This is the recording of my DJ set at Berghain on sunday morning 6th of February 2011, between 8 and 12am. Raserei is back with the first podcast in 2022 with SYXT and Glukkon Records co-founder Ketch! Swiss DJ and producer based in Berlin, Chlär is an artist emphasizing groove through blending tribal, vintage style club music with a modern touch. Using 3 or 4 decks in the booth, his high energy mixes combine rhythm-heavy tracks with his own production loops, ensuring the orginality of his work. 

Wearing many hats in his scene, Chlär has worked with leading labels such as Mutual Rytm, Taapion, RAW or Lobster Theremin and co-runs label Bipolar Disorder Rec. 

Not only an artist and sound engineer but also a professional of A&R and events management, Chlär has won the ‘’Raver’s Choice’’ award from the 2021 Raving Spoon Awards, rewarding leading figures of the scene.

For this Livestream we chose the Documentary Koyaanisqatsi as Background; The title is a Hopi Indian word meaning “life out of balance.” Created between 1975 and 1982, the film is an apocalyptic vision of the collision of two different worlds — urban life and technology versus the environment.

Global Vibe Radio 394 Feat. Carla Schmitt

Berlin label and collective Live From Earth crew does things its own way. And it works. Over the past ten years, the team has become a major force in the city, mixing a killer ear for techno and house with a sense of humour and pop sensibility that has proven irresistible to audiences and scenes around the world. That's why we chose Live From Earth for our latest cover story: its DIY attitude, humble origins and tenacious spirit are everything we love about underground dance music.

Accompanying the cover story, this RA Podcast features a recording of a live back-to-back between two of the label's chief artists, DJ Gigola and MCR-T (the latter of whom has produced some of Live From Earth's biggest hits, including horsegiirL's "My Barn My Rules"). The hour-plus recording makes for a handy microcosm of the label's sound, rushing through contemporary and vintage techno with plenty of raunchy vocal samples and hip-hop a capellas. It's blazing but never too hard, catchy but never predictable. Above all, it's fun—the group's guiding principle.

Sam Coates took to techno like a diligent pupil, falling in love with the genre through labels like CLR in the late '00s. It didn't take long for the student to surpass his proverbial teachers. Almost immediately, the Manchester native was putting out pitch-perfect, functional techno records with everything intricately balanced. The requisite move to Berlin only sealed his fate as a future techno luminary, and by now, based in Kyiv, he's one of techno's most reliable, yet exciting, workhorses. Setaoc Mass records (and those on his label, SK_eleven) are minimalist but colossal, deceptively simple but not easy to pull off. 

We've praised him in these pages for his "sense of economy—how to get the hardest impact out of just a few elements," and that's the idea behind his RA Podcast as well. Put together from records old and new, and intricately layered, Coates's mix is like a time-travelling wormhole connecting disparate eras from techno, and highlighting the genre's most timeless attributes: mechanistic rhythms, careful pacing, rudimentary melodies made out of the strangest sounds and, of course, the power of the bass drop. It's hard to imagine anything that sounds more capital-T techno than this mix, which is a high compliment. It's easy to hear why his records and DJ sets are only more in demand from techno heads across the geographical and generational spectrum.

Amsterdam based DJ MARRØN’s name comes from the enslaved Marrons, who centuries ago, cast off their chains and went to live in the forests of Suriname. Inspired by Afro Deep and a number of great names in the history of Motor City beats, as well as more recent incarnations on the other side of the Atlantic, MARRØN’s sound is aptly liberating and reasserts the foundational link between african rhythms and techno. It’s a hypnotising onslaught of beats with which to lose yourself for a few hours in a sweaty basement. Though it was during the pandemic, under a different format, that his podcast series took off full tilt and gave him the platform to play the former. Nowadays his purist sets have their home at Sunday jaunt Eerste Communie, a community building mission and event series he started with a group of friends, with extra bookings all over the map. Key to his sets is something he describes as ‘constant energy flow’, a kind of forward-pitched rhythmic momentum that keeps him and his attendant crowds going. Simple but powerful and expertly devised, overlapping rhythms delivered in high definition and a mile a minute. Bassiani Podcast 212 is 69 minutes of meticulously crafted textures and seductively layered beats from this decidedly gifted mainstay of the Amsterdam scene.

Du bist Co-Founder und Resident des Kollektivs Syntop, wodurch zeichnet es sich aus?

Wir sind ein Kollektiv aus Freunden, welches sich vor 7 Jahren gegründet hat. Angefangen mit Open Airs in Potsdam, haben wir über die Jahre in verschiedensten Berliner Clubs Partys veranstaltet, Charity Kampagnen organisiert und kuratieren nebenbei eine Podcast Reihe, bei der wir versuchen verschiedenste Genres elektronischer Musik zu bedienen. 
Aktuell bin ich für das Booking und unsere Podcast Reihe verantwortlich, was mir sehr viel Spaß bereitet, da ich dadurch Künstler*innen, die ich mag persönlich kennenlernen und supporten kann.

Deine Tracks werden von vielen und großen Artists gespielt. Was denkst du, schätzen die sie besonders an deiner Musik?

Oft kriege ich das Feedback, dass meine Tracks sehr minimalistisch sind aber dennoch total divers und interessant durch verschiedenste FX Elemente, Noises und atmosphärische Sounds. Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass meine Tracks für die Artists oftmals eine kleine Abwechslung bzw. Auflockerung in ihrem Set bewirken.

Gibt es noch unentdeckte Genres oder Stile, die du ausprobieren möchtest?

Tatsächlich habe ich das Gefühl, dass sich mein Techno Musikgeschmack regelmäßig ändert. Mal deep und atmosphärisch, mal reich an Texturen, mal simpler und mal ein wenig schneller und “härter“. Oft spiele ich in meinen Sets auch 1-2 breakige Tracks, um ein wenig aufzulockern.

Rill is a Berlin-based DJ, producer, and co-head of the label Syntop. With multiple releases, including a recent track for Rødhåd’s Fabric compilation, he consistently demonstrates his production talent. His sound is timeless techno, enriched with creative sound design and inspired by early 2010s techno. Rill’s track selection combines atmospheric, percussive, and groovy elements, while his precise use of synths and FX creates a hypnotic, immersive experience.

INTERVIEW
You are a co-founder and resident of the Syntop collective. What distinguishes it?

We are a collective of friends that was founded seven years ago. Starting with open-air events in Potsdam, we have organized parties in various clubs in Berlin over the years, organized charity campaigns, and in the meantime, we curate a podcast series where we try to cover a variety of genres of electronic music. Currently, I am responsible for booking and our podcast series, which I really enjoy because it allows me to personally meet and support artists I like.

Your tracks are played by many and big artists. What do you think they particularly appreciate about your music?

I often receive feedback that my tracks are very minimalist but still totally diverse and interesting due to various FX elements, noises, and atmospheric sounds. I can imagine that my tracks often provide a little variety or lightness in the artists' sets.

Are there any undiscovered genres or styles that you would like to try? 

Actually, I feel that my taste in techno music changes regularly. Sometimes it's deep and atmospheric, sometimes rich in textures, sometimes simpler, and at other times a bit faster and "harder." I often include 1-2 breaky tracks in my sets to add a bit of variety.

This week we are joined by Raymond V. The Italian artist's relationship with techno began in her childhood, influenced by her father's taste in 80s electronic rock. The synths that naturally accompanied it still remain rooted in her sound today. Her interest grew exponentially once she made her way into clubs at 15, falling in love with the straight kicks of the genre. It is this early start which helps explain the maturity and commanding energy of the music she now plays.

Taking inspiration from German techno of the early 2000s whilst adding her own twist, Raymond V lulls listeners into a deep sense of cathartic hypnosis, frequently engulfing the dance floor in storms of ambient-industrial, yet driving them through this with warm, refined grooves.

Mapping the confines of deep, hard-to-the-bone techno through damp and dim-lit corridors of sound, the Eerste Communie co-founder serves up two hours of proper clinical hammering and nonstop rhythmic assault, paced to get your heart rolling over from one end of your chest to the other like a pinball caught in a magnetic storm.

Chief operator of 2007-established techno flagship Token, Ghent-based DJ, producer and label owner Kr!z has become a crucial driving force in the ever-challenging world of club-dedicated wares over the past decade. Having pushed key material from the cream-of-the-crop of today’s 4x4 exponents including Inigo Kennedy, Ø [Phase], Luke Slater, Marcel Dettmann, Blawan, Surgeon and many more, the many-sided Belgian groove manipulator recently began his journey as a sound-maker, releasing his debut solo EP ‘Mantra’ in 2019, followed by ’Scorpion’s Tail’ earlier this year. True to his high standards of selection and mixing, Kr!z’s two-hour round treats us to a darkling maelstrom of cutting-edge electronics, incisive drum progs and mind-boggling machine-funk stunts; packed with enough NRG to bring the laziest of crowds to an unfaltering simmer.
