Anjunabeats stalwart Graeme Shepherd, aka Grum, releases his fourth artist album, ‘Unreality’. Out now.

‘Unreality’ is his most reflective work to date, putting human connection in the digital age under the microscope. A story in two halves, the album is introspective, ideas-driven and song-heavy, holding a mirror to Graeme’s own emotional journey over the last two years.

The visceral nature of Graeme’s work has been present since his debut LP ‘Heartbeats’. A feel-good, get up and dance record championed by Annie Mac and Pete Tong in the early 2010s, Grum was a product of the blog era, riding the heights of Hype Machine with his synth-heavy sound. As he pivoted towards the dance floor, both his sound and the stories he wanted to tell became more daring.

‘Shout’, his cover of the Tears For Fears classic, was a prog house protest anthem that foreshadowed 2019’s ‘Deep State’ LP - an underground epic with an undercurrent of discontent, evident in the acid-tinged ‘Stay’, Depeche Mode-esque ‘Lose Control’ or hypnotic ‘Altered State’. 'Deep State' eventually spawned his own record label of the same name which has gone from strength to strength in recent years.

On his new album 'Unreality', there’s an undeniable summer euphoria to ‘Don’t Look Down’ and ‘Taking Over Me’, written alongside regular collaborator Natalie Shay, a rising star of the U.K. indie-pop scene. ‘Faded Memory’ and ‘Come Alive’, both featuring Sarah Appel, are a synth-heavy shot of adrenalin, channelling the glossy optimism of 1980s pop in a punchy contemporary production.

Another recognisable voice, Dom Youdan, enters the fold. Having previously worked with Grum on Tomorrow’ and ‘Invisible’, there’s a tangible yearning for deeper human connection in ‘Be The Horizon’ and ‘Virtual Companion’. Lead single ‘Disconnected’, featuring Daniel Sealine, is designed for the darkest corners of a club; a techno-infused helter-skelter ride with Daniel’s vocal bursting out of the shadows.

We close with a moment of hope in ‘Look To The Light’, Graeme’s first vocal performance on a record, and the introspective acceptance of ‘Our Cosmic Insignificance’.

Grum’s ‘Unreality’ is out now on Anjunabeats, with vinyl available to pre-order on the Anjuna Music Store now. Grum embarks on phase one of his ‘Unreality’ tour this summer, including 18 dates across North America with shows in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Chicago, Toronto and more, plus a stop off at Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy Weekender London festival this September. Genix reveals two new club-minded tracks, ‘Libre / Higher & Higher’, out now on Anjunabeats. 

‘Libre / Higher & Higher’ see Damo continue to explore the wider influences behind his forthcoming debut album ‘199X’, including Sasha, Eric Prydz and Underworld. 

A love letter to rave culture, ‘199X’ is a departure from the sound Damo is best known for. Through the late 2000s and 2010s, Genix was well known for his textured, melodic take on trance. He caught the ear of Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk, securing releases on both Armada and Vandit. Genix arrived on Anjunabeats in 2010 and immediately became a mainstay in Above & Beyond’s sets with tracks like ‘Aura’, ‘Destinations’ and ‘Black Water’ (the latter written with regular touring partner Sunny Lax).

A polished DJ, Genix has performed around the world: festival stages at Creamfields (UK), Tomorrowland, EDC, ABGT250 and 350, to more intimate club affairs; Ministry Of Sound, The Hollywood Palladium, Warehouse Project. These shows don’t live up to the heights of playing 5,597 metres above sea level though, where in April 2019 Genix set the Guinness World Record for the highest DJ set on land with a party at Everest Base Camp.

Damo is a self-professed fitness fanatic, and recently challenged the Anjunafamily to the ‘X4 Challenge’: an international collective effort to walk 10,000 miles, in partnership with Anjunabeats and fitness app Stridekick. The response was staggering, with over 600 Genix/Anjuna fans answering the call. The initial target was smashed in under a week. Renamed the ‘X5 Challenge’, the new goal is 100,000 miles by October 10 - four times the circumference of the Earth. 

Genix’s debut album ‘199X’ arrives September 10, and is available for both vinyl and digital pre-order now on the Anjuna Music Store. Damo is back on the road this fall on his ‘199X’ album tour, including a headline show at London’s Orange Yard and supporting Above & Beyond at their Group Therapy 450 celebrations. Above & Beyond and long-time collaborator Justine Suissa share their first joint effort in over four years, ‘Almost Home’. 

‘Almost Home’ is Above & Beyond’s first club track of 2021, arriving just in time for their Group Therapy 450 milestone show at The Drumsheds in London this September. ABGT450 is their first headline show in over a year, and will see the trio perform to an audience of more than 10,000 fans. Later in September, Above & Beyond embark on the Anjunafamily Reunion Tour, which visits major cities across the U.S.A. including sold-out stops at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Stanford’s Frost Amphitheater and the world-famous Echostage in D.C. 

Jono, Tony, Paavo and Justine have been working together since 2000 when they formed the group OceanLab. In 2008, they released their first and only album ‘Sirens Of The Sea’,a record that has gained near-mythical status among trance fans. More recently, Above & Beyond and Justine have collaborated on club hits like ‘Alright Now’, ‘Cold Feet’ and ‘Another Chance’, and emotive, downtempo records like ‘Little Something’. 

In 2016, Justine joined Above & Beyond during their sell-out ‘Acoustic II’ tour, which stopped at iconic venues including Royal Albert Hall in London and The Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. 

“This is a track that we originally wrote with Justine some years ago. Like many musicians during lockdown, we buried ourselves in the studio and had plenty of time to pick through old ideas. ‘Almost Home’, with its ’80s production influences, caught our ear. We sent it across to Justine again, and she rewrote the second verse to reflect her feelings on it today - we won’t tell you what it’s about though, we’ll leave that for you to decide. This track started in quite a different form, so we’ve also done a Club Mix to bring it a bit more up-to-date. Progressive house connoisseur, Deep State label head and Anjunabeats stalwart, June 24 sees the release of his fourth artist album, ‘Unreality’; his most reflective work to date, putting human connection in the digital age under the microscope. 

“This is about remembering our humanity, which perhaps we lost a little bit over the last couple of years - maybe we can get a bit of it back in the dark, under some strobe lights.” 

A story in two halves, the album is introspective, ideas-driven and song heavy, holding a mirror to Graeme’s own emotional journey over the last two years. 

“The first half mostly came about in the summer of 2020. With all that time on my hands, and as a form of therapy, I started rediscovering a lot of 80s music I loved and hadn’t listened to for a long time. This turned into doing special 80s livestreams to connect with my fans. There is definitely a bit of longing here for simpler and happier times.” Grum explains. “The second half of the album has a darker, apocalypse rave feel to it”.

Designed for the darkest of dance floors, lead single ‘Disconnected’ featuring Daniel Sealine provides one of those cataclysmic moments; a techno infused helter-skelter ride with Daniel’s vocal bursting out of the shadows.

◾How did you come up with your dj name: With the real name of Citron finding my DJ name was easy.

◾How and when did you get into djing: I started DJ’ing in 1998. At the time i was living in my fraternity house. My little brother that year put his turn tables in my room, because i had space. He taught me the basics.

◾Who are your musical influences and what is your inspiration: I’m inspired by jazz, percussion, and worldly sounds. As for which musicians inspired me, there’s honestly to many to mention.

◾Describe your sound as a DJ: An exploration of multi cultural, and multi generational sounds layered on a bed of booty shaking bass.

◾What does the future hold in store for you as an artist: This coming weekend i’m playing at a festival in Tennessee called To The Moon. If you happen to be there you can catch me Sat night from Midnight to 1am at the Headroom Stage.
