Paul Vivian is a UK-based artist with a background in Fine Art from Norwich School of Art and Design and Chelsea College of Art and Design. His research explores themes of object animism, trace, and resonance, with a current focus on Neolithic stone circle structures. Utilising Archaeoacoustics, Vivian conducts fieldwork across UK archaeological sites, creating unique recordings directly from ancient stones to capture their internal audio resonance—an innovative approach to Neolithic sites that has yet to be widely explored. These sonorous recordings form the foundation of Vivian’s recent film work, which delves into the character and presence of specific Neolithic sites. His findings and methodologies have been presented at recent academic events, including symposiums and conferences at Tate Liverpool (2023), Manchester Metropolitan University (2024), and the University for the Creative Arts (2024). Recent exhibitions of Vivian’s work include Ventriloquism – The Lost Voice Spoken by Others at The Whitaker Museum, Sensual Fields as part of the Bath Arts Festival, and the Manchester Contemporary Art Fair.

And as a field recordist - working independently of a film crew - I’ve captured the subtle sounds of the natural world from a kayak, a manhood dance in Ethiopia and the action-packed soundscapes of China.

Spaced-out analogue synth hooks; motorik drum pops; layered waves of guitar, bass and drums; vocals ghosting in-and-out of the machine; zerOset blend decades of influences, as a modern nod to Harmonia, Cluster, and Kraftwerk.

Ten crafted tracks leave melodies to loop, for the trio to bury heads in the delicate focus of rhythm and timbre. Opening with the effortless motor of Complicity, a white knuckle drive through layers of sniping laser-synth, tunnel visions until the drums just roll over and die in a warm mist of electric hiss, paving the way for what follows... a textured, deep blend of inspired rhythmic electronica.

And, just when you think you’ve got it, they slip into the cool, exhilarating, exploratory washes of trance-inducing, tribal rhythms (St Cloud & Near Unison), pushed to the nth by comrade Tim Holmes (Death in Vegas), lending hands and ears to his thunderous, brooding mix of The Drift, soothed by the entirely unforeseen... a calypso sea of tranquillity that is The Memory Case. And, repeat.

After endless improv sets; three days- and-nights with as much equipment as they could rack into a live room... followed by 10 months of structuring, shaping, broken hard-drives, restructuring, and reshaping; this is Polarise, the debut record by zerOset.
