Bäckahäst, named after a Norse mythological creature that in the shape of a beautiful horse lured children onto its back only to later drown them, is the first collaborative composition by Swedish musicians Jakob Lindhagen and Vargkvint (Sofia Nystrand). Set to create the mood of a modern folk tale in a closed-down amusement park, they used various toy instruments as a starting point, and later added musical saw, harmonium, bowed gongs, vocals and analogue synthesizers (that flirt with soundtracks such as Stranger Things and Twin Peaks), processing everything through various reel-to-reel tapes and analogue effects.

This year, piano and coffee turns five, and to celebrate, we are releasing our first compilation: Realismo Mágico — a conceptual project featuring unconventional works by new and old friends we have made along the way.

Inspired by magical realism, an artistic genre in which realistic narrative and naturalistic technique are combined with surreal elements of dream or fantasy, this special release presents unheard material by twelve exceptional musicians — from experimental sound artist Martyna Basta to award-winning film composer Alexandra Hamilton-Ayres, and from poly-instrumental duo Brueder Selke to prolific pianist and producer John Hayes.

Each artist has contributed with a new track that invites the listeners to submerge into their very own musical universes, which, at the same time, have been re-shaped by their interpretation of magical realism. We start off on our journey with the delicate nostalgia of Tim Linghaus, passing through Jakob Lindhagen and Vargkvint’s modern take on the story of a Norse mythological creature, followed by the harmonic ambiguity in Simeon Walker’s pleasingly strong dialogue between felted piano and drums. Later on, John Hayes shares with us a chaotic composition born out of samples from an old clock in his parents’ garage and saturated voices, which precedes Lucy Claire’s processed hydrophone recordings of seaweeds and starfishes in Australian waters. Ondes Martenot, pump organ, zither, analogue synthesizers, vocal processing, musical saw, and bowed gongs are some of the unusual elements to be found on this eclectic yet coherently unified record.

Realismo Mágico has been conceptually crafted and musically curated by Peruvian composer Sergio Díaz De Rojas, and beautifully depicted by illustrator Jordan Amy Lee and graphic designer Celia Fernández González.

In the middle of last year I couldn’t stop writing hymns for whatever reason… every piece I wrote sounded like a hymn, every song I wrote was based on hymn-like chord progressions. I suppose it was my own way of playing some peace into the atmosphere when it seemed society was coming apart. It can be hard to know how to respond to things as an artist, but I have a deep belief that creating can bring about its own kind of healing—healing not just for the artist but for those who listen (or watch) as well. 

It’s compositionally my favorite track on the EP—I took a traditional-sounding progression and expanded it into something with a modern-classical flavor. I also just love how insanely creaky and old this one ended up sounding… like one of the dusty, forgotten, and out-of-tune pianos I’ve played in so many churches over the years. It’s also the most fun to play!

Today I’m premiering a title track from a self-released single by Todd Chappell, recording under his project name, The Ideal Setback. Chappel and I first connected back in 2008, when I came upon his debut, Dream Dialogue. He has later self-released a follow-up, Window Seat, and I have since had my eye [and ear] on the development of his sound. Back then, his beautiful crossover between ambient and shoegaze comfortably settled into the plush cushion of guitar-driven swells and loop-based organic textures that comforted the mind. Nearly a decade later The Ideal Setback surprised me with Farnweh (2017), on which he combined his ambient, pastoral, and guitar-driven soundscapes with string fragments, piano chords, and even a few vocals. On “Anchor,” Chappell dives even further into cinematic orchestration with a beautifully arranged modern-classical composition, showcasing fragile violins, expanding pads, and swelling bass offering up a cozy space for the piano to tell its story. This is a natural progression for his sound, and I am eager to check out a full-length when one day it hopefully appears.

Ashot Danielyan is a pianist and film composer. He composes music in a variety of genres such as Classical, Ambient, New Age and Experimental music. His favourite instrument remains the piano, which he includes prominently in most of his music. Ashot composes music for movies, short films, trailers, presentations and advertising. Also he creates remixes, including the music of Mike Oldfield, Hannah Georgas, CoMa, Bajofondo Tango Club, Hans Zimmer, Dirk Maassen, Wolf Saga.

- semi-finalist of “The International Songwriting Competition” with his
instrumental composition “Shadows”;
- semi-finalist of “The UK Songwriting Contest” with “Vanilla Dawn”,
