Over the last 2 years I have been subject to several stages of totally colossal life changes. It has been hard to focus on music, even though I have continued digging and love it as ever. Music has been my lifeblood and given me a sense of meaning since I was a kid. A platform upon which I had a sense of purpose to exist. I started to DJ after my dad died when I was really young (1997). I had already been into it but after this event, collecting and playing records became a crutch, a coping mechanism. It got me through, it was a colourful, intellectually benign yet absorbing way to distract myself from the pain of existence.

One thing I have noticed is that even though privately I have always been deeply obsessed with music, my expression with it publicly has been inconsistent, stuttering based upon how I felt at any given time, allowing life events to eclipse music and stopping me from getting my ideas out there. Also, I allowed various things to block my outlet... "it's not the right style" / "it's too different to all my other mixes" / "it's not a proper underground selection" etc. BULLSHIT!

I have come to a point where I feel settled and ready to commit to a new regular series. I created a variety of DJ mix series in the past: Cement Mix, the ongoing Avenue Red Podcast among others. This one I intend to become my regular heartbeat for reflective, thoughtful, personal expressions with any kind of music.

Labelled in respect of the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (a nod to existentialism, his teachings), it is all about accepting that we are not here for a long time, we are here for a GOOD TIME! It is all about not letting ego, fear regarding acceptance or some creative apathy block access to expressing ones true self in its truest form. Unless our musical expressions are unleashed, released from our minds and committed to the physical world somehow, all of our crazy, precious and unique ideas are gone forever. Blown away and scattered with the sands of time. Once we die, there is no time left, no chance to express anything further and the universe can never know what potentially amazing things were locked up in our minds. This also represents a loss of cultural progress, as discoveries we have personally made are not being documented for posterity. This new Nietzsche Lessons series is a special zone for total freedom of musical expression.

This quirky EP quickly put her on the map as a producer to keep an eye on. CHIDA has been a pioneer of the Tokyo underground house music scene from early 90s. Influential DJs playing around the world, he is also a very respected producer and run the label Ene Records since 2009. 
 
 Revered after more than 20 years as one of the most respected DJs in Tokyo, Chida is front and centre in the exciting new wave of House and Techno DJs who are now finding fame around the world.
 
 Learning his craft playing alongside legends like Masters at Work, and at Strictly Rhythm and Nuyorican Soul Label Parties, Chida is famed in his home country for his marathon sets which have been known to last well in excess of 12 hours.

 Since 2009 Chida has been running his label “Ene”, one of the most respected underground imprints amongst true house music aficionados, boasting a list of contributors including Prins Thomas, Eddie C, Man Power, Tiago, Lord of The Isles and homegrown Japanese talent such as The Backwoods, Cos Mes, and Sly Mongoose.
  
 Finally, after so much anticipation following his much sought after debut 12”, Danca, on ESP Institute, Chida is finally about to release more music, with originals and remixes due on both his own label, and several others in 2016.
 
 Respected and even, on occasion, name-dropped by such amazing DJs as Eric “Dr Dunks” Duncan, The Idjut Boys, Lindstrom, Mak E, Justin Vandervolgan, Andrew Weatherall , Soft Rocks, Discodromo and a whole load more, Chida is truly a DJ’s DJ.

 In this modern time where music production all too often takes precedence over true DJing craftsmanship, Chida remains that rarest of phenomena, a performer who has managed to carve out a global DJIng schedule purely from the merits of his sheer skill behind the decks.

Top class gentleman, DJ and Distant Worlds label owner from South London - Paul Rimbaud - has joined the philosophical ride, enticing us into his inner sanctum with an expressive mix of 90's vibes rave & breaks action. The "matchball" he refers to below is to get a mix onto my new Nietzsche Lessons series, Avenue Red and Avenue Red 1210 - the only man in the known universe to do so, so far. And he's smashed this one 5-0. Invisible mixing, totally seamless. Get your raving boots on. Reach for the lasers. Safe as fuck!

Paul Rimbaud wrote: "God is dead" spoke Nietzsche but somewhat negated the power of the declaration when he went and died himself, thus allowing God to declare "Nietzsche is dead". At least he would have if Nietzsche hadn't already done him dirty. Anyways turns out that the only positive maxim we can lay our faith in these days regards the late 20th century assertion that "hardcore will never die". Accordingly I've engaged in a Hegelian dialectic on the hardcore continuum in an effort to reach some degree of polyrhythmic synthesis; old stuff, new stuff, all sharing a common denominator - the breakbeat. 

To be quite honest, being a miserable sod, I always related more to Schopenhauer personally but I think we can all at least agree that there has never been a party that hasn't been livened up by debating long-dead German existentialists. In a direct affront to nihilism I am proud to collect the Pritchard match ball with this mix so may I implore all the listeners to let inspiration be your ecstasy and ecstasy, your inspiration.

To start things off, we have who is, one of the most understated and respected artists in our scene, Rhadoo, to provide us with a recording of his fabric set when the club turned 19 years old last October. A lot could be written and said about this artist who is so outstanding, unique and historically relevant to minimalism, however, in order to be in line with his identity and his understatement we will let the music speak for itself. 

We would like to thank fabric for granting us this recording and wish them a great night this Saturday as they have their annual RPR Soundsystem gathering. 

Back here in Bucharest, we will be celebrating with a stellar line up including Charlie, Christopher Ledger, Inner, Junki Inoue, Kozo, Praslea and Vera.

Perhaps one of the most fundamental and integral elements to this musical scene within which we operate is the ability to be able to support friends and push creative expression forwards in a meanigful manner. Big or small, if you can play a tune, then we'd like to listen. 

Macca is a friend of the website and has been actively involved in electronic music for many years having run and promoted parties up north for a long time. As a disc jockey he is unassuming and kind hearted, keen to showcase the eclectic nature of his own collection whilst ensuring that a happy go lucky ideology can go a long way. 

This mix was recorded after hours in East London at the locally renowned Behind This Wall venue, a low key affair with a tasteful soundsystem and big soul.

The explosion of music sampling in the ’80s informed his processes and, influenced by the elder producers in his orbit, he began his own experiments using an Ensoniq EPS-1, one of the first few affordable samplers on the market. He released his debut EP, No More Heros, in 2002 via his own More Music NY. Levon also founded the label Novel Sound. 

Eric Maltz

Eric Maltz is an electronic music producer from New York City, now based in Berlin. A multi-instrumentalist with a degree in Studio Composition, Eric Maltz was raised a trained pianist, now turned synthesist. With an ear for the improvised and experimental, he runs the label Flower Myth, a platform where he curates and produces the muzine Acoustic Jaguar.

Eric has releases on Possible Futures, Midnight Themes, Novel Sound, and Flower Myth, and has brought his live performance to Berlin Atonal, Tresor, and Cashmere Radio.

Music collector, DJ and occasional artist/producer. DJ'ing since 1997, I play a wide range of music that is mainly focused on the deeper/dubbier shades of house, techno & electro. I also love all kinds of eclectic stuff including disco, boogie, Italo, synth pop, nu jazz, jazzdance, lounge, trip-hop, downtempo, dub, reggae, jungle, liquid drum & bass, IDM, electronica, Warp, Ninja Tune etc.

In summer 2013 I set up the Avenue Red (@avenue-red) imprint to push quality material from a wide plethora of DJs and artists who I have particular respect for in terms of their musical output, artistry and dedication to the cause.
