Description:
A quick off the spur improvisation using a sub-set of the Aliquot 24 scale as per Miko Sloper [1], performed on my custom digital synthesiser, the CrossFeedFM and on the hardware synthesiser Enner by Soma Laboratory.

The frequency ratios used for this piece are (dialled into the CrossFeedFM):
1/1 24/23 6/5/4/3 3/2 8/5 24/13 2/1

The title of the piece and the art work, "Hats and Beards" is in honour of the person that inspired me to write it, Miko Sloper.


A brief tour of derivation and origins of this tuning follows.

The Aliquot 24 here is simply the undertone harmonic series of the following frequency ratios (Just Intonation (JI)):
24/24 24/23 24/22 ... 24/12
here terminating at the octave (2/1) ratio.

Also note that for a string subjected to a uniform tension, it's fundamental frequency, f [Hz] is inversely proportional to it's length L [m]. (Ref. [2] equ. 9 Table 36 p. 716) and here is where the aliquot comes in, the string is subdivided evenly into 24 parts, aliquot meaning to divide into equal parts.

This is not to be confused with the aliquot sequence [4] derived from the iterated application of the aliquot sum [3]. I will leave deriving musical scales from aliquot sequences to another day.

So back to Miko Sloper's sub-set of the aliquot 24, the frequency ratios he found to be pleasing and when extended to include the root (1/1) and octave (2/1) were:

when mapped back to the nearest 12EDO notes gives the third mode of the major scale, the Phrygian scale.

So put another way, the aliquot 24 sub-set scale here is the JI equivalent of the Phrygian scale.

Another variant of the scale was proposed by Miko, replacing the 24/23 ratio with 12/11 ratio. I did try both and with all the synthesiser adjustments I made, I am not sure which one I settled with. Looking back at it, both sound nice and have their special charm. So, let's just leave it as an ambiguity. An ephemeral improvisation and I am OK with that.

The parts played on the Enner are not necessarily true to the above scale, but rather an improvised tuning, since the Enner is strictly tuned by ear and I typically do not use static tunings on this instrument, but rather vary it during the performance.

The performance was recorded DAWless on the CrossFeedFM eight track digital recorder.
