you’re waiting for a train that might never come. the air hums with sleep and something older. you stand between what’s real and what remembers you. places unfold in your head like old film burning through the reel. you can’t tell how long it’s been. the rails keep singing soft and low like they know your name. you think you know where it goes but maybe that’s another dream. time bends here it forgets itself. still you wait. the fog moves like breath. something out there is calling but it sounds more like a memory than a voice. maybe it’s not about the end anymore. maybe it’s just the waiting. the hum. the small faith that you’re still moving.

Initial listens to Inre Rymden (Swedish for “Inner Space”) reveal it to be a curious combination of slow-motion house music and salubrious New Age funk. In this case, first impressions are accurate, and they should intrigue you enough to dive deeper into the paradisiacal vistas Tommy Awards paint here. The opening track “Prometheus” introduces that feeling of sundown deliquescence that very few musicians can summon, as it locks into a laid-back groove that induces utmost serene, buoyed by sublimely mellow guitar vibes that should make fans of Manuel Göttsching's Ashra and Phil Manzanera's solo output spring to attention. “Draget” conjures the sort of exquisite elegance and preternatural chill last heard on Roxy Music's 1982 LP Avalon — but somehow it's even more blissed out than that boudoir classic. And so it goes for most of Inre Rymden: Among the six tracks, only “Rexy” hints at tension, courtesy of a bass line that sounds like it should score a prisoner's walk to the electric chair. But that's tempered by guitar sighs
of radiant melancholy, not unlike those looped by Popol Vuh's Daniel Fichelscher. Even when Inre Rymden gets relatively uptempo, as on “Hans Logan,” it still glides like gilded, glazed, Balearic house jams, urged on by subliminal bongos and dappled with pastel guitar shimmers far out on the horizon. “Music is love and love is our music,” runs Tommy Awards' slogan (a sentiment beautifully echoed by David Crosby on his revered 1971 album If I Could Only Remember My Name), but one could also argue that it is medicine — a balmy ear massage that spreads healing frissons to all areas of your body and mind. Tommy Awards continue their miraculous act as Scandinavians channeling the tropics with stunning audio verisimilitude. Someone should notify the Nobel Prize committee.

Leng Records is kicking off its 2019 release program by offering a debut to a previously unheralded producer from Russia’s fast growing nu-disco underground. Given the quality of the two original tracks on show on his first Leng outing, something tells us that we’re going to be hearing much more from Moscow-based Takovoi in the months and years ahead.

On the A-side you’ll find “5-2-9”, an effortlessly dreamy and Balearic affair that ebbs, flows and slowly unfurls over six spellbinding minutes. The track is built around a chunky, acid style bassline and loose, delay-laden drum machine beats. Yet it’s the drifting and dubbed-out musical elements that cluster around the groove – leisurely keys, yearning trumpet solos and kaleidoscopic, arpeggio style synthesizer melodies – that make “5-2-9” such a magical piece of music. Think of it as a statement of intent.

Takovoi’s love of TB-303 style acid lines and mind-altering electronics comes to the fore on “The Fox With The Dog” which sees the up-and-coming producer give his take on the timeless electro sound. It’s as spacey and atmospheric as you’d expect, with exotic electronic refrains and glacial synthesizer lines dancing across the sound-space. The groove – a combination of punchy drum machine hits, heavy acid-style sub-bass, occasional bursts of hand percussion and breakbeats – is pleasingly heavy, too, making this particular electro excursion a bona fide dancefloor delight.

Following up on their debut LP Kick Drunk Love for Marcel Vogel’s Intimate Friends imprint a few years back, we are proud to present the next installment in the sporadic KAMM legacy: Cookie Policies.

Far more sonically rich and musically adventurous than its predecessor, Cookie Policies sees the band make bold strides into new territories where classically hardwired categories such as jazz, indie rock, and electronica melt into one another with immaculate, timeless ease.

The band members’ positions are more clear cut as well this round, with Marc David Barrite (aka Dave Aju, who also did one of his coveted mix engineering jobs on the LP) on prominent lead vocals in many of the pieces, Alland Byallo on trumpet, Kenneth Scott on synth bass, and Marc Smith adding guitar sections while the others shared the arranging and programming duties. This makes for a deeper continuation of the otherworldly combination of their known individual production styles, as well as a musical whole truly greater than the sum of its parts.

The set starts off with “Bird Call”, whose opening ode to Morricone ok corral-meets-samurai showdown riffs flow into a loose and drifting psychedelic boom bap blip, building until a glorious change-up of key and energy brings the track to its peak and deconstructed back down. “Rachel, the Largest Bullfrog” then takes things in a sweeter, slightly more traditionally-structured direction where dusty indie-folk ballad vibes intersect with an array of twisted cosmic tones, bits of computer keyboard percussion, and deep rolling sub bass. “Buckle Down” then moves things back away from acoustic restraints into a beautiful synth-laden musing on potential regret, with an ultra-potent horn section from Byallo vs a nasty stacked Roland SH-101 finish.

“CCBPGC” cools things off for a few minutes with an ambient field recording slice-and-dice motif, which slowly but surely evolves into a slinking jazz noir groove from another dimension. The more traditional song structures return on the lovely “La Luna”, where Barrite’s pen and soulful voice take to nautical longing themes over apropos waves of sonic textures. The ebb and flow of the verse/chorus sections eventually rise and give way to an absolutely gorgeous denouement. “Shleem” then takes us into pure unadulterated soaring sci-fi soundtrack ambient blast-off bliss, while the epic closing track “The Soft Glow of Electric Sex” gives a hearty nod to early masters of sprawling psychedelic jam sessions, from Pink Floyd and Can to In A Silent Way-era Miles and Liquid Liquid, while bringing it clearly into futurist millennia. The gradual evolution of the piece into its grand finale is the stuff we true music-lovers live and die for. We hope you enjoy the ride as much as we do.
