Sands of time is a collaborative sound work with Zi Xiao Gong during the art writing workshop led by Dr David Mollin at the London College of Communication.

This collaboration had to get us involved in the use of writing and sound as a process of materialisation of an artwork that fails to materialise, living perpetually within discourse production. 

Sands of time is the junction point between two existing artworks, the Longplayer by Jem Finer and Cymactics by Nigel Stanford. This sonic assemblage proposes an enhanced listening of the deep time where the sound seems to become tangible for the eyes.

One morning, I opened my email box. A student from my school in France wrote to us during the night. She mentioned her nocturnal questionings during the lockdown. She shared her emotions, her doubts, her fears, her abundant thoughts during this isolation time. She was talking about how it feels to fly even though no human has ever experienced it. That same night, another student answered her and then another one ... 
That Saturday morning, I opened my mailbox and read their words. I really liked what they shared with us. That's why I asked them to record their voices in order to compose with it. Linked to their lyrics, I had imagined an atmosphere. So I went to capture sounds representing this universe I had in mind. Capture of birdsong at nightfall, dry leaves brushed away with my hands, a little waterfall, a stream, a roar of the city in the distance, a threatening crow, a woodpecker hitting the trunk of a tree ... Then to bind all these elements, I used a modular synthesizer. With it, I tried to create sounds that could compose a sound layer, screeching, distant crackling sometimes adding reverb ... I then sorted, cleaned, organized the collected sounds and the lyrics to achieve to this composition. I wished their words could fly away.

The Brvtalist is proud to present a new mix from Peter Kirn. The work of Berlin-based electronic musician, media artist, and writer spans multiple genres and mediums. He has released on Detroit Underground, Wunderblock Records, Instruments of Discipline, Kotä Records, and his own Establishment, among others as well as scored concert music to work with modern dance and techno. He has built and writes daily at CDM (cdm.link) and is co-creator of the MeeBlip hardware synthesizer line. He has also worked on building collaborative laboratories for performance and technological exploration, including co-facilitating AI Art Labs for MUTEK/MUTEK.JP and GAMMA with curator Natalia Fuchs (ARTYPICAL), and has directed the MusicMakers Hacklab with CTM Festival since its first edition in 2013.

Look out for an upcoming release on Femanyst's Dark Carousel label and a dark ambient LP for Industrial Complexx. He also recently started a residency for Shanghai Community Radio (SHCR), plus a new collaboration with singer-producer Pari San. While his work had tended to international projects, he's managed to keep threads moving through pandemic interruptions, including work with MUTEK, Patch.XR and their VR patchathon, and co-curating EMA Expo 2021 with Kotä Moscow and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA).

We are thrilled to have him contribute to our series with this powerful set that is perfect for the moment.

Ce qui passe par la Terre, 2024, Aurélien Caillaux et Benoit Bories, coproduction Reconnexions Département de l’Aude / RTBF La Première / Les Voix de Traverse / Faïdos Sonore, versions 14.2 pour la performance live et stéréo pour la diffusion radiophonique et podcast.

Ce qui passe par la Terre sera présentée la première fois le 21 septembre au coucher du soleil dans le village de Villerouge-Termenes, un des lieux central de la narration. La création sera jouée comme un concert, le public installé dans un champ face au massif de montagnes jouxtant Villerouge-Termenes. La création sonore sera diffusée sur un dispositif spatialisé de quatorze haut-parleurs entourant le public.



Avoir un rendez-vous quotidien avec un étourneau grand imitateur de sons d’activités du village, attendre impatiemment l’arrivée des chants des rossignols, s’étonner encore et encore des variations des chants du merle, observer une plante au-delà de la catégorie mal nommée « mauvaises herbes », entretenir le mythe de coins à champignons qui sont à peu près dans cette direction, vivre l’excitation de l’apparition d’une mouche nécrophage disparue des radars depuis longtemps, lire le paysage pour comprendre l’histoire des pratiques paysannes, travailler la terre mais pas que car il faut savoir prendre le temps et faire collectif, prendre le temps d’écouter les anciens pour faire ensemble, saisir ces occasions pour faire la fête, expérimenter de nouvelles pratiques paysannes basées aussi sur un savoir-faire ancien, écouter les traits de caractère de ses compagnons d’élevage, veiller à être délicat avec des endroits fragiles, passer le mot à celles et ceux à qui l’on fait découvrir la magie de ces fameux lieux, s’amuser comme un gosse à se laisser entraîner par les rythmes des machines à embouteiller, patouiller la terre pour colorer sa maison d’enduits, débusquer la genette en guettant patiemment les rythmes de la faune autour d’un point d’eau.

La liste est loin d’être exhaustive de tous les gestes, savoir-faire que nous avons enregistrés en suivant sur quatre saisons des habitant.es, paysann.es des Hautes-Corbières. Ce qui passe par la Terre est le récit sonore documentaire et musical fait des sonorités au quotidien de ce lien au pays transmis entre différentes personnes.

I have been making purely percussive tracks recently for my upcoming album, so for this track I wanted to have an emotive melodic element as well. Vent is composed for a multichannel speaker configuration in the shape of a dome. This upload is a binaural stereo reduction best to listen to on headphones. The piece has been made mostly using MaxMsp and Reaper in conjunction with the 3D spatialization tool SpatGris.
