I love artists who explore many different fields of creativity . . . different forms of expression. John Lurie has been an actor, a painter, and also a musician. His original scores for the films of Jim Jarmusch (which he also starred in) are prized amongst my record collection. And so this mix revolves around the music of John Lurie. His solo work, his band The Lounge Lizards, and his work under the odd alias Marvin Pontiac. This mix is recorded straight from my turntable, and all the tracks are from records I’ve been listening to a lot over the last year or so. Enjoy!

“Process Interactive” by DEVICEFUL (aka DB) is based around a keen fascination with how much information comes into our minds and spirit; and how that process results in music. Memories, emotion, relationships, love, synths, voices, samples, percussion, and FX all sort of meld, pushed forward by the inspiration of other artist’s creations. So much being processed, and flowing back out as music/song creations that evolve into a bit of something to be heard, and hopefully enjoyed. While writing and producing these four tracks, Don Brown, the producer felt blessed to have so many amazing pallets of color to work from and so many incredible artists to be inspired by. One of his all-time favorites is Illusive Tuna. Their work has been and continues to be, very inspirational for him, and when they agreed to remix Creole Cave of Wonders for this EP, it put just the perfect point on it.

The collection of songs on Trentemøller’s sixth studio album, Memoria, traverses some ground fans will find familiar, but also digs deeper into themes of transience, and various forms of continuance. His latest single, “No More Kissing In The Rain” gives the impression that it’s easier to find comfort in the darkness when it feels like particles of light are only moments away from assembling, perhaps divulging a bright secret. 

“No More Kissing In The Rain” announces itself with an overture to a synth opera shot on supersaturated film. Warm waves of sweeping, lush pads soon land to make space for vocalist Lisbet Fritze’s tone-setting proclamation:
“My dear, I am running out of time.” 
Concurrently, her heartfelt vocals are pushed and pulled by an almost playfully mephistophelean synth line. Each glistening guitar glissando bloom projects the feeling that a series of curtains are being drawn back, revealing the next act. The chorus arrives like an unexpected sun flare, overexposing halide crystals, and smearing the emulsion.
“Is this the end of everything?”
It feels like the end of a relationship, but is the relationship between two people, or the corporeal being and its earthbound existence?

“You know I know we’re growing colder.” 
The final orchestral tag of this pocket symphony signals its closure. There’s no hint of trepidation, only a sense of comfort, albeit a vague one. 
Was the sun flare actually the light at the end of the tunnel?

If you saw WALL play in NYC or at SXSW (they were No. 2 on Time Out Austin’s top picks for SXSW 2016) you will recognize some of the tracks on their new LP, Untitled. "Everything In Between" was often a set opener, albeit in an instrumental form. Here we find the definitive full band arrangement, which shows a group capable of generating wave after wave of engaging post-punk. First single "High Ratings" advances the strengths of WALL's self-titled EP with it's look at modern anxiety stemming from social media addiction: "We're all guilty," as singer Sam York howls. Their rocking cover of Half Japanese's classic "Charmed Life" is probably the closest track in tone to "Cuban Cigars," the pop moment on the WALL EP. True to the original, it features perfectly skronky sax from Pill’s Ben Jaffe. "River Mansion" displays Vince McClelland's extensive post-punk guitar vocabulary with squalls, shrieks and plinks over the band's elegant Kroutrock groove with York and Skadden's cooing vocals occasionally synching with a slippery guitar riff. Fans of Skadden's former group, Finally Punk will appreciate "Save Me" – a tale of desperation with Skadden sharing lead vocal duties along with York. These are just a few examples of songs from this diverse and intense LP, showing us a band stretching out sonically and stylistically at their peak and right before their untimely demise. 

So there you have it -- a testament to a band that formed in an instant, burned brightly and left us with two great records. Did you see WALL at Palisades, The Silent Barn, Alphaville, Union Pool, and all the rest of them? Let this LP remind you or take you there for the first time.
