On ‘From the 20th Century Box’ Arno Peeters, aka Sp@sms, returns to U-Trax with his debut full-length album. Showcasing years of sonic exploration stemming from his time in various groups including Random XS and Voltage Control amongst others, the LP also draws from his experience studying and teaching music at the Centre for Electronic Music as well as his work in project-based sound design.

Filled to the brim with pulsating arpeggios, crunchy drums and dark, moody atmospheres, the LP is marked by a retro yet timeless feel. Inbetween its snaking, squelchy synth lines and old school electro grooves Sp@sms masterfully incorporates playful textures and elements from found recordings and unused projects, resulting in a vastly versatile and experimental album fusing all things techno, acid and EBM.

An expert lesson in sound design and composition taught by one of the Netherlands’ most trusted and experienced artists, the LP also contains remixes from Dame Music’s Bloody Mary and Utrecht electro stalwart Cosmic Force and arrives via Vinyl, CD, Digital, and Cassette mediums.

Sjarrel krijgt het minimumloon en nauwelijks psychologische begeleiding. Toch gaat hij niet weg. ‘Jullie doen goed werk’, hoort hij steeds. ‘Belangrijk werk. Jullie houden Facebook veilig.’

THE IMPLANT – Vigilante Logic EP  (Phoq U Phonogrammen - Ph.U.7)

This material is all composed in 1994, one of the most productive years of Arno Peeters aka Sp@sms, following releases like the concept album Fuzzy Logic (CD) and the double Re-Volt EP, both released on Djax-Up-Beats in 1995.
The Vigilante Logic EP is a rather hybrid work, featuring both acid and techno, electro and industrial-style mixes.

The experimental acid of Sloppy Slappin' and Comfortably Numb, that sounds a bit like Electronic Body Music on steroids, were originally meant for the Re-Volt EP, but didn't make it and became shelfware, which to both Arno and U-TRAX label boss DJ White Delight was a waste.
Hollywood Holdup Force is strongly influenced by the 1983 track "Al Naafiysh" (The Soul) by Hashim, what Arno still considers to be one of the foundations of electro. He tried to give it a more sinister and industrial feel, but still it has more the feel of electro than techno. It would precede the style he later expanded with Frank de Groodt (aka. Sonar Base/Pieces of a Pensive State of Mind) as Urban Electro.
Something similar can be said of Vigilante Volts, which is not straight-up techno, rather a mixture of dubby elements, spiced with analogue squeaks and embedded in an industrial layer.

It was in this period, the mid 90s, that Arno started questioning what techno would actually define: does it need a four-to-the-floor beat? Should only Roland gear be involved?  He was annoyed that many artists in those days were clinging on to rather strict interpretations or definitions of styles. A lot of what is on Fuzzy Logic strongly points in that way and there's almost no techno on that album.

Original release date: December 1996.

The original vinyl release is virtually sold out, but re-mastered digital versions of the tracks are available for download and streaming on May 15, 2020.

Arno started tape music in the early '80's and evolved to electronic music. First as the EBM-duo Voltage Control (2 EP's and one CD-album on Antler) and later as one of the first techno-artists in The Netherlands with some EP's on Djax-Up-Beats, as part of Random XS and Urban Electro and solo as Spasms. He turned away from techno to more experiMental stuff on his album 'Fuzzy Logic' and migrated to the German Mille Plateaux-label which released the award-winning AeroSon and two tracks on compilations.
He has worked as an editor and producer for Dutch National Radio 1,4 and 6 on which he hosted his own radioshow called Folio.
Currently he composes in 5.1 surround  and (as the one-man company Tape TV Productions) edits, mixes and masters all kinds of projects from the no-budget fine art to high profile and cutting edge multimedia.
Also he works as a media artist worldwide.
