After a year & a half of mixes, I’m humbled and excited to see animix hit number #50 with this banging, get-me-back-to-the-club mix from local icon Simon TK. Looking back, it’s warming to see how animix has spanned an amazing array of artists, styles, locations and moons. 

Simon TK ( @simon-tk ) has been a mainstay in the Naarm/ Melbourne scene for a long while now, playing an integral part in some of the city’s most loved and important musical institutions, such as Skylab radio and the recently launched vinyl imprint for the long-standing Waxo Paradiso duo/ collective, and Club d’Erange.

An incredibly talented DJ, Simon is a musical chameleon, somehow shining in every different style and mood he pulls out of the hat. His versatility, skill and dedication to community has left him with a well deserved respect amongst the Australian musical community, and his taste and bubbly vibe are just the cherry on the cake.

Who/what currently inspires you music-wise that has nothing to do with music?

Water and light mostly 

What is your favorite party/collective where you reside and why?

Too many faves. Some heavy hitters off the top are Umami/Echo Flats/Heavenly/Community Chest. They are %100 in it for the experience. Community Chest is a joint force crew of about 7 great crews from Sydney – It’s kinda like when the power rangers come together to make that big robot fighter guy

What was your best moment at the supermarket?

They were playing Bill Withers in a Woollies once and it got me

What is your most recent favorite DJ mix and why?

Max D – Indie Rock on C- was maybe the last one that got me good. Max D only plays by Max D’s rules

Any advice to upcoming DJs/producers?

ED051, Second Contact’s DJ set, is inspired by the ethos of Fight Club and the idea of embracing personal liberation through self-destruction and chaos.    Influenced by both the film’s structure and tempo, the mix is framed by symmetry and the concept of bookending in filmmaking; a structural technique where the beginning and ending scenes reflect one another. The set starts strangely with a mundane sense of repetition and polished emptiness gradually evolving into unrestrained intensity before retreating back into itself.

Two collaborative tracks and a solo track each showcase their shared tastes, blending al dente’s intricate percussion with explicit joy’s evolving modular leads. A playful detour that is the result of their distinctive styles coming together.

djfix is a Brooklyn based dj, producer, and co-founder of Earth Dog Records. Often found in his studio, he sculpts tracks that are as texturally rich as they are dancefloor-ready. His music moves between swung hi-hats, dirty grooves, and lush pads, always balancing flexibility behind the decks with a commitment to his own sound; driving, trippy, and psychedelic. His love for synths shines through in tracks like Seed Cycle, where heavy basslines meet dense, distorted layers anchored by a non stop groove. Inspired equally by the movement of NYC and the stillness of the PNW, he crafts sonic journeys that blur the lines between deep, meditative spaces and high-energy club moments.

"I wanted my mix to capture the contrasts I was feeling while moving between cities and nature in my recent travels. In selecting the music I tried to reflect that combination of textures with nights out with friends, wandering through new spaces, and landing back in nature. It moves from something darker and uncertain into a more club-focused momentum while keeping a sense of mystery. The best setting to listen is on a train or in a car heading toward a soft place to land."
