already. I want to explore new textures, new sounds. It’s all about improvisation." So runs the creative mantra of Lidvall, an artist whose immersive and pulverising productions stands as among the most innovative in the contemporary techno scene. Hailing from St Petersburg and now living in Spain, Lidvall is one of the artists I had always wished to include in the DYSTOPIA series, owing to the outstanding quality and impressive consistency of his output. In this episode I frame his music with some thoughts on movement in aesthetics before we delve into an interview covering his musical methodology, his increasing embrace of dancefloor oriented productions, as well as some recent controversies he has encountered releasing his music on a very well known techno label. As always, the episode is capped with a 30 minute mix of his finest productions. Hope you all enjoy the episode, meeting Lidvall, and his incredible music.

Danya is a Germany-based DJ, producer, and member of the 6D. collective with residencies at PAL (Hamburg) and Bunker Club (Kiel). Since her debut EP Self Destructive Mechanism (2023), she has released on labels such as Nyxii, Kluster, and Sine Space 7, with her first solo vinyl Sonata (2024) circulating in DJs’ record bags worldwide. She has performed across Europe in clubs such as Tresor (Berlin), Rex Club (Paris), and PAL (Hamburg). Beyond her music, she is engaged in neuroscience research, working at the crossroads of sound, perception, and the brain.

INTERVIEW
How do you balance your identity as a researcher and your identity as an artist — do they blend, or do you keep them separate worlds?

They definitely blend. My work in neuroscience constantly shapes how I think about sound, rhythm, and perception, and I can’t really separate that from what I do as an artist. I am now building a project where these worlds meet more explicitly. My vision is a platform or environment where neuroscience and sound art directly inform each other. That intersection is what excites me the most.

If someone listened to one of your sets or tracks with no context, what would you want them to feel or understand about you?

I’d want them to feel like there’s thought behind every sound, even if they don’t know the story. I try to make tracks that move and evolve, so that people can get lost in them. Even without context, it’s important to me that the music communicates some energy and emotion. I’d like people to sense curiosity and exploration. And ideally, to leave them a little inspired or reflective.

What do you wish the techno scene would talk about more openly?

I think we need to have a more honest conversation about the culture itself. The very culture that claims to empower us is still built on dynamics that endanger us. Harassment and abuse are still happening behind the scenes, and a lot of it gets quietly ignored. It’s time to question the framework we’ve accepted. I’d love to see us reset a little, put the community and the values back at the center, and open the door to more diverse and respectful voices.

South African artist Deano grew up immersed in his local music scene, shaping a diverse sound that moves between house and techno. Beyond producing solo EPs on labels like Hardgroove, Symbolism, AWRY and Sungate, he runs the label and events platform Knowledge Imprint, known for pushing forward both emerging talents and respected veterans.

Deano is a resident at Cape Town’s Mødular Club and a regular at Johannesburg’s TOY TOY. Known for a versatile selection spanning house to techno, he’s played across South Africa’s leading festivals and taken his sound to clubs in Berlin, Tokyo, Lisbon and beyond.

The latest release from the enigmatic artist Skind, titled "Motion," establishes its uncompromising techno signature. Gigantic grooves, so weighty they feel as though they could shift tectonic plates, lay the foundation. These are not your standard four-on-the-floor beats. Instead, Skind weaves complex, interlocking patterns that click and whir with the beautiful precision of a master watchmaker. The bass, a monstrous and ever-present force, acts as the gravitational center, pulling the listener deeper into the album's hypnotic pulse.

The entire release is a testament to the power of mathematical calculation in music. Each percussive hit, every synth stab, feels deliberately placed, a cog in a vast and intricate machine.
