 The 15th annual Opulent Temple white party was hosted by Carl Cox and crew during the debut of the incredible new stage for Playground 2017 - Arrival. Featuring an arena with flying saucer flamethrowers, lasers, lights and an incredible JBL sound system. 

I was sure to thank Carl for his awe inspiring gift before he handed over the controls to this stand-out peak experience I won't soon forget.  

There were lasers beams, fire poofs and the familiar orange glow of faces at all the drops. I felt right at home.

The set features tunes by Drezo, Andruss, NuKid and others. Full of tension, futuristic robot voices and references to outer space.

Since releasing his debut album Illuminate in the summer of 2014, Buckinghamshire-born and Brighton-based producer Alex Banks has progressed from being an in-demand remixer and Solid Steel ‘Mix of the Year’-winning DJ to that and so much more today. From touring Europe with Moderat to DJing in Tokyo for Red Bull Music Academy’s EMAF, via countless live performances at continental festivals including Germany’s legendary Melt, he’s raised his own bar, his own way. And what comes now and next is just as forward thinking as the material he’s put out previously, unbounded by electronic music’s typically rigid genre barriers and capable of connecting with an audience on a cerebral as well as a physical level.

A key word is emotion: Alex’s music has it to spare. That was evident back when his remix of Bonobo’s ‘The Keeper’ crept out in early 2012, slow-rising to public recognition as the outstanding reworking of material featured on Simon Green’s acclaimed Black Sands LP. With the best part of two million plays across SoundCloud and YouTube alone, attracting SoundCloud user comments like “a true masterpiece”, the track’s popularity, beside fine receptions for further remixes for the likes of Andreya Triana and Husky Rescue, formed a fine foundation from which Alex could further develop his own original material, forever retaining a grip on his audience’s hearts as he moves their bodies.

It’s a good time for Alex Banks, the one-time metal fan whose life changed with his first teenage rave – to be him, to hear him, to work beside him. Whether remixing, collaborating or operating alone, his unique mark is consistently evident in music bearing the Alex Banks brand, rapidly becoming a seal of warm approval in stark contrast to so much sterile dance fare made with machine-like precision. Just as Illuminate made you move inside and out, so Alex’s next chapter is sure to be full of heart-swelling builds and a very organic sense of euphoria. You can go ahead and mark it as essential, already.

With “the blackbook translations” series, Solar Moon showcases their ongoing love for dub versions & remix work - highlighting the essence of their latest album “Blackbook” by letting talented friends in high places take another fresh perspective on its original chapters. Open mind for a different view.

Budapest based chillwave superheroes GELKA (who just compiled & mixed the most recent CAFE DEL MAR compilation) teamed up with fellow hungarian producer FORTEBA for a sensationally smooth reinterpretation of Solar Moon’s “The way we fall” featuring Washington based love poet JEN… sounding like the perfect soundtrack to a magic sunday morning ice skate excursion on frozen lake Balaton of sorts.  

MASSIVAN, renown DJ/producer from Ibiza’s neighboring island Formentera (and acclaimed regular contributor to compilations like HOTEL COSTES), takes the downtempo bubble funk of the original “dibidibi” (featuring the uniquely treated vocals of Abiodun aka Don Abi) on a sailing trip through the more balearic part of the mediterranean sea on a bright, clear & warm summerday.

Meanwhile, Germany’s most authentic and experienced dub/reggae masterproducer DUBVISIONIST transcends the rather fragile original vibe of “the way we fall” into minimalistic roots drenched outer space, adding a massive amount of atmospheric subfrequencies… plus those mesmerizing dubs & delays of course.

With the additional bonus of  the mystic “Rishikesh Hop”, (a carefully edited, exclusive preview pointing towards the next SOLAR MOON longplayer “redbook” by the way), “the Blackbook translations” first chapter is a rather good read all by itself indeed. More where this came from? Soon!
