I added some guitars to TDK's excellent "Hoovering With a Hangover" from Chiptunes = WIN vol.2 (https://chiptuneswin.bandcamp.com/album/chiptunes-win-volume-2-2). This track was my favorite on the comp, and having the chance to work on it was really special for me. It got even sweeter when I got to talk with TDK, a real gentleman who contributed to the mixing and mastering to bring this awesome final result.

The Way You Say

This song begins in shadow, with ambient pads breathing like distant echoes, wrapping the listener in a veil of mystery. Subtle glowing arpeggios shimmer against the darkness, each note fragile yet radiant, like fragments of light breaking through an abandoned night sky. Beneath the stillness, a pulse of minimal dubstep stirs, its low vibrations grounding the piece in an unshakable gravity.

As the track unfolds, the atmosphere deepens — silence becoming rhythm, restraint becoming emotion. Then, as if a horizon suddenly bursts into color, the music ascends into a retro synthwave symphony: soaring leads, shimmering textures, and layers of luminous sound that expand like constellations across the sonic canvas.

Through it all, poetic and powerful lyrics emerge, weaving between shadows and neon, carrying the weight of longing and the intimacy of a voice remembered. The words feel timeless — not just sung, but carved into the air, heavy with meaning and infinite in resonance.

“The Way You Say” is more than music — it is an atmosphere, a confession, and a journey from obscurity into revelation, where every sound carries the glow of something eternal yet fleeting.

It's remake time, folks! Didn't manage to find the original release date for the song, but my best guess would be somewhere around 1996 or so, going by samples and technique. 

Usually, these remixes are a juicy stew of old and new -- I always start with bounced tracks from OpenMPT, and replace things like kicks and basses to clear up the mix. In this case, however, almost nothing survived since the mix was such a mess. The most rewarding part came when I finally nailed the drums (four layers of full kits!) and got to work on the brass. The song really came alive at that point, and the rest of the time was spent fiddling with the organ, which was the major copy-paste offender.

Oh, and the name differs slightly from the original, to avoid infringing on the trademark of a certain fast food chain.

I made a homage to 90's music using just Korg Gadget on the Nintendo Switch. If you listen carefully, I made references to 2 Unlimited's Twilight Zone, Barry Leitch's Top Gear OST, CoLD SToRAGE's Lemmings OST and Yuzo Koshiro's Streets of Rage soundtrack. A strange formula, but all 90's nonetheless!

Andrew is frequently sighted teaching student composers and game developers at Drexel University or otherwise assisting fellow musicians in the fields of production, mastering, and sound design.
