Unremarkable

This is the 6th track and sad and sentimental piano solo song included in '24 Piano Sketches' that is a new solo album from Yuki Murata, the Tokyo-based pianist/composer and member of the cinematic instrumental music band, Anoice, and its side projects, RiLF and Films, who fascinates music fans in the world by her lovely melodies and piano sounds.

As the name suggests, '24 Piano Sketches' includes 24 piano songs which Yuki Murata plays improvisations on her own grand and upright pianos. This long project is going to add 2 songs every month and ultimately 24 songs in one year, allowing the listeners to feel the changing of the season in real-time via the beautiful, warm, and sometimes melancholic piano sounds.

This time, she purposely selected a cassette tape recorder, a MiniDisc player, and an early generation of iPhone as the recording equipments for each song, unlike studio albums from her own bands such as Anoice. These retro and simplistic recording devices were able to capture not only a creaking noise coming from the piano and the environmental sounds outside the window, but also a noise occurred by cheap microphones, which make this album so impressive. Its nostalgic soundscape may remind her listeners of her first solo album 'Films' and second solo album 'Home'.

You should feel the changing of the seasons with the beautiful piano melodies.

'Fragments of Scattered Whispers' is the sixth album from Endless Melancholy, a solo-project of Oleksiy Sakevych from Kyiv, Ukraine. It follows previous releases on labels such as Preserved Sound, 1631 Recordings and Hidden Vibes.

Arriving on CD, digital and heavyweight vinyl editions, 'Fragments of Scattered Whispers' is a collection of soft piano melodies and transparent ambient textures, gently flowing one into another. On this album Endless Melancholy continues with the tape sound explorations, started on his previous album 'The Vacation', but in a new, more distinctive way. On this occasion, Oleksiy teamed up with Krzysztof Sujata (known for his musical outfit Valiska), who did some outstanding job on processing the tracks through different kinds of tape recorders and mastering them afterwards. Accompanied by a stunning artwork by an acclaimed artist Gregory Euclide, 'Fragments of Scattered Whispers' is meant to evoke hazy reminiscences from the deepest corners of listener's mind, like a blurry photograph suddenly falling out of an old book.

E463 | What is Greek music? For our guest Panayotis League, it's no one thing. Rather, it is diversity that defines the many regional musical traditions of Greece and the broader Greek diaspora. In this episode, we discuss League's ethnomusicological research on Greek music in diaspora, and we explore the history and transformation of Ottoman Greek music before and after the exchange of populations between Turkey and Greece. As League explains, Greek music in the Ottoman Empire was inextricably linked to the musical traditions of neighboring Turkish, Armenian, and Sephardic communities. However, the First World War, the Second Greco-Turkish War, and the exchange of populations that sent the entire Greek Orthodox population of Anatolia to Greece eliminated spaces of intercommunality where Ottoman music thrived. In our conversation, we discuss how the intercommunal music of the Ottoman Empire survived in Greece among exchanged people who pioneered the new rebetiko style that would reshape Greek popular music. We also discuss how the music of Ottoman Greeks fit into a larger diasporic communal dynamic in places like the United States.

Panayotis League is Assistant Professor of Ethnomusicology at Florida State University and Director of the Center for Music of the Americas. He publishes widely on Greek and Brazilian music, dance, and oral poetry, and his monograph "Echoes of the Great Catastrophe: Re-Sounding Anatolian Greekness in Diaspora" is forthcoming from the University of Michigan Press. He performs the traditional music of Kalymnos and Crete throughout the Greek diaspora, and in 2019 was named a Master Artist by the Florida Folklife Program.

Chris Gratien is Assistant Professor of History at University of Virginia, where he teaches classes on global environmental history and the Middle East. He is currently preparing a monograph about the environmental history of the Cilicia region of the former Ottoman Empire from the 1850s until the 1950s.
