In early 1986, The Mentor wrote The Conscience of a Hacker, which has become known as The Hacker Manifesto. When I came across it as a teenager a couple of years later, it seemed to express all of my own thoughts around coding, hacking and the ignorant, non-believer adults around me. 

This album is dedicated to The Manifesto and The Mentor, who is featured with his blessing on the closing track. You'll also find the only vocalist in the world who is qualified to rap about all aspects of hacking -- YTCracker -- featured on a track. Inverse Phase and King Fisher of TRIAD also join us, gracing two tracks with musical and binary street cred that goes back decades.

This is the main theme for the game Trillek, an open-source continuation of Mojang's cancelled 0x10c.

The theme takes the listener on a journey from being thrusted into an ever-expanding space, ever more colorful and dramatic. After ramping up all the way, it concludes with fear of the unknown and broken communications, or -- dare I say it -- a busted on-board computer. You know, your average day in space. :) Of course, the third part of the story arc is what comes next, when the game begins, and is left to the player.

Amplitude Problem - Atari Gangster ft. YTCracker

Before it was called "chiptune", we called it "music" because it was the way you made music on computers for games and demos. It wasn't a choice so much as a necessity due to limitations in 80s hardware.

Sure, soundtrackers using samples were starting to pop up but more so on the Commodore Amiga than the Atari ST, the latter not being able to do much else while its 8MHz CPU was tied up real-time mixing four channels of samples. (The Amiga had dedicated hardware.) At some point, we started calling it blip-blop to distinguish it from the growing sample tracker movement (and digidrum, which blended native YM2149 sounds with sampled drums as a performance/soundscape compromise).

This medley contains my five surviving blip-blop tunes from that era (when I went by 7an of Sync), as played back by the three-channel YM2149 sound chip. It heavily features the "envelope bass", a brutal beast of a sound that might be considered the Atari ST's most distinguishing one. It's a sound that was only invented toward the end of the ST's natural life. (You might say that the mighty 16-bit home computer is currently on extended life-support administered by a fanatic group of nostalgics, and I thank them for that.)

I did some mild mastering work on this medley and I think you'll enjoy the sound quality even (especially?) when you crank it up. You'll have to forgive the elementary melodies and chord progressions; I was 17 and couldn't write a hook to save my life. :)

Amplitude Problem is Juan Irming, a Los Angeles producer, composer, sound designer and keyboardist with a focus on synthwave, chiptune, soundtracks, hip hop, video game music and sound effects.

Juan got his start on the European demoscene in the late 80s as the composer for world-famous and humble Atari ST demo crew SYNC, placing first in several demo music contests. Since attending Musicians Institute in the early 90s, he has composed and produced video game inspired synth and chip soundtracks for a number of projects and records such as legendary geek rapper YTCracker's cyberpunk album Introducing Neals. Credited on 11 LPs, he has been featured on albums alongside artists like Mitch Murder, Lazerhawk and GUNSHIP. Juan has appeared live at events and venues such as Comic Con and Game On Expo alongside acts like The Gothsicles, The Minibosses and Future Holotape. He also writes themes for video games such as Power Drive 2000.

Influences include first-generation chip composers Rob Hubbard, Ben Daglish, Martin Galway and Maniacs of Noise in addition to electronic, industrial, jazz and hip hop acts such as Damokles, Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre, Alphaville, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Herbie Hancock and Public Enemy.
