Byron Adams: Variationes alchemisticae for flute, viola, violoncello and piano

Of these variations, the composer writes: “To this score, I have affixed a quotation from The Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus, an enigmatic alchemical text: Et sicut omnes res fuerunt ab uno, meditatione unius: sic omnes res natae fuerunt ab hac una re, adaptatione (‘And as all things proceeded from one, through the mediation of the one, so all things came from this one thing, through adaptation’). Often derided as charlatans, most alchemists sought after the gold of spiritual truth through an elaborate system of symbolism activated by transforming primal matter (prima materia) through a series of experiments (operatio). If successful, this process could effect a reconciliation of the opposites: water and fire, earth and air. Such reconciliation was achieved through suffering, the dismemberment (mortificatio) of the primal matter. My score, a set of ‘alchemical variations,’ is thus filled with formal and numerological symbolism. (The listener needs to know nothing of such arcane matters to apprehend this music fully.) Variationes alchemisticae was commissioned by Chamber Music Palisades, was premiered by them in 2005, and was dedicated to the late Conrad Susa as a gift for his seventieth birthday.”

Abraham Fabella is a composer, pianist, organist and conductor living and working in Southern California. 
 
Mr. Fabella has garnered favorable attention for both his compositions and piano performances. His music has been included on the inaugural BluePrint New Music Series in San Francisco, the 15-Minutes of Fame Contemporary Concert Series by Vox Novus in New York, and on several shows heard on KZSU 90.1 FM in Stanford, CA.  His music has been performed by the Schola Cantorum San Francisco, the UCR Orchestra and Chamber Singers, the SFCM New Music Ensemble, and several chamber ensembles, choirs, and soloists throughout California.  His music is published by Yelton Rhodes and can be heard on the Andumandum label.

Mr. Fabella lives in the city of Moreno Valley.
