A1 - Jeff Rushin - Confusion

The sixth release of Form and Function, is the second one of the Function series. This time it’s Qindek who provides his debut EP on the label. “Reach For The Cosmica” is a lovely journey through Qindek’s world. It’s the perfect combination of both abstract and functional. The weird meets the wonderful. The package is topped of by Setaoc Mass who does an incredible job remixing Takes A pad.

On the A-side, the first track is “Climate Shift”. A track that tells a story through dubby elements and chords, backed by a powerful and thumping low end. A movement of continuous energy and subtle but noticeable changes which have an impact on the track as a whole can be seen as the precursor for cosmic endeavors.

Next up is “Reach For The Cosmica”, the second track of this release. It’s an epitome of the soundtrack of traveling through space. The minimalist build up tells us about how the journey just started outside of the atmosphere, transitioning into more depth that has been inaugurated by a sound that is the sonic equal of the rocket engine. As the beginning journey develops, there are few sudden bursts of power, together with the presence of the perpetual powers that cause the final move to outer space.

The arrival in outer space brings us to the 3rd part of the release and the first track of the B-side. Setaoc Mass gives the EP it’s the concluding boost that gives us that last drop of power before the arrival. Elements of the original are still to be found, whilst given a little twist and a lot more of dancefloor energy. All while keeping the pace up to enter the final chapter of the journey.

“Take A Pad” exactly asks us what we need to do. Finding the ultimate balance between speed while preserving the right amount of power, is how sub-bass is working in harmony with the percussive elements.

Space is calling upon us with delicate voices. A beautiful ending of a classy and well crafted EP by Qindek.

Slam rework Nitzer Ebb Nitzer Ebb, Silent Breed, DK8, Terrance Fixmer and more for the final instalment of their Archive Edit series

Soma label heads Slam curate a specially designed package of tracks to finalise their Archive Edit project that sees them delve deep into Techno’s past to bring some of the genre’s best tracks into the modern age. The Archive Edit project started as a way for Slam to showcase and share the many different edits that had made their way into their DJ sets over the last few years. The pairing of Stuart McMillan & Orde Meikle have both raided their extensive collections, picking out tracks that have defined countless sets over their career. Tracks from luminaries such as Nitzer Ebb, Thomas P Heckmann (as Silent Breed), Damon Wild & Terrence Fixmer have been re-edited alongside some of Slam’s own unreleased material, showcasing the duo’s current sound; one that constantly naturally evolves, matures and demonstrates why the duo have been at the forefront of the global scene since its inception.

“We resurrect nine cuts from our archive collective collections for your listening and spinning pleasure. Some are original material, some are live re-edits, some are well-known, others are not! They all have one thing in common, they all attempt to unashamedly destroy dancefloors, and thus featured heavily, (usually toward the end of our DJ sets) in the last year or so well known”. Now we share them with you!"

Slam open the album with an absolute monster track in the form of their rework of the legendary Nitzer Ebb’s ‘Join In The Chant’. The anthemic EBM/post-punk infused original is given a thrashing overhaul from the duo marking one of the standout tracks of this collection.  A special live rework of fan favourite ‘Scorpion’ drops before the previously unreleased ‘Memoriam’ delivers on a more emotive tip. Firing back into the edits is Thomas P Heckmann’s seminal ‘Sync In’, under his Silent Breed Moniker which is a fast-paced, Neo-Trance affair Slam then drop the manic ‘1001’ which takes the BPM stratospheric. DK8’s, Murder Was The Bass is up next and given a 2019 update as the duo's edit snatches up all the most perfect elements of the track leading nicely into a rework of French EBM legend Terence Fixmer’s ‘Body Pressure’ - driving through with its twisted beats and vocals. Another special live edit of the first Archive Edit release, Damon Wild’s Rotary makes an appearance as the album closes out with the rave infected, rework of the Hertz classic ‘Recreate’

"Commitment Issues" is three-track EP on @Akelarecs featuring two different versions of an original track by label boss @annikawolfe and a remix by Trovarsi

Commitment Issues (12th Mix) - The "12th Mix" is a sharp and clean, four-on-the-floor groover. It's in limbo between both Techno and Electro. It has elements of Electro with the funky basslined, wavy synths and early Juan Atkins-Cybotron influenced vocals. It also has a very stripped, and straight forward early Detroit techno feel to it.

Commitment Issues (Kickflip Mix) - The "Kickflip Mix" is a broken-beat Electro track that has a lurky, slick feel to it. It is 100% the same exact track as the 12th mix. The only difference is the kick rhythm adds for a nice touch of attitude.

Commitment Issues (Trovarsi Remix) - Trovarsi's interpretation of "Commitment Issues" is a very kittenish Jacking Techno track. The track toys with elements of past and present between the blots of acid, '90s chords/stabs and hip-moving tom grooves.
