My new song ‘Jarvis Valley’, a melancholic folk pop song loosely based on the works of Dylan Thomas. I recorded this at home and all composition, instrumentation, recording and mixing were done entirely by myself with an acoustic guitar, an 80s synth and a looped beat track. The song features fingerstyle guitar, layered vocals and crescendos into a lighter, more dream-like sound at the final chorus. ‘Jarvis Valley’ is a fantasy place Thomas mentions in a lot of his work. He usually presents it as the place we go after death. I like to think such a place exists. I also reference some of the places I have lived myself and the song represents some of the memories that I have there. I often feel that childhood memories have a dreamy paradisal afterlife quality about them. Jarvis Valley, for me, represents both childhood and death and the happiness that comes with both. I hope you enjoy! 😊

This is another “folk" approach to a cover song, in this case an all-time Motown favorite originally popularized by a 1968 collaboration of the Supremes and the Temptations (written by Gamble & Huff and Jerry Ross). Hard to match the vocal excellence of those two awesome groups but I just put a spin on it to channel the awesome emotive nature of the song. Got a little out of my comfort zone but for a base file done on my iPhone and with some grand help from my partner in music, Nat Daniels (piano & bass & production), I like the outcome.

I've created a Synth version of this Chopin classical waltz, synthesizer arps, distorted phased viola and a solo muted soft piano create an eerie sequence …. This track works beautifully as a calming background or a beguiling vision of a hi-tech future.

After our first collaboration - https://soundcloud.com/markjbennett/set-me-down-that-road-rplanesmjbennett - Rodolfo offered me a challenge in the form of a decades old song (in a folk/pop style, complete with tape hiss) that he was updating with a platform that is closer to R&B and my task was to come up with a new lyric. This original break-up song had an air of a happy ending to it, though initially I chose to write something less optimistic… however it became clear that with the new arrangement my words had to match the original mood. The added bonus to this is that I now have another break-up song lyric available for the future.
Singing a song that had already existed in another form meant that I had to find a very personal interpretation in order to make it truly mine. A huge thanks to Rodolfo for sharing his inspiring music with me.
