of soulful and afro sounds fused in a futuristic musicality in which he emphasises the tension that soul music can have, rather than the release. His tracks and particularly his dubs under his moniker Zepherin Saint, are often full of suspense and atmosphere – check his ‘Take You There’ on Suol, or his ‘Skyy and Butterflies Dubs’ released on his own imprint.
Equally respected as a DJ as he is a producer, Zepherin gained his schooling playing the London sound system circuit in the 80’s and managing the legendary Black Market record store in the 90’s.  His unique talents of playing dance music with no boundaries have been sought after in the likes of Japan, Africa, North America, Indonesia, Canada, Europe Australia and the Middle East, while on a club level he’s left his mark at world renowned clubs like Contact, Tresor, Watergate, Cielo, Stereo, Djoon, Ministry of Sound and Pacha. 
A man of many considerable sounds and styles, it’s hardly surprising that Dean Zepherin’s colourful and diverse approach continues to enthral clubbers and electronic music connoisseurs across the world.
