Crate digging DJs Mr Thing and Chris Read return to BBE Music with a second volume of their compilation series ‘The Library Archive’, presenting more Funk, Jazz, Beats and Soundtracks from the archives of Cavendish Music.

Founded back in 1937 and originally known as Boosey & Hawkes Recorded Music Library, Cavendish Music is the largest independent Library Music publisher in the UK and also represents a host of music catalogues across the globe. The influence of Library Music on British pop culture cannot be overstated, especially during the 1970s when companies KPM, De Wolfe and of course Boosey & Hawkes provided the soundtracks to iconic TV shows such as The Sweeney and The Professionals, as well as a host of feature films.

The discs produced by Boosey & Hawkes for TV and radio production have, over the intervening years, gained a cult following among collectors and have found themselves sampled by successive generations of beatmakers. Renowned scratch DJ Mr Thing and WhoSampled’s Chris Read, both lifetime beat fanatics, first entered the Cavendish vaults in 2014, presenting their first compilation of rare Library Music cuts in 2017 on BBE Music. Both knew that Cavendish Music’s vast low-ceilinged London basement still held a host of hidden treasure just waiting to be rediscovered, so the pair returned in 2020, emerging with ‘The Library Archive 2 – More Funk, Jazz, Beats and Soundtracks from the Archives of Cavendish Music’.

“This new collection leans toward the less obvious titles, not only the funky sides and tracks ripe for sampling but also some of the jazzier corners of the catalogue” says Chris Read. “As with Volume 1, this is more than merely a collection for sample heads – it’s a compilation of great funk, jazz, soundtracks and experimental themes to be enjoyed by DJs, producers and fans of good music alike.”

The third single to be taken from the forthcoming album ‘The Globeflower Masters Vol.2’. Glenn and Mark have crafted a rich tapestry of cinematic funk and European Library music. Inspired by such luminaries as Roger Webb, Stefano Torossi, David Axelrod & Serge Gainsbourg.

The 'Calico Suite' finds Glenn and Mark shifting gears for what is their most uptempo track released to date. 

Looser and imbued with more swagger than previous productions, 'Calico Suite' enters into tight and slightly edgy 60s library funk territory before mutating into dreamy 70s Headhunters-esque jazz-funk. Balancing light and shade, the triumvirate of Glenn’s bass grooves, Mark’s rhythmic Clavinet and electric piano playing, and John Maiden's drums interact with perfection.

Ricardo Paris is a Portuguese-born DJ / record collector based in London. Since the young age of 13, music and record collecting have always been a big part of his life – records were always around the house and playing on his dad’s old Pioneer record player. But it is not until ’95 that Skateboarding, Hip-hop culture and all the jazz/soul sampled tracks became a love in his life and a deep inspiration within his eclectic DJ sets. 

For our October in-store, London DJ and collector Ricardo Paris came through with a selection of Brazilian gems and Latin grooves.

Spinning all things quirky with an eclectic fruity twist.  The Shizzle is a weekly radio show on 99.9 BAY FM (Byron Bay) exploring a diverse range of music from the now, yesterday and tomorrow.  A show that touches on  psychedelia, techno, post punk, disco, house, leftfield electronic music, downbeat, world exotica & more. If I like it I play it!! 

I am a music junkie who is happiest playing to an adventurous dance floor. Originally from Melbourne I now call the Byron Shire home. In Melbourne I presented various electronic music radio shows on 3PBS FM, was a founding member of the Global Eyes music/art project and a regular fixture on Melbourne’s underground dj scene spinning at intimate affairs through to clubs and larger festivals including Earthcore,  Rainbow Serpent & The Eclipse Festival. I love playing music to a smiling crowd from intimate gathering through to larger shenanigans.
