(... to bury a dead bird). as this loop was playing i found a dead bird outside my studio. i didn't have shoes on, but i didn't want it to just lie there so i walked through the snow and buried it among some green growth under some rocks.

the synth here is an arp2600 (korg FS) ... one of my favorite features of the synth is the built in speakers. it allows me to turn it on and play.. without having to worry about bringing up a console channel or doing any routing/patching. also, because of the semi-modular-ity (?) i can patch pedal FX into the signal path.

there are a couple of lovely pedals here.. aging the sound, like the dead bird.

A strange heady brew which juxtaposes music, sound effects, rudiments of vocal expression and various acoustic instruments among others in a compelling cut-up, reminding at times of People Like Us or Dirk Schaeffer's recent work for Peter Tscherkassky's movies. Two visionary maestros, Pierre Bastien and Michel Banabila, unite in their first collaborative album, Baba Soirée. The veterans of electronic music bring their unique expertise to the table, resulting in a captivating fusion of experimental styles. Bastien’s mechanical loops and experimental instrumental setups merge seamlessly with Banabila's sound design and impeccable skills of sampling collages. It's not a dance party, nor is it an avant-garde intervention. It's a soirée: a cultivated evening of sonic alchemy hosted by these two charismatic gentlemen.

Pierre Bastien is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with a background in French literature. He has spent decades crafting an idiosyncratic world of experimental sound with his self-built mechanical orchestra Mecanium. It was most notably showcased in audiovisual releases on Aphex Twin's Rephlex label. Bastien's creations are a mesmerizing combination of traditional instruments (he has a vast collection) and mechanical automatons. The violin in the track Rotomotor, for example, is physically played by one of his machines. In Baba Soirée, Bastien also plays a prepared cornet (Slow Dance, Banbas Aura), infusing the recordings with a breathy, dreamy dimension.

Michel Banabila, a sound artist, composer and producer, possesses an eclectic musical repertoire that defies genres. His seamless blend of minimal electronica, tribal ambient, and neo-classical influences has earned him a prominent place in the world of experimental music, and an impressive discography (Knekelhuis, Bureau B, Séance Center, a.o.). Banabila serves as the creative sampling editor for Baba Soirée, expertly weaving together the recordings to craft an evocative sonic tapestry.

The two share a curiosity for traditional instruments from various cultures. The instruments used in the recordings are shown in the cover artwork. A mutual admiration for each other's work paved the way for this fruitful artistic partnership of the Rotterdam-based artists: Collaborating on a single as a fundraiser for Yemen in 2022 set the stage for the creation of Baba Soirée.

For Pierre Bastien, Dada, Fluxus and International Situationism have played a significant role in shaping his artistic vision. The title Baba Soirée is an homage to Kurt Schwitters and Theo van Doesburg's "Kleine Dada Soirée" collaboration which took place exactly a century ago. There's an unmistakable stoicism and an anarchic not-giving-a-f*** attitude in these recordings by Bastien & Banabila, which resonates in the light of this Dada reference.

a random bit was looped in the phonogene whose output was sent to a mutable instruments frames module that split the signal down into 3 paths, one to a make noise echophon and two to two different filters.

various frames inside Frames were sequenced with a Maths.

the most interesting thing about this sound, i think, is the shifting off-kilter rhythm/accent.. which is a result of offsetting the maths LFO manually with the channel 1 knob.

"João Alegria is an essential figure in the Portuguese underground music scene. The numerous albums the Lisbon-based musician has released testify to a sonic vision akin to its object of study: unhurried and unperturbable, yet continuous and tempestuous.

Alegria’s music originates from a place we all inhabit but often seek to escape. It masterfully captures the essence of night, isolation, and depression. But while gloomy and mysterious at first glance, beneath a mantle of oozing drones and quasi-static industrial soundscapes lies a force that brings light to the surface. Think of staring at a black surface for too long; eventually, you begin to discern hues you hadn't noticed before. It is the same with Alegria’s music: the more you dwell on it, the greater the range of emotions it unveils – happiness and sadness, disgust and fear, surprise and anger – it is all there. This means Alegria’s music may not be for every moment, but it is undoubtedly for everyone – for those willing to lend their sensitivity to an immersive experience in which profound depth and subtle luminosity coexist.

Ouro bridges the gracefully melodic, short-composition style of Alegria's earliest work with the longer forms of his mid and late phases. Comprising 15 short compositions, each revolving around a particular motif that continually evolves, the album can be heard as a set of related drone-like and highly textural subdued atmospheres, characteristic of the guitarist's later work. These compositions transport the listener to the eye of a storm, where one experiences the surrounding chaos and violence from inside a bubble that juxtaposes silence with tension-filled noise.

To create Ouro, Alegria employed the techniques we have come to expect from him: a multitude of effects that transform strings into cosmologically resonant entities, objects – like the bow – with which he plays the guitar, and the cut-and-sew method of editing and digital experimentation. Additionally, field recordings, mostly absent in his most emblematic releases such as Vertical, are also featured. As a piece of contemporary experimental music, Ouro marks another milestone in Alegria’s relentless, nomadic journey through the realms of sound exploration. And it is pure gold – a delight to listen to – as the Portuguese translation of the title promptly reveals."
