I have done hundreds of edit’s, remixes, mixed tapes and quite a lot of originals over the years. Will try and get a lot of it up on this site.
Started DJ’ing in the early 80’s during the New Wave era, was more of a fan of electronic music and a mad collector of the 12” single. Did cut my teeth playing disco and funk at older age venues. Started pushing house music with a lot of resistance from club’s etc., just after the mid 80’s, had all the original labels, Trax, DJ international etc… I did have my way; around 87’ it all really took off and I had around five unbelievably amazing years playing in huge clubs. I was very generous with my time; I trained and started off a lot of DJ’s.
Got fed up with the whole DJ thing in the early 90’s, the scene really changed from the club environment that I was quite comfortable in. The drug’s took over, rave, grunge and indie music (you had to become genre’ specific), scary personalities and any young pup could grab a handful of CD’s give them selves a funny name and become an instant DJ.
I sold a lot of my equipment to buy a very expensive Apple Mac that could do 4 tracks of audio and trigger external midi gear so I could make my own remixes. Started doing stuff for ACE remixes in Melbourne and Hotracks in the US.
I started doing a bit of editing for studios, dancers, anyone that needed something chopped up and built up this reputation of being this ‘computer guy’, this was at a time when the belief was ‘there would never be a place for computers in the recording studio’. As we know now that is not the case.
Not being a musician made life hard for me initially and I was treated with a lot of contempt buy most ‘Musicians’. So I bought a cheap guitar, a friend taught me to play a few simple songs, so I started to collect synths and studio gear. Even though now I just use a computer, midi keyboard and the old NS10’s.
Ironically after doing all this production and stuff, I seem to like writing really simple pop songs on the guitar. But if I had just starting playing guitar at an early age, I wouldn’t have heard all this music and may have given up like 99.9% of musicians do. At heart I'm still a DJ, even though I haven't seriously done it for over twenty years.
