Berlin-based Katiusha is known for building hi-energy, intricate stories on the dancefloor. With a background in experimental radio and non-profit parties, her taste has always extended far and wide – but her club selections draw heavily on atmospheric rollers, leftfield techno, and UK impact. Flying from hardcore to jungle, techno to dubstep and some ambient nuances; fearlessly barrels through genres with the utmost care and precision - truly one of the tidiest DJs.

This sound has caught the attention of revered venues like FOLD, Tresor, and Berghain’s SÄULE. On air, she's played for Boiler Room, Rinse FM, and Moxie’s semanal NTS show and Festivals like Dimensions and Cosmic Roots. Last year she made a strong entrance onto the production scene with debuts on Peach Discs and Idle Hands: in 2024 she leaned into a more trippy bass sound, releasing on dubstep imprint SPLOT and, more recently, her own label GRACE. The label is a new project for hazy club sonics, with a DIY ethos and producer equity at its core.

𝙇𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 - zizi K invites Katiusha / Internet Public Radio

After growing up on the renegade scene of Montreal, Paul (alias como se DJ) moved to Brooklyn and founded the DIY party series RECESS with the intention of bringing a psy-forward sound he felt was missing in New York City. Inspired by forest raves and experimental dance music, he dreamt up his party with the desire to conjure the feeling of dancing in open nature with your friends. como se DJ’s sets strikes a balance of body- and heart-activating psychedelia. At once mischievous and emotional, he pulls in sonic elements of bass, deep techno, prog and electro, flirting with genre and groove, while maintaining a lush, blissed-out undercurrent. But this mix features a different sound for him: tender, melancholic, analeptic ambience.

1. How/why did you get into DJing?

I learned to DJ during COVID lockdown. I was living in Montreal, and I just had acquired my friend’s beaten up DDJ-400. I’d just moved into this new apartment where I’d host these ridiculous dinner parties with my “COVID bubble” of about 30 of my friends. Three or four days a week, I’d have everyone over for some truly insane meal, followed immediately by a house party. The handful of us who were beginner DJs would clang out some tunes and we’d all dance around til sunrise or until we got bored and then we’d do it all again <48 hours later. We all started out at varying levels of DJ adeptness, but through these dinner parties and occasional group DJ sessions, we all helped each other get better. It was beautiful; extremely surreal, but it worked wonders. 

2. What was the coziest gig you've been to/experienced and why?

Earlier this summer, I went back to Montreal to play this renegade party called Layer 05. That crew had been doing a bi-monthly party in the open at this wicked location in Longueuil, across the water looking into the city. It took place in this secluded forested spot right on the water, the dancefloor was a clearing in the woods, and you’d turn around and be staring at this old amusement park called La Ronde with the lights from the rides and from the city reflecting on the St. Lawrence River. After my set, two of my fav Aussies, LOIF and Sina, played some extremely wooky psychedelia (in proper Australian form) through the night into sunrise. It was my first time playing to a big crowd in the woods, and the vibes were perfection all night – it felt like a night at a festival: deeply joyous, intimate, and serene. 

3. Do you consider yourself an introvert/extrovert in the scene?

Without a doubt, I’d say I’m an extrovert in the scene. I always related to others over music. The kinds of music you are drawn to says a lot about you and your values. I go through phases of being obsessed with certain sounds/genres/DJs, and I’m endlessly curious and determined to meet others who happen to share my particular musical affinities as they change and grow with my taste. 

4. If you had to choose 1 track to vibe out to forever, what would it be?

I’d have to go with “Swim” by Madonna, produced by William Orbit in his idiosyncratic triphoppy, dreamy, and deep style. It’s a masterpiece and – in my opinion – far too underrated. It’s groovy, sultry, and a bit darker for Madonna than her usual sound. (Honorable mentions: Protection, by Tracey Thorn & Massive Attack; The One to Wait, by CCFX; We Float, by PJ Harvey.)

5. What is your routine when preparing for a gig? Do you have any special remedies/mental/physical prep?

It’s gig-dependent, but I like to spend the day before the gig alone, listening through sets of the other artists on the bill. I like to get a sense of their sound and use that to figure out how my set / timeslot will fit into the flow of the evening. I like to arrive on the earlier side to see how the night unfolds, and so I get a sense of the crowd and what they’re vibing with. I’m very conscious of the progression of a party and I want to make sure I play something that feels event-appropriate, while taking things in unexpected directions.

You’ll know by now that Bambi and Beatrice M. are pretty different in their approach to DJing, which makes it all the more interesting and fun for them to find the lovely middle ground they pleasantly settle in during their b2bs. For this one, the key word is: dub. »
