Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section International imprint curate the second instalment of SHOUTS, a 21 track compilation with a diverse selection of artists whose music spans spoken word, DIY funk, house, techno, trap, indie, RnB and the many sub genres in between. SHOUTS 2021 highlights the dynamic journey and sound of the Rhythm Section International imprint, this time focusing on a global selection of completely new artists. An opportunity to shout about the next generation of musical talent from across the UK, Ireland, US, Middle East, Australia, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

SHOUTS 2021 boasts an incredible selection of a once in a generation type of burgeoning talent. Kareem Ali, praised by the likes of Pitchfork and Resident Advisor for his cosmic house sounds, most notably the Quantum Blackness LP. Crack Magazine cover star - neo-classical artist CKTRL who made a huge impact with his beautiful track ‘Robyn’ earlier this year. GLOR1A and the Yokai the Deity remix for SHOUTS 2021 is rooted in FDM, a dance movement in NYC started from Jamaican culture. James Massiah whose stunning spoken word opens the compilation. Sami who also co-creates NPR’s Code Switch podcast. As well as Klein Zage, Adam Pits, Pookie, and too many more to mention.

The debut SHOUTS compilation released in 2020 was a celebration of 5 years of Rhythm Section, where Bradley and label manager Emily Hill took stock of what the label had achieved, what was happening in the now, whilst also looking forward. The pair had no clear intention of making SHOUTS an annual concept, but curating the debut proved to be such a positive process, allowing them to work more spontaneously on A&R, and it only felt natural to continue. SHOUTS 2021 sees Rhythm Section International cast the net even further due to the pandemic highlighting how simple it can be to connect with people globally via platforms such as Zoom - providing a positive spin on the last 18 months.

“We now have such a global outreach because of how simple it is to jump on Zoom and make connections with people across the world. Before the pandemic we’d mainly wait until we could meet up face to face with people, usually making plans with those who were more localised to our South East London hub. In the past 18 months we’ve connected with artists we wouldn’t necessarily have before and explored new sounds, and that’s been a great thing.” - Emily Hill (MLE)

He recalled the night before, remembered the smoke which filled the room as the music began to play loudly, her smile was radiant in the darkened haze.

The next few hours had been. a blur as he lost himself in the rhythm of the music which bounced and blundered between the walls of the small club. This was a magical place, a party like no other.

Sure enough, as he’d hoped he’d saw her later, she’d followed him home in the glow of the morning sun after the night before. Or perhaps that was just a memory of what had been before…

Awanto 3 is set to release a new EP on Rush Hour, a fun affair built up of moody textures and broken beats which really goes hard and comes with an interesting back story to boot…

“Party was born in a small village located in Wallonia during a period of house-sitting for a family on holiday. Initially my mother was asked to take care of the chickens, goat, dog and donkey but eventually I decided to take care of them to relieve my mother. This week turned out to be a small nightmare, because I think the house was being possessed by a spirit that I had to deal with night and day. The vibe of the house was so grimy, due to the fact that there were calendars with all kinds of weapons and dark oak furniture, interspersed with a huge flatscreen and blinds at the ready to be rolled out when the sun started to go down (by request of the paranoid owner). This setting affected my sketches; a dark side that was looking for contra light weight. After I took care of the animals, I had an energy to escape to my MPC to make the basis for a possible new album. When I got back in Amsterdam, I started to work out some of the sketches I’ve made in the ghost house together with Stefan and Jos in Studio K at Sloterdijk.”

We at Bolting Bits keenly anticipate every release from X-Kalay, a label outputting varied strands of house, techno, breakbeat sounds, electro and more. Recurring themes of music from the London label are gritty drums and acid-or-almost-acid textures, wrapped up in energetic dance floor material suitable for 1-3am peak-time club nights. So we’re unsurprised, in the best possible way, about their latest release.

Today we’re premiering Rest Assured, the B1 track from LT’s debut EP on label. The three track record certainly has a particular sound, an original style. All three tracks flow smoothly between sections of almost only drums and bass into long stretches of uplifting and brighter pads and chords. The result is that sweet spot between change and continuity.

Rest Assured is the slowest and our favourite of the three tracks. Heavy breakbeat rhythms pop up sporadically throughout the song, sometimes intersecting with long, drawn out pads. Electricsounding percussion is another nice feature. If that’s hard to picture, that’s because it’s hard to describe. Let’s go with something like high-pitched tom drums if they spoke robot? The safest bet is to check it out for yourself.

The A1 track, Sputnik (B.S.S.), on the other hand, is faster and more energetic. There’s a similar dynamic between breakbeats and pads, but the vibe is, unmistakably, designed for a warmed-up dance floor. B2 and the title track of the EP, Staminize, sits somewhere between the other two. It’s powerful without being forceful or abrasive and could feasibly be weaved into a set in the first or latter half of a night.

Staminize drops today, January 14. So, especially you crate diggers, do yourselves a favour and get on this one early.

PREMIERE: LT - Rest Assured

Takeshi Kouzuki returns to ALLEY VERSION label for sharing with the brothers duo FLML, the split mini-LP “Tracks From The Alley”.

From his early cult releases for Mathematics Recordings, Takeshi Kouzuki, as in these new tracks, keeps crossing old school house with his recognizable classy signature.
The warm but hitting acid of “福”, opens the Takeshi Kouzuki’s side, while in the second track “1986” deep-and-dark synthetic magic atmospheres are driven by the beating of the twins TR707 and TR727 drum machines. “Yellowacid” burns in its acid-jackin’ madness.

Openig FLML’s side “Hot Spread” is obscure jackin’ techno mechanical psychedelia, the following “Jack That Strings” is a pure raw windy city deep‘n’acid track. In the closing “Does Mean It’s You” a freaky FM synth melody is driven by the pulsing of liquid and creepy analog synths and drums, while an 8-bit sampled Andy Warhol’s speaking fragment marks the space, until dies in a delay feedback.
