It’s understandable that many artists in techno today, once they reach a certain level of recognition and appreciation, choose to rest on their past glories. In the relatively short time that techno and house have rede ned the underground musical landscape, it’s often the case that the creative sweet spot barely outlasts the  rst few releases. Not so Abe Duque, whose service to the cause of quality underground techno now spans three decades. 20 years after his first release, this latest long player on his own Abe Duque Recordings typifies his refreshing approach to finely crafted, darkly humorous and forward-thinking dance music.

'Rules For The Modern DJ' brings more than an hour of advanced machine funk over 10 blissfully charged tracks – proving that the man who once described himself as one of the “few producers still licensed to use the 303", remains in total control of his weapon of choice.

Duque, real name Carlos Abraham Duque Alcivar, remains a vital presence in the techno scene, intimately linked with the development of the genre via his hometown New York. Duque was an integral part of NYC’s now legendary Limelight Club – a space immortalized since its closing by the rapturous memories of its performers and clubbers alike. Duque co-ran the Abuse Industries night – a seminal series of events that helped germinate techno in the Big Apple in the 90s and provided the launch pad for Abe’s career as a celebrated techno artist, live performer, remixer and label boss. High profile projects with the likes of Pet Shop Boys and the Chemical Brothers pricked the consciousness of the mainstream to his talents, but to underline his ambivalence to this kind of success, he also released his landmark “So Underground it Hurts” LP around the same time.

'With Rules For the Modern DJ', Duque seems to have returned to the dark tinged, driving techno of his early releases. Lead track 'Chaos Rules' sets out his game plan perfectly – the vaguely tongue-in-cheek and demonic vocals hark back to the 90s while his mastery of the tools of techno are tightly wound in to a fierce groove. The whole album is a taut, tightly wound journey – balancing Duque’s love of old school rave elements, raw 303 squelches, exceptional sound design and quirky, sometimes demented vocal samples. The  firing 'Diabeto' ends with the sounds of a man seemingly gnawing on his own face, 'With His Music' sounds like a rapturous sermon taking place at the high temple of techno. Housier moments also creep in –'I Am New York' and 'L.O.V.E.' could both show a healthy disregard for traditional genre boundaries, and could easily fit into deep house sets by more adventurous DJs. Electro elements also infuse the general feel, while closing track 'Bliss' references Duque’s previous ambient leanings as a part of the Ranch Relaxo Allstars.

Ultimately, Rules for the Modern DJ sums up the oeuvre of Abe Duque in one highly accomplished package. At once musical, melodic, muscular, enigmatic, surprising and funny – electronic music continues to owe a huge debt to Abe Duque.

Title track "I'm Yours" is cradled with the seductive vocals of Amy Capilari. Pressing and pushing as the track drives on, MPathy weaves teasing percussion and haunting atmospheric synth work through a bouncing bassline. Rich with emotion and steeped with provocativeness, makes for a serene groove that does not fall short of hypnotising.

Fellow labelman Soul Button has his way with one of two remixes featured on the EP. A surging beat is tamed by gentle piano chords that fall gracefully upon a strong bassline.

After the positive reactions on "Diablo", Oliver and I naturally decided to dive into a follow-up (with a rather appropriate title)! Not sure why we chose Spanish names but we seemed to be onto a good thing so we decided to keep nurturing those creative instincts. We had quite a few ideas going back and forth with this one, hence the two-part approach to the final version. Conceptually and with the working title, we wanted to take a lighter approach to this one, creating something less sinister than "Diablo" and I think that we succeeded nicely, helping to eventually take things into our "Elements" series.
