Limbo

Limpet Space Race, a duo mishmashing pop, jazz, prog and diy electronics, release their new electronics, field recording and string orchestra piece with the internationally-acclaimed Orchestra of St John’s - Earth Flow. This piece is the first in ‘We Are Water’, a series commissioned by Cayenna Ponchione-Bailey in collaboration with climate and water researchers. ‘Earth Flow’ is a collaboration with research documentary project Himalayas To Ocean, exploring themes of erosion, landslides and climate change. It was recorded and filmed with the Orchestra of St John’s and Limpet Space Race at a socially-distanced session, July 2020 at OVADA Warehouse.

For her fifth album, March drew inspiration from her early childhood in the Warwickshire countryside, nineteenth-century nature poet John Clare, and Lewis Carroll’s fantastical Alice Through the Looking Glass. Throughout the album there’s a palpable sense of wonder at the natural world, shot through with a deep concern for nature’s vulnerability. Starlings & Crows resonates with notions of home on a macro and micro level. 

First single ‘To a Place’ is an elegant waltz built around swooning strings and piano. ‘Landing 1969’ sounds as astral as its subject matter would suggest, pulsing at the same tempo as Buzz Aldrin’s heart-rate as Apollo 11 left earth. ‘Remember That Sky’ is achingly emotive, showcasing March’s innate talent for creating an atmosphere of intimacy without compromising compositional depth. Despite running to a succinct 38 minutes, Starlings & Crows is lush and expansive, while distilled to its crystalline essence.

Alienation

In the quiet of the Hoh Rainforest of Olympic National Park, heavy rain falls on Vine Maples and dense underbrush of ferns, grasses, and other large-leaf ground cover. On this day, 2020-09-23, the park saw nearly its entire expected monthly precipitation (6.37 in/ 162 mm) in one 24 hour hard rainfall (5.93 in/ 151 mm), swelling the Hoh River into a raging monster that swept away trees along the shore. This recording is from an in-land quiet area about four miles into the Hoh River Trail.

Sometimes I hear people talking about "the sound of rain in a forest" as being just a single, monolithic sound that covers the entire forest, or even all forests. To these people I suggest to Listen More. Close your eyes and take it in. No recording can do justice to feeling of being there, the smell of cedar in the air and soil beneath your feet, the feeling of water dripping down your faces and fogging your glasses, the damp chill as your clothes soak in the moisture. No recording carries with it the green all around you, the quiet elk browsing in the forest to your side, the slow falling leaves knocked from branches by hard raindrops. But still, still a recording can convey some of the subtleties of the immediate surroundings, some of the details that go into making one tree sing like another does not.

Vine Maples are a common sight throughout the coastal forests of the Pacific Northwest. A shrubby tree that occasionally grows to significant size when left un-disturbed, it's often laden with thick matts of moss that absorb just as much rain as they do sound. The broad leaves of the maple catch raindrops with a loud splat, splashing off to moisten everything nearby. The drops that make it through the canopy hit ferns and other broadleaf understory plants, creating a "floor" of sound that acts as a counterpoint to the diffuse conifer spray up above. In calmer, less intense rainfall you can almost hear individual drops as they drip-drip-drip down from the sky and through the blankets of moss that continue to "rain" long after actual water has stopped falling from the sky.

ASTHMATIC HARP is the musical moniker of Oxford based songwriter and composer Hannah Fredsgaard-Jones. Through the ethereal autoharp, gentle guitar strumming, hushed and tumbling melodies, Asthmatic Harp is synonymous with a sound that manages to be comforting, folksy, eerie, and personal, all at once. 
Born in Denmark before moving to the UK, Hannah began performing on the London music scene with her debut EP in 2015. In 2018 she was handpicked to the prestigious Roundhouse Resident Artist Program. Asthmatic Harp has featured on Danish National Radio and the BBC (6 Music and Radio 3). She has supported Sam Palladio in the Roundhouse and Mary Lattimore during her recent European tour and played gigs across Europe and America, including a gig at the inaugural Kite Festival 2022. Her latest EP ‘Things We Learned To Live With’ was lauded as “a delightfully playful slice of alt-folk” receiving acclaim from blogs ‘For The Rabbits’, ‘Listen With Monger’ and ‘Bristol in Stereo’ and culminated in 21 virtual concerts, including a sold-out concert for Low-Fi Denmark, appearances at The Takeover Fest and at Southside Fringe.
